‘n Mens kan dit byna nie glo nie, maar die jaar 2012
is iets van die verlede en sal ons binne die volgende
paar weke in elke winkelsentrum Kersliedere begin
hoor.
Die Algemene Jaarvergadering wat op 29 September
2012 plaasgevind het, is ook alreeds iets van die
verlede en is die Raadslede al almal volstoom besig
met hulle beplanning vir hulle nuwe portefeuljes. Ons
wens hulle almal baie sterkte toe vir hulle ampstermyn.
Ons is almal in die Brahman besigheid en die welslae
wat die kommersiële teler met ons genetika behaal, is
dit wat ons ras dra en altyd hom gevraagd sal maak!
As stoettelers moet ons prakties wees met ons
teelprogramme, en ons moet nooit uit die oog verloor
dat ons is in ‘n langtermyn besigheid en daar nie
korttermyn oplossings is nie.
Ons moet ons telers oplei, en moet nooit vergeet dat ons
by elke teler iets kan leer nie. As Opleidingskomitee
het ons die verantwoordelikheid om elke teler te
bemagtig om ‘n beter teler te wees. ‘n Topstoetteler
soek altyd ‘n bul, en daarom is dit dus belangrik om
meer tyd aan ons eie teelprogramme te spandeer.
Kom ons maak ‘n punt daarvan om die positiewe in
ons medetelers en hulle diere raak te sien. Ek glo
onwrikbaar in die gebruik van jong stoetbulle. As ‘n
bul in 20 bulkalwers hom nie uitpresteer nie, het u hom
nie nodig nie! Seleksie in u kudde kan nooit te streng
wees nie. Waak daarteen dat u nie u swak diere aan
u mede-stoettelers verkoop nie.
Wat soek die mark? Die kommersiële teler soek ‘n
vroegryp korter-op-die-been bul. Hulle moet breed,
lank en diep wees. Sulke bulle het ‘n breë borsvloer
en agterkwart met konstitusie. Hierdie bulle se
kalwers is uiters gesog in die voerkrale. As koeilyn
bly ons ras uiters gesog. Geen ander ras het die
kruiskrag (heterose) “Hybrid Vigour” en gehardheid
van ons ras nie. Ons kompeteer met geen ras nie,
ons komplimenteer slegs alle rasse. Daarom is daar
16 rasse in die wêreld wat ‘n Brahman gebruik om vir
hulle beter rasse te maak.
Wêreldkongres
Uiteindelik het die Wêreldkongres ‘n werklikheid

nearly something of the past and very soon Christmas
Carols will be heard in all shopping centres.
The annual General Meeting held on 29 September
2012 has also already passed and Councillors are
all full steam engaged in the planning of their new
portfolios. We wish them all the best for their terms of
office.
We are all in the Brahman business and the success
the commercial breeder attains with our genetics
is what sustains the breed and will always keep it in
demand!
As stud breeders, we must remain practical in our
breeding programmes and never lose sight of the fact
that we are in a long-term enterprise where there are
no short-term solutions.
We must train our breeders and never forget that
we can also learn something from each breeder.
As training committee we have the responsibility to
empower every breeder to become a better breeder.
A top stud breeder is always looking for a bull and
therefore it is important to spend more time on our own
breeding programme. Let’s make a point of identifying
positive aspects in our fellow breeders and their
animals. I firmly believe in the use of young stud bulls.
If a bull has not been outperformed by any of his 20
bull calves, you do not need him! Selection in your
herd can never be too strict. Guard against selling
your poor animals to fellow breeders.
What does the market want? The commercial breeder
looks for an early maturing, more short legged animal.
They must be long bodied, broad and deep. Such
bulls have a broad chest floor and hindquarters with
constitution. The calves of these bulls are dearly
sought after in feedlots. As maternal parent line our
breed remains very sought after. No other breed has
the hybrid vigour and hardiness of our cattle. We do not
compete with any other breed; we merely complement
them all. Small wonder that 16 breeds in the world use
a Brahman to produce better breeds.
World Congress
The World Congress has finally become a reality and we

geword en is ons hard besig met die beplanning
daarvan. Die beplanning is om die kongres van
September te skuif na 6 tot 11 April 2014, in die Afri-
Dome te Parys. Hierdie gedagte word tans wyd
aanvaar en geniet die steun van ons lede. Soos u
almal weet, is Suid-Afrika op sy mooiste in April. Al
die beeste is vet en die plase is mooi. Ons wynlande
en Kruger Park is ook op hulle mooiste. Gedurende
die tyd sal ons land perfek wees vir toere voor en na
die kongres. Ons beplan tans om as deel van die
Wêreldkongres Afrika te inkorporeer, om sodoende
ons ras oor die hele Afrika kontinent te promoveer. So
‘n bemarkingsaksie sal verseker tot al ons telers se
voordeel wees.
Om die kongres ‘n sukses te maak, het ons al 450 lede
se ondersteuning nodig.

to present the congress at the Afri-Dome, Parys, from
6 to 11 April 2014, instead of during September, as
originally planned. This suggestion is widely accepted
and enjoys the support of our members. As you all
know, South Africa’s scenic beauty is at a peak in April.
All the animals are fat and the farms look lovely. Our
winelands and Kruger Park are also at their loveliest
best. At this time of year our country will be perfect
for pre– and postcongress tours. We are currently
planning to incorporate the rest of Africa as part of the
congress and by so doing promote our breed over the
whole African continent. Such a marketing action will
ensure advantage to all our breeders.

Vraag:
Waar is die beste plek om binnespierse inspuitings in beeste toe te dien?
Antwoord: Alle diere wat na ‘n voerkraal gaan, of wat geslag word vir vleisdoeleindes, moet slegs binnespiers
in die nek en op geen ander plek nie ingespuit word. Baie middels, veral sekere van die tetrasikliene, veroorsaak
swelling en later letsels in die spier. Die spiere van die nek is van die goedkoper vleis en as daar letsels voorkom,
word dit uitgesny tydens vleisinspeksie en berokken dit minder skade as wanneer die letsels in die duurder
spiere van die agterkwart voorkom.

May we have
a green Christmas!
The words of the old time favourite, I’m dreaming of
a white Christmas, very often ring in my heart. I know
it is romantic, but in my country, South Africa, and in
many other countries it doesn’t snow in December.
For many farmers it can already be a time of drought
with hardly any green feed.
Since earliest times Christians have been using the
Christmas tree with its decorations as symbols of
certain truths relating to Jesus Christ. Originally the
evergreen pine had been used as a Christmas tree.
These trees, that retain their leaves in winter, portray
life. So every time that I look at the green Christmas
tree, I know: Jesus is the Incorruptible that came to
give us life everlasting. He wants to let new life sprout
out from us every day.
Say ‘green’, and almost all religious and spiritual
groups cock their ears. In Islam the colour green is
used to describe the celestial state of the inhabitants
of Paradise. Muhammad, Islam’s prophet, wears a
green robe. Many Islam believers wear green wrist
bands as symbol of new life given by the godhead. In
Hinduism the colour of the fourth heart chakra is green.
The Buddhists hold green, being the central colour of
the visible spectrum, as symbolical of balance.
Say ‘green’, and also the Christians smile. In Ireland
and Scotland the colour green represents the Catholic
tradition. In the Eastern Catholic church Pentecost
is associated with green, due to new life and growth
granted by the Holy Spirit. In the wake of antique
religions, green is regarded by Christians as typical
of new life, growth in the believer’s life, and victory
over death. This idea, of course, has its source in the
cyclical rhythm of nature.
Environment psychology add relaxation, quietness,
stability and the relief of anxiety and depression to all
the favourable characteristics of green. God made
colours and gave them to us to use in a therapeutic
and spiritual way to enrich our everyday lives. Even
though green is not everyone’s cup of tea, God
nevertheless wishes us to drink in some of his green.
Don’t misunderstand me: You needn’t physically wear
green clothes and decorations, but allow this colour
wavelength of 520-570 nanometer to light up your
spiritual eyes a bit and shine through your grey brain
and revive you from your arid dryness and barrenness.
The trails of green run deep in God’s Word: ‘Blessed
is the man … (whose) delight is in the law of the
Lord … He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers
of water, … his leaf also shall not wither’ (Psalm 1:1-
3). And Proverbs 11:28 warns against a capitalistic
and materialistic way of life: ‘Those who trust in their
riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green
leaf ’(New International Version). Now is perhaps more

necessary than ever to protest in the words of Evan
Sayet against the wrong ‘green’ that so easily addicts
people: ‘Barack Obama has raised tons of money.
That is what he means by being green.’ How often do
we not yearn to pause a little, break away from the dull
rate race of generating money and paying accounts
and buying food and maintaining motor cars, and
again generating money to pay accounts and buy
food and … And then! God that caringly soothes,
pacifies, and gives rest: ‘He maketh me to lie down in
green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters
…’ (Psalm 23:2).
Green also some times has negative connotations:
To be a greenhorn – inexperienced. The colour of
jealousy as expressed by Iago towards Othello in
one of Shakespeare’s works: ‘O, beware, my lord,
of jealousy; It is the green-ey’d monster, which doth
mock the meat it feeds on.’ Or perhaps you may
be ‘green about the gills’ – feel nauseous and sick.
Revenge: ‘A man that studieth revenge keeps his own
wounds green’ – Francis Bacon. Or discontent with
your circumstances and constantly hankering after the
‘green grass on the other side of the fence.’
But, green! Finally overwhelmingly positive – to such
an extent that God describes his heaven in colourful
(all Christmas colours!) metaphors, and green is not
absent. Revelation 21 sketches the New Jerusalem of
God amongst others by means of a wide variety of
colourful gems, among which is also the emerald in
translucent light green. In Revelations 4:2 and 3 John
has a vision of God’s throne: ‘and, behold a throne
was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne … and
there was a rainbow round about the throne in sight
like unto an emerald.’ A red, orange, yellow, green,
blue, indigo, violet rainbow that since Noah’s time has
been pointing to God’s grace and forgiveness towards
people.
But then, green! The rainbow is veiled in a dominating
green colour! God’s heaven is the ultimate place
of rest, not passive idleness, but free from sin and
suffering and everything that is negative. The final and
perfect ‘green pastures’ have dawned. By the birth
of Jesus Christ on Christmas day God declares that
something from this heaven can already now realise
on earth. Now already the heavenly verdant tinged
rainbow of God can shine into our lives with new life,
with a fresh and refreshing awakening from deathlike
situations, through – like the Chinese believe – Green:
The virtue of beauty. Enrich your Christmas this year
with lots of green, but also with ample and abundant
other colours. May God’s biggest Christmas gift to us,
his Son Jesus Christ, shine in and through us with a
variety of colourful grace and love.

Scrotal size &
days to calving EBVs

BREEDPLAN currently produces two EBVs
that specifically relate to herd reproduction
and fertility, being Scrotal Size and Days to
Calving.
While many producers manage reproductive
performance using different management strategies,
in particular the culling of females that fail to get in
calf, research has shown that fertility is influenced
considerably by the genetics of the breeding herd.
Consequently, Scrotal Size and Days to Calving EBVs
provide a useful tool that breeders in both northern and
southern Australia can use to improve the genetics of
their herd for fertility, in association with their routine
management and culling strategies.
Scrotal Size EBVs are estimates of the genetic
differences between animals in scrotal circumference
at 400 days of age.
In addition to providing an insight into a bull’s ability to
cover a normal mating load, the scrotal circumference
of a bull provides an important indication of his genetic
merit for several important fertility traits. Increased
scrotal circumference is associated with earlier age at
puberty, increased semen production and improved
semen quality. Increased scrotal circumference also
has a favourable relationship with female fertility, both in
terms of earlier age at puberty, earlier return to oestrous
and shorter days to calving.
Breeders interested in Scrotal Size EBVs need to
record scrotal circumference measurements on their
bulls. Scrotal measurements should be recorded in
centimetres by pulling the testes firmly down into the
lower part of the scrotum and placing a measuring
tape around the widest point. Scrotal circumference
measurements can be taken by anyone. They do not
need to be taken by an accredited technician. Scrotal
measurements should be recorded when bulls are
between 300 – 700 days of age (ie. 10 – 23 months),
however the recommended time is when bulls are
reaching puberty. In most circumstances, this will mean
recording scrotal measurements in association with the
400 day weights for the bulls.

A variety of scrotal circumference measuring devices
are commercially available from agricultural supply
stores or organisations such as the Australian Cattle
Veterinarians. At the time of writing, the Australian
Limousin Breeders Society were also offering a

measuring tape for sale. Metal scrotal
measuring tapes are more reliable than
cloth tapes as they are not prone to

Days to Calving EBVs are estimates of
genetic differences between animals in
time from the start of the joining period
(ie. when the female is introduced to a
bull) until subsequent calving.
The Days to Calving EBV identifies sires
whose daughters calve earlier in the
season compared to those that calve
later, or do not calve at all. Variation
in days to calving is mainly due to
differences in the time taken for females
to conceive after the commencement of
the joining period. Females with shorter
Days to Calving EBVs also tend to be those that show
early puberty as heifers and earlier return to oestrous
after calving.
Breeders interested in the Days to Calving EBV need
to record all ‘events’ associated with the joining of their
females from the start of the mating period in each
breeding season through to when the subsequent
calves are born. Presently, only information from natural
joining programs is included in the calculation of Days
to Calving EBVs. This includes those females that have
only been joined naturally within a breeding season
and have not previously been included in artificial
insemination/embryo transfer programs or artificially
induced to cycle prior to joining with the bull outside of
such programs.
Broadly, the information to be collected for Days to
Calving EBVs should include:
a) Joining details of all females naturally mated within
the herd. This includes details of the bull/s the female
was joined to and bull in and out date/s.
“Days to Calving EBVs provide seedstock producers with a tool to improve
the fertility genetics of their animals, in association with their routine culling
and management strategies
b) Details of all calves (dead or alive) that are born as a
result of these joinings.
c) Details of all females disposed of from the herd,
particularly those present at joining that were no
longer within the herd by the time of the subsequent
calving. A set of approximately 20 disposal codes
are available from BREEDPLAN.
Importantly, while the details of all calves born should
be recorded with your Breed Society, the joining and
female disposal information needs to be submitted
directly to the BREEDPLAN office. Any joining and
female disposal information submitted to your Breed
Society will not be included into the calculation of Days
to Calving EBVs.

Linde du Plessis van die Brandwaterboerdery
by Fouriesburg, waar die
OVK-jongboeredag in samewerking met
Vrystaat Landbou (VL) aangebied is, pluk
vandag de vrugte van sy suksesgeheim.
Hy en sy seuns Chris en Koos teel met brahmane,
is droëland-saaiboere wat mielies, koring en
droëbone plant en hulle boer ook met merinoskape.
‘n Beskeie Du Plessis, wat glo stoetteling is in sy
bloed en dat prestasie hom aanspoor, het op die
OVK-jongboeredag ‘n paar goeie wenke oor sy
brahman- en droughtmaster-kruisteelprogram met
die jonger boere gedeel.
Die Du Plessis-boerdery het aanvanklik afrikanerbeeste
met sussex-bulle geteel, maar het toe
stelselmatig na brahmane met simmentalers
oorgeskakel en nou word hoofsaaklik met
brahmane en geharde Australiese drought-masters
gekruisteel.
Hy sê sy prestasie is sy motivering en dit is vir hom
bevredigend wanneer sy diere, soos Moremi, ‘n
pragtige manso-brahmanbul, presteer.
Stoettelery is in Linde du Plessis van die
Brandwater-boerdery by Fouriesburg se
bloed. Hy het op die OVK-Jongboeredag
wat op sy plaas aangebied is ‘n paar geheime
oor sy kruisteelprogram met brahman
en drougtmasters gedeel
Die vier jaar oue bul is vanjaar as die Suid-Afrikaanse
kampioenbul op Vryburg se landbouskou
aangewys. Hy het hier die goue beker ontvang en
was ook die grootkampioenbul op die Royal-skou
in Pietermaritzburg.
Du Plessis vertel hy het besluit om met brahmane
te teel, omdat dit so ‘n wyd aangepaste ras is
wat oral bemark kan word. “Jy moet boer met dit
waarvoor jy lief is.” Hy gebruik altyd suiwer bulle
op kruiskoeie en het aan die jong boere verduidelik
vroulike diere moet goeie teelmateriaal wees.
“Moenie bang wees om ou koeie te koop nie, dit is
‘n goeie wenk wat julle kan saamneem.”
Goeie bulle verseker ook ‘n goeie nageslag.
Hy het verder verduidelik bestaande en
voornemende beestelers moet baie streng keuring
vir vleis toepas.
Al die goeie eienskappe waaroor ‘n bees moet
beskik, soos temperament en aanpasbaarheid,
moet deurgaans in ag geneem word.
Die proses moet ook koste-doeltreffend gedoen

word en boere moet nie oorbestee nie.
Du Plessis glo met nuwe tegnologie
wag beslis ‘n blink toekoms op die
landboubedryf.
Die bestaande “goeie geleenthede”
moet net gebruik word.
“Die invloed wat ons as boere in
gemeenskappe het, is van so ‘n aard
dat daar beslis ‘n toekoms vir landbou
is. Menslike foute moet tot die minimum
beperk word.
Ek is van kleintyd af ‘n boer en ek sal
maar so doodgaan.”
HoefSLaG feeS 2012:
Saterdag 13 Oktober
is daar tydens die
jaarlikse Hoefslag fees ‘n
geleentheid geskep om
twee besonderse pioniers in die
Brahman bedryf te vereer en dankie
te sê vir hulle grootse bydrae tot die
totstandkoming en uitbreiding van
die Brahman bedryf in Suid-Afrika.
Die dag was gekenmerk deur ‘n
program van perde, musiek, danse
en ook ‘n perdeveiling. Die opbrengs
van die dag word dan geskenk aan
minderbevoorregte mense.
Dit was die eerste keer dat die
Brahman ras ‘n geleentheid kry om
ook ‘n paar beeste uit te stal.
Beesparade
Linde du Plessis is baie trots op Moremi, sy prag-manso-brahmanbul wat
vanjaar op verskeie diereskoue oor die land heen gepresteer het.

Mnr Manie Maritz en sy gade
Beatrice (pionier teler van Brahman
beeste in die Thabazimbi bosveld,
vanaf 1965) was ook daar. Mnr
Joagim en Adele Crantz (kleinseun
van Mnr Jurgen Crantz, eerste invoer
na Suidelike Afrika, 1954) is op die
feestelike dag onthaal en bedank
vir hul bydrae tot die uitbou van die
Brahman ras in Suid-Afrika.
Die Hoefslag fees, wat eintlik ‘n
perdevertoning geleentheid is, is
op die plaas van Mnr Piet Botha
gehou. Dit word jaarliks goed
ondersteun, bykans 1200 mense
was teenwoordig.
Mnr Piet Botha het ‘n volledige
Mnr en Mev Crantz, Mnr Manie
Maritz en Mnr Piet Botha tydens die
toekenningsgeleentheid
huldeblyk gedoen oor die impak
wat Mnr Manie Maritz en Mnr Jurgen
Crantz in die Brahman Beesbedryf
asook op ander terreine van hul
lewenspad gehad het.
Mnr Stephan Coetzee (Coetzrand),
Mnr Henry en Jaques Britz (HCB) en
Mnr Hendrik en Wilma van Zyl (HVZ)
het beeste uitgestal.
Tydens die beesparade is ‘n kort
oorsig gegee oor die herkoms van
die Brahman ras, sy ontwikkeling
en impak in die Suid-Afrika rooivleis
bedryf
Verskeie ander Brahmantelers het
ook kom kuier en die dag geniet.
