Graharn <strong>an</strong>d Bennet (1998:114) add to <strong>the</strong> above by saying that intelligence is <strong>the</strong> capacity to<br />

make effective use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> intellect which is <strong>the</strong> sum total <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mental functions <strong>of</strong> underst<strong>an</strong>ding,<br />

thinking, learning, observing, problem-solving <strong>an</strong>d perceptual relationships.<br />

Dubrin (1997:21) agrees when he states that intelligence is <strong>the</strong> capacity to acquire <strong>an</strong>d apply<br />

knowledge, including solving problems. Nadler, et at. (1999:241) add that intelligence has to do<br />

with aperson's accumulated knowledge.<br />

. It is import<strong>an</strong>t that <strong>the</strong> GEL is <strong>an</strong> intelligent person. It is expected <strong>of</strong> him to adapt to new situations<br />

easily, to learn new skills quickly, solve problems timeously <strong>an</strong>d apply his accumulated knowledge<br />

in <strong>the</strong> co-operative education environment<br />

2.3.23 Mature<br />

Maturity me<strong>an</strong>s to be relatively mentally adv<strong>an</strong>ced. Being mature me<strong>an</strong>s that a person has<br />

developed into <strong>an</strong> adult <strong>an</strong>d c<strong>an</strong> approach life in <strong>an</strong> objective <strong>an</strong>d realistic way. The GEL must be<br />

able to act in a mature <strong>an</strong>d responsible way. The students are dependent on <strong>the</strong> GEL for guid<strong>an</strong>ce<br />

<strong>an</strong>d counselling. He will only be able to give such guid<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d counselling if he is a mature adult<br />

with awell developed sense <strong>of</strong> responsibility.<br />

2.3.24 Optimistic<br />

Optimism c<strong>an</strong> be defined as expecting <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> all situations <strong>an</strong>d people.<br />

The GEL must be optimistic abou1 <strong>the</strong> co-operative education process because he will have to<br />

promote this process to students, student employers <strong>an</strong>d faculty members. He must have <strong>an</strong><br />

absolute belief that <strong>the</strong> process is <strong>of</strong> value to <strong>the</strong> student <strong>the</strong> employer <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> academic<br />

institution.<br />
