• Define a Grade Scale: A. B+. B. etc
• Define Grade Components : Quiz, Test, Mid-term, etc.
• Enter students’ marks for each grade component
• Verify Final Grade Sheet and check Banner web for final mark
NOTE: All grades must be in for final grades to roll into Banner. If
individual student’s grades are complete they will roll into
Banner.

Banner Gradebook – Define Grade Components
From the Faculty Services Menu choose Grade Components
• A final grade is based on a system of components.
– 4 grades (2 exams, homework and a final) equals 4 graded
components
– Components and sub-components
– Component can be weighted
• The same grading structure applies to all students in a section
– Giving extra credit harder to do but it’s not impossible
• Changing the structure during the term is not recommended

5
Banner Gradebook – Define Grade Components
• You define each component and Banner calculates the grade
• Sequence numbers allow you to change the order of how components
appear on the web.
• Example of Component Names TEST 1, MID-TERM, PAPER 1, LAB 1,
etc.
• Clearly describe your Components
– can be up to 210 characters
– description appears on the web
• Can be used as a form of online syllabus.
• Detailed descriptions can (and will) require maintenance!

• Due Date
• Must Pass
• Include M/F
• Delete Mark
Define Grade Components

Assigning Weight to Scores
If Component Scores are
weighted as percentages:
Exam = 60%
Homework = 15%
Lab = 25%
If all components carry the
same, give each
component a weigh of 1
7
Define Grade Components

8
Define Sub-components
Define sub-components just as you define a component
• The “ Best of ” criteria
– “Best of” drops the lowest scores and uses the remaining ones to
calculate the grade.
– EG: Best of = 4 (out of 5)
– All grades must be filled in to calculate!
• Use “ Best of ” when you’re going to be dropping low scores.
– That way, Banner will do it for you!

9
Define Sub-Components
Click on the component link to enter sub-components
E.G. Click on Quizzes to add a series of Quizzes or a “Best of” sub-set

10
Define Sub-components
Use “OR” when using “Best Of” scenario under A/O column

11
Banner Gradebook – Enter Component Marks
• Choose Electronic Gradebook by Component from the Faculty menu
• Click on the Component Link to enter grades
• For Subcomponents, click on View

marks for a particular student.

14
Grade Book by Student
• Adjust student’s marks so the final grade reflects grade you are giving
the student (allow for extra credit, etc.)

15
Grading Subcomponents
• To grade Subcomponents, click on View, enter scores and Submit
• Click “Back to Components Page” to continue grading

16
Academic History Impact
• Near end of semester the Registrar’s Office will “Roll” grades to History
on a nightly basis.
• This has a direct impact on Gradebooks!
– If a Gradebook is “complete”, Banner automatically closes out the
Gradebook and rolls the grades to history.
– Check the Final Grade Sheet for individual students on the same
day you enter the marks for his/her last component!
– Once rolled, you cannot change the grades in the Electronic
Gradebook!
– Finish creating your course early in the Term!

17
What the Student Sees!

18
How Banner Does the Math – One example
The final grade is calculated as the weighted average of the scores as a percentage.
If you have 3 components (Quiz, Mid-term and Final) - each is marked out of 100.
– Weight of Quiz = 1
– Weight of Mid-term = 2
– Weight of Final = 3
•Student gets 90 for Quiz, 80 for Mid-term and 70 for Final, the final grade calculation is:
[(Quiz % score * weight) + (Mid-term % score * weight) + (Final % score *
weight)] / [(Quiz weight) + (Mid-term weight) + (Final weight)]
[ (90 * 1) + (80 * 2) + (70 * 3)] / [1 + 2 + 3]
[90 + 160 + 210] / [6]
460 / 6
76.67%

Before you begin…
• Plan, Plan, Plan…
19
– Choose a name for your grade scale definition, e.g.,
your email account name and “U” for undergraduate,
“G” for graduate: clarkeaU
– Decide on your grade scale: A =, B+ =, etc.
– Determine your Grade Components: quiz, test, etc.
– Decide if you want Sub-components
