1.6.17 Vocational Education<br />

Vocational education, according to Korowski (1991 :92), indicates <strong>the</strong> educational process aimed at<br />

<strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> vocational skills with a view to occupational competence/economic<br />

independence.<br />

1.7 SUMMARY<br />

It seems that <strong>the</strong> role <strong>an</strong>d responsibilities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CEl are quite diverse <strong>an</strong>d complex. They may also<br />

differ from academic institution to academic institution.<br />

The CEl plays <strong>an</strong> integral role in <strong>the</strong> education process <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students involved in <strong>the</strong> co-operative<br />

education programme. Therefore it is import<strong>an</strong>t to research methods to improve <strong>the</strong> functioning <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> CEl in <strong>the</strong> tertiary education sector.<br />

An up-to-date pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> roles <strong>an</strong>d responsibilities; personality traits; abilities <strong>an</strong>d <strong>characteristics</strong>;<br />

qualifications <strong>an</strong>d experience required for <strong>an</strong> ideal CEl will be able to set certain guidelines with<br />

regard to <strong>the</strong> recruitment remuneration, assessment <strong>an</strong>d training <strong>of</strong> CEls in South Africa.<br />

The different roles <strong>an</strong>d responsibilities; personality traits; <strong>characteristics</strong> <strong>an</strong>d abilities; level <strong>of</strong><br />

qualifications <strong>an</strong>d types <strong>of</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> aCEl will be discussed in detail in <strong>the</strong> following chapter.<br />
