Mark Anthony Bracegirdle was an activist in Ceylon on behalf of Tamil tea plantation labourer’s rights. After Bracegirdle spoke at a
rally of 2000 plantation workers, the Governor, Sir Reginald Stubbs, was prevailed upon to issue a deportation order. Bracegirdle went
underground, defying the deportation order and humiliating the British Colonial Government. Some 50,000 workers attended the next
rally where Bracegirdle spoke. A few days later he was arrested, but at his trial, his defence successfully argued that he could not be
deported for exercising his right of free speech. Stubbs retired shortly after.
