1.6 CLARIFICATION OF BASIC TERMS AND CONCEPTS<br />

1.6.1 Assessment<br />

To assess me<strong>an</strong>s to evaluate. For <strong>the</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> this study, assessment refers to <strong>the</strong> evaluation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> employee's worth to a comp<strong>an</strong>y <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> employee's orstudenfs <strong>job</strong><br />

perform<strong>an</strong>ce according to criteria setout by <strong>the</strong> <strong>job</strong> description.<br />

1.6.2 Career Education.<br />

. The specific model <strong>of</strong> education aimed at <strong>the</strong> discovery <strong>of</strong> knowledge, tr<strong>an</strong>sferring skills, inculcating<br />

values <strong>an</strong>d attitudes (with a utilitari<strong>an</strong> value in <strong>the</strong> work environment) so as to enable <strong>the</strong> student to<br />

take up a career; not as specific as vocational education but has a broader career emphasis<br />

(Stoelinga, 1990:42).<br />

1.6.3 Co-operative Education<br />

Co-operative education is a programme (method) <strong>of</strong> vocational education for persons who, through<br />

written co-operative agreements between school <strong>an</strong>d employers, receive instruction by alternation<br />

<strong>of</strong> study at school with a placement in <strong>an</strong>y occupational field. However, <strong>the</strong>se two experiences<br />

must be pl<strong>an</strong>ned <strong>an</strong>d supervised by <strong>the</strong> school <strong>an</strong>d employers so that each contributes to <strong>the</strong><br />

student's education <strong>an</strong>d his or her employability (South Carolina Department <strong>of</strong> Education, 1981).<br />

Porter (1981:1) defines co-operative education as a unique educational process, designed to<br />

promote individual career development <strong>an</strong>d self awareness by me<strong>an</strong>s <strong>of</strong> integrating classroom<br />

<strong>the</strong>ory with pl<strong>an</strong>ned <strong>an</strong>d supervised practical experience in vocational, educational or cultural<br />

activities outside <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> formal classroom environment<br />

Davies <strong>an</strong>d Hase (1994:33) describe a model for co-operative education that inVOlves joint<br />

ownership <strong>of</strong> programmes between universities <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> workplace. Thus, it is taken to include<br />

provision <strong>of</strong> student placements in <strong>the</strong> workplace for practical experience; having people from<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional bodies or <strong>the</strong> workplace on course advisory committees; joint appointments;<br />

contracting to provide or jointly develop educational experiences; <strong>an</strong>d partnership arr<strong>an</strong>gements<br />
