2.2.4 Role <strong>an</strong>d Responsibility Relative to Administration<br />

The CEl also has a very big part to play when it comes to administrative duties. Administrative<br />

skills refer to knowledge about <strong>the</strong> org<strong>an</strong>isation <strong>an</strong>d how it works - <strong>the</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ning, org<strong>an</strong>ising <strong>an</strong>d<br />

controlling functions <strong>of</strong> supervision (Rue &Byars, 1993:8).<br />

Administrative duties take up a lot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CEl's time <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>refore it is very import<strong>an</strong>t that <strong>the</strong> CEl<br />

should have awell developed administrative support system in place.<br />

According to Boum (2000:35), considerable time, administrative input <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong> efficient<br />

administrative system are essential to oversee <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>age <strong>the</strong> production process for <strong>the</strong> course<br />

materials used in <strong>the</strong> co-operative education process.<br />

Kok (2000:57) adds to <strong>the</strong> above by expressing that it is essential for co-ordinators <strong>an</strong>d students<br />

engaged in <strong>the</strong> co-operative education programme to have <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> a sound administrative<br />

support structure.<br />

A well developed administrative support system is very import<strong>an</strong>t because <strong>the</strong> CEl should<br />

establish <strong>an</strong>d maintain student records for placement <strong>an</strong>d counselling purposes. He must also<br />

develop <strong>an</strong>d maintain a database <strong>of</strong> student <strong>an</strong>d employer information.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>the</strong> CEl is responsible for routine correspondence with students, employers <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

academic institution. He must also prepare reports relating to <strong>the</strong> co-operative education process<br />

<strong>an</strong>d conduct surveys about <strong>the</strong> co-operative education programme.<br />

In m<strong>an</strong>y cases <strong>the</strong> ca has administrative support personnel to help him. These individuals must<br />

be supervised <strong>an</strong>d trained to maintain <strong>the</strong> administrative support system.<br />
