Hendrik
Ras
Ek is Hendrik Ras, gebore in die Brits-distrik in 1951. My vader was ‘n boer in murg
In my hart het ek egter altyd boer gebly.
boer.
vinnig.
Ek luister na alle raad, maar sif so goed moontlik in my eie logiese proses. Vandag het ek
pragtige veld Herefords in ‘n buitengewoon goeie kondisie, aangesien ons in ons distrik
62
Hereford2013
Sy liefde vir sy Herefords word duidelik
gewys deur die geduld waarmee hy sy
beeste hanteer en die goedige geterg
dat ‘n vriend se plaas heelwat beter
daar sal uitsien as daar Herefords loop....
kinders. Die oudste dogter, Liezel, wat
op die familieplaas, Reinfeld, net buite
Bethlehem woon, staan hom by in die
boerdery. Geseën met vyf kleinseuns,
sal die Reinfeld stoet hopelik nog lank
kan voortbestaan.

tydens 2012 AJV
In Memoriam
DIRK LOUW
Wyle oom Dirk Louw is te
Koffiefontein in die Vrystaat op
09.06.1919 gebore.
Tydens die oorlogsjare het hy by
’n Joodse familie in Bloemfontein
gewerk.
bankrekening in Bloemfontein.
JAMES AVISON MAPHAM
Obituary James Avison Mapham
(born 10 July 1923 died 28 February
2012)
“Uncle Jim” as he was known to
many Hereford Breeders was born
in Dordrecht and schooled at Queens College in
Queenstown. After leaving school he joined the army
in 1941 trained at Premier Mine near Cullinan and
was assigned to the armoured car division known as
the 6th Brigade in World War 2. He returned home in
November 1945 to the farm Greenvale in Dordrecht
where he farmed with his father. In 1948 he married
Jean and they had two sons and a daughter.
After his father died in 1953 the horned Hereford stud
was sold and Jim started the Penderry Poll Hereford
Stud with only a few cows. As breeder Uncle Jim went
from strength to strength and imported various herd
sires from the UK, the most well-known being Crickley
Barrow Destiny. It was always a highlight to visit at
Greenvale as a young breeder and one always learnt
something about cattle or farming. Jim was one of the
first breeders to embrace performance testing and
also played an important role in introducing AI to the
Hereford breed during his term on Council.
Moorcroft aangekoop.
Engeland ingevoer.
terwyl hy in S.A. op die telefoon in kontak was. Hierna
Voorwaar ’n dankbetuiging soos min.
Jim served on the Hereford Council from 1965 after
he had been elected to the Poll Breeders Committee
in 1964. From 1973 to 1975 he served as president of
the Hereford Breeders Society of Southern Africa. He
was appointed Hereford representative to Studbook
in 1965 and elected to the Studbook council in 1967,
became treasurer of SA Studbook in 1969 and served
as vice-president from 1973 to 1976. Jim was also a
well respected senior judge of Hereford cattle and
officiated at many shows and judges courses in his
time. He was also invited to judge Herefords in the UK
and judged both Herefords and the interbreed classes
at the Bulawayo Show. Jim was a mentor to many
new Hereford Breeders and his opinion was highly
respected and sought after. Jim was an honorary life
President of the SA Hereford Society at the time of his
passing
As a farmer Jim was years ahead of his time with
regards to both veld management and conservation
and he approached his breeding and farming in an
ecologically sound manner.
Jim and Jean retired from farming in 2000 and
moved to Pretoria to be closer to family in the same
year.
Thank you for this opportunity to report back on the activities of the KZN Hereford Club for
2012.
1 MEMBERSHIP
The membership of the KZN Hereford Club have remained static during the past year. The
total membership is 24 members at last count of which we have about 40% attending
meetings of the Club.
2 CLUB ACTIVITIES
2.1 Family Weekend
We once again had a most enjoyable Family Weekend at St. Bernards’ Peak from the 6th –
8th September 2012. The weekend was attended by 5 families. The group was unanimous
in their decision to carry on with this tradition. Once again blessed with perfect weather it
was an ideal opportunity to socialize and the hike to the Bushman paintings was one of the
highlights of the weekend, while the fishermen also had their own challenges!
We would once again like to thank Anne Louwrens for organizing and liaising the
arrangements to make this weekend the success it was and are looking forward to next
year where I hope that we will be joined by more of our members.
Congratulations to Ewald Köhne for his election as Chairman of the Cattle Committee of
2.3 Carcass Competition
The Club did not enter steers in the 2012 Carcass Competition.
3 BULL SALES
The 2012 Bull Sale Season has been a mixed bag. The two main sales in KZN being the Griffin
Sale and the EG Bull Sale. At the combined Griffin/Long/Brown sale 29 bulls were sold at an
average of R17 290.00. At the EG Bull Sale 9 Hereford bulls were sold at an average of R21 777.
Highest price of R28 000.
A number of factors influences the Bull Market and obviously we have to devise strategies
to address these issues.
The factors influencing the market are some of the following:
• The number of Breeds – about 54 Breeds
• Synthetic Breeds that are the flavor of the month
• Number of Bulls for Sale
• Marketing
• Weaner Prices
• Economy/Maize Price
4 CONCLUSION
In conclusion I would like to thank our very effective and efficient secretary, Anne for all her
very hard work for her absolute efficiency in guiding, prodding and advising and just doing
things. It has been an honour to serve with her.
We are also bidding Grant & Lu Cobus a sad fair well as they emigrate to New Zealand. We
will sorely miss them.
To all our members that are keeping our Club going – thank you for your support.
May 2013 be a very blessed year for all of our members.
Anne Louwrens
For the second year running
the KZN Hereford Club has
organised a very successful
family weekend at Lake
St Bernard in the Southern
Drakensberg.
This is an ideal and very scenic venue
with well equipped self-catering chalets
overlooking the beautiful lake, lending
itself to a very enjoyable weekend with
72 Hereford2013
much laughter, fun and camaraderie, scrumptious
catering, lots of activity…walks, trout fishing, canoeing,
Bushman paintings (quite a climb, climb, climb, for some
of us!! – but well worth the effort when we got there –
striking paintings and beautiful view) and, of course, lots
of Hereford discussions!!
These have indeed been very successful get-togethers in
relaxed, informal surroundings. We hope it will become
an annual event and look forward to our outing in 2013.

VOORSITTERSVERSLAG
Pieter Jonker
Met al die stakings en plaasaanvalle gaan
dit nie soos dit moet gaan nie. Dit bly by my:
vriende bymekaar. Daar is weer planne
Nampo was weer ‘n belewenis Noordwes
by Nampo word elke jaar net beter .
Met die September 2012 bulveiling het dit
glad nie goed gegaan nie. Die bulle wat
aangebied was, was goeie bulle, maar amper
geen belangstelling. Nogmaals baie dankie
baie waardeer.
Nogmaals baie dankie. Glo en vertrou dit sal
volgende jaar beter gaan .
ons was in 2012 .
Philip de Waal
Die jaar 2012 is ‘n jaar wat alle
boere in die Wes- en Suid-Kaap
vir ‘n lang tyd sal onthou.Beide
Kaap is daar. Philip en Cora de Waal, Bertus
en Sonja Mong en Danie en Lizette van Breda
het die Wêreld Hereford Kongres in Alberta
Kanada bygewoon.
Calgary.
Elders wat ons so gasvry in Durbanville by
die kantoor ontvang.Dankie aan Robertson,

ontvang. Dankie aan die bestuuslede
wat saam my dien en my taak as
voorsitter so maklik maak.
Dan Laastens dankie aan ons
Eastern Cape
Chairman
The Eastern Cape was blessed
with satisfactory rain in 2012,
with a large part of the province
experiencing above normal
amounts of moisture in the
winter. Generally the cattle
were in excellent condition as a result of an
abundance of veld and what a privilege to
be farming with Herefords as they were picture
perfect. The latter part of the year was met by
tighter financial conditions, but I think that the
Eastern Cape Hereford Breeders were able to
offer a very satisfactory sale string of Herefords
to the market. The following sale results were
achieved:
26 th Annual Brakfontein Production Sale
-Dumisa Herefords- JJ and John Park
17 Herefords came under the hammer and
the top price paid was R40 000 for Lot 32 & 33,
which were bought by local farmers; Lochard
Ainslie and Lionel Zunckel of Natal respectively.
The average price paid was R30 352.
FF 10-202, Lot 32
FF 10-230, Lot 33
16 th Annual Kenrussmark Poll Herefords Production
Sale – Russell and Ed Clark
On the 11 th October 2012, 13 Hereford bulls sold for an
average of R24 307. Messers Chris and Greg Sephton
from Barkley East bought the top selling bull, KRM 10-
024 for R60 000. A half share of KRM 10-010 was sold to
Mr Howard Long of GBH Herefords for R46 000.
KRM 10-024
14 th Annual Kevlynn Herefords Production Sale - Kevin
and Carl Miles
On the 18 th of September 2012 Kevlynn Herefords held
their 14 th annual Production Sale. A 100% clearance
of the 6 Hereford bulls on offer was achieved at an
average price of R19 666. The top price of R24 000 was
paid by Mr Eric Truter from Tarkastad. All 21 Angus bulls
on sale were also sold. We wish to thank all buyers for
their support.
Annual Syferpan Herefords Production Sale -
Lawrence Moorcroft
On the 28 th September 2012, 20 Hereford bulls sold
Cedara COLLEGE 2013
80
Hereford2013
As I come to the end of time at Cedara College, I wish to take a moment
to reflect back on the College’s Hereford herd and more importantly how
this herd has been instrumental in the training of young men and women
in beef cattle. On the 22nd June 2008, Cedara College took possession
of its first registered Herefords. These animals came from far and wide and
where purchased from established stud breeders throughout South Africa.
We began with 18 heifers and have since produced 17 heifers from the calf crops of 2009
to 2012. We have also selected 4 young bulls from these crops which have potential for
future breeding.
Second year students at the College compete
annually in the Commercial Cattle and Future Farmers
competitions at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg,
whilst the third year students have since 2009, joined
the Hereford Stud breeders at the Royal. This has
been an opportunity to expose students not only to
commercial beef production but for those in their final
year of study, to the world of stud cattle and being
able to rub shoulders with farmers who have been in
the stud world for years and for some, generations.
It is wonderful for me to watch how these students
observe and relate to the experienced farmers and
to hear the stories they bring home to the college of
their experience at the Royal. It is without a doubt
a wonderful learning experience for them and
although they do not have the same quality animals
as those who have been in the game for years, they
certainly give of their best and hold their heads up
high when amongst the cream of the crop.
I have had many hours of great joy working with
the students over the years and there has been a
measure of heartache and frustration too. Working
within the boundaries of a government organisation
as we do, presents numerous challenges, but we
forge forward and do what we can to ensure that
our students are able to be exposed to the reality of
farming. I believe that both the steer project, followed
by the stud programme gives these young men and
women valuable exposure to feeding, health care,
ration balancing, animal behaviour and handling
and training and show preparation of cattle. These
Lu Kobus
students put in hours of hard work with their animals
and they develop a deep sense of love, respect and
responsibility for “their” animals. What more could I
ask for? I know that these students won’t all become
cattle farmers, but at least I know that they have had
the opportunity to be exposed to this and for some it
is the start of a new found love and passion and an
area which they wish to develop and explore further.
Sadly, I will not be at Cedara to see this group
of students compete at the Royal but I will be
following their progress from the New Zealand shores.
Although I know a great new adventure awaits the
Kobus family, I also have a quite emptiness within me
knowing that I am leaving something that I started
behind. I wish to thank the wider KZN Hereford family
for all their support in this venture and ask that they
continue to support the College in my absence.
