1.6.11 Mentor<br />

The mentor is <strong>the</strong> person, normally employed within <strong>the</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>y where a student will do<br />

experientialleaming. The mentor is <strong>the</strong> person responsible, on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> specific comp<strong>an</strong>y, to<br />

pl<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d operationalise <strong>the</strong> experientialleaming programme as agreed to with <strong>the</strong> co-ordinator.<br />

1.6.12 Placement<br />

students are 'placed" at comp<strong>an</strong>ies to do <strong>the</strong>ir experientialleamingcomponenl This 'placement"<br />

takes on various forms, e.g. withlwithout remuneration, withlwithout st<strong>an</strong>dard employment<br />

procedures, etc.( Gotlieb, 1986:47).<br />

1.6.13 Recruitment<br />

Gerber, et al. (1998:90) explain that recruitment aims at encouraging relev<strong>an</strong>tly skilled <strong>an</strong>d<br />

qualified applic<strong>an</strong>ts to apply for a specific position according to <strong>the</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>y's needs. Recruitment<br />

c<strong>an</strong> be defined as <strong>the</strong> actions acomp<strong>an</strong>y takes to ensure that <strong>the</strong> ideal person applies for avac<strong>an</strong>t<br />

position within <strong>the</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>y.<br />

Remuneration is <strong>the</strong> payment made or reward given to a <strong>job</strong> incumbent for services rendered or<br />

work completed.<br />

Skill pertains to specific expertise, competency, etc., that are required for <strong>the</strong> perform<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> a<br />

defined occupational task; particular skills are associated with certain fields, enterprises <strong>an</strong>d<br />

subject matter; as a1lleaming involves some skill or <strong>an</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r, skills may be acquired <strong>an</strong>d developed<br />

through training; a set <strong>of</strong> acquired skills makes up a technique used in <strong>the</strong> perform<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> a<br />

defined task (Petersen & Nelson, 1986:18).<br />
