2.3.18 Friendly<br />

The GEL should be sociable <strong>an</strong>d interact with students <strong>an</strong>d employers in a kind <strong>an</strong>d congenial<br />

m<strong>an</strong>ner.<br />

A friendly GEL will be able to get better co-operation from <strong>the</strong> students as well as <strong>the</strong> student<br />

employers. People are always more willing to work with <strong>an</strong>d help afriendly <strong>an</strong>d congenial person.<br />

2.3.19 Helpful<br />

Being helpful c<strong>an</strong> be defined as sharing <strong>the</strong> work, cost or burden <strong>of</strong> something. The GEL should<br />

always be willing to help students <strong>an</strong>d employers with <strong>the</strong>ir problems. He should respond positively<br />

to arequest for help from faculty members, colleagues, students <strong>an</strong>d employers.<br />

Counselling is a very import<strong>an</strong>t part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GEL's duties. By taking <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> counselor, <strong>the</strong> GEL<br />

c<strong>an</strong> help students in m<strong>an</strong>y ways. According to Graharn <strong>an</strong>d Bennet {1998:236}, counselling is <strong>the</strong><br />

process <strong>of</strong> helping people recognise <strong>the</strong>ir feelings about problems, define those problems<br />

accurately, find solutions, or learn to 6ve with a situation. Clack (1991:65) also concludes that<br />

counselling is about helping people underst<strong>an</strong>d more clearly how <strong>the</strong>y are m<strong>an</strong>aging a situation,<br />

how <strong>the</strong>y make things easy or difficult for <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>an</strong>d how <strong>the</strong>y restrict <strong>the</strong>ir ability to solve<br />

problems.<br />

The GEL must also be able to help <strong>the</strong> students make decisions about <strong>the</strong>ir careers <strong>an</strong>d futures.<br />

He must be able to help <strong>the</strong>m find placement positions that will give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />

experience according to <strong>the</strong>ir career choice. The CEl must also be helpful if <strong>the</strong> student<br />

experiences <strong>an</strong>y lflfficulties during his experiential learning period.<br />

The student employers will also <strong>of</strong>ten need assist<strong>an</strong>ce form <strong>the</strong> GEL. He must help <strong>the</strong> student<br />

employers with <strong>an</strong>y facet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> co-operative education process that may be problematic for <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
