word. In baie opsigte is omstandighede dieselfde as in 2007.
skerp styging in produkpryse beleef.
oeste in verskeie ander lande.
styging in internasionale landbouprodukpryse vanaf 2006
tot 2008. Teen Maart 2008 was landbouprodukpryse 56%
hoer as in Maart 2007.
Is a repeat of 2008 on its way?
Grain price fluctuations over the past few months and
reports on the failure of the USA maize harvest have led to
fears that there will be a repeat of the 2008 feed crisis. In
many respects conditions are similar to those in 2007. Global
agriculture had experienced an abnormally sharp increase in
produce prices from 2007 to 2008. This was due to a strange
coincidence now described as a perfect storm. The most
important factor contributing to this was the sharp increase
in the demand for grain. The demand arose as result of the
growth in income of consumers in developing countries,
which led to an increase in the demand for protein foodstuffs,
especially animal protein. Protein production requires more
grain than is needed in human diets. At the same time the
bio-fuel industry took off in America which grew rapidly due
to government support. By mid 2007 the production and
utilization of grain was in a fine balance and prices slowly
moved upwards. World economic growth was on a very high
level. A perfect storm can, however, only evolve when there is
also a shock from outside. This shock was caused by droughts
in Australia and Kazakstan and poor harvests in several other
countries.
The extent of the perfect storm is indicated by the increase
in international prices of agricultural produce from 2006
to 2008. By March 2008 agricultural produce prices were
56% higher than in March 2007. Although the rate had
slowed down since then, prices still increased rapidly till
September 2008. Thereafter price increases were brought
to a halt by a very large external shock – the collapse of the
Western bank system and resulting recession. World demand
collapsed, production decreased, property and stock prices
decreased and unemployment increased. Brisk/firm action
by governments restricted the duration of the recession
and led to the recovery of economic growth with a resulting
rise in prices. The recovery phase was restricted due to the
mainly European debt crisis, resulting from overspending in
the recession, as well as the very high expenditure on social
pensions. As a result agricultural prices once more entered a
declining phase in November 2011.

groei in pryse.
Kazakhstan.
2011/12. Terselfdertyd word die eindvoorraad growwe graan
beraam op 152 miljoen ton, 11 af op 2011/12. Rys voorrade
is egter meer as in 2011/12.
teen moontlike prysskokke.
The present international supply and demand
In the latest USA Department of Agriculture report on grain
production and reserves the expected wheat harvest for the
2012/13 season was adjusted downwards as result of the
smaller area planted and hot weather in July in Russia and
Kazakhstan. The expected consumption of wheat is, however,
adjusted upwards as result of the substitution of wheat for
maize in livestock feeding. In the USA the maize harvest is
adjusted sharply downwards, since the hot and dry conditions
in the Maize Belt are continuing. The USA harvest is currently
estimated at the, lowest level since 2006/7. The World grain
supplies by the end of 2012/13 is estimated at 431 million ton,
95% lower than in 2011/12. At the same time the end supply
of unmilled grain is estimated to be 152 million tons, 11 tons
below that of 2011/2012. Rice supplies are, however, higher
than in 2011/2012. According to the Food and Agriculture
organization of the United Nations (FAO) there is currently
enough grain supplies available and there should be no crisis.
The supply demand balance is, however, very fine and any
further shocks can have a serious effect on prices.
South African situation
South Africa has been through two seasons of above average
maize production. Notwithstanding the fact that large
quantities of maize have been exported, Safex prices seldom
moved closer to export parity and mostly traded very close
to import parity. Exports to countries in Africa trade at world
prices plus the cost of landing maize locally, which is, of
course, more than the calculated export parity. The demand
for grain for the African and other markets will not decrease.
It will place ungoing pressure on grain prices during the
current season. Government has also recently announced
that compulsory inclusion of bio-fuel is to be introduced.
This creates additional markets for grains.
The red meat industry is a large consumer of grains. Producers
who round off animals themselves should take timely action
against possible price shocks. While it is still uncertain
whether the world will again experience a perfect storm such
as in 2007 and 2008, the intelligent action is to avoid price
hikes and not be caught off-guard.
Jongboerdag
Volgens hom is
algemeen in boerderygeledere is.
agri benchmark Beef and Sheep Conference 2012 – Press release
Beef and sheep
production need to be more productive
Growing demand, rising prices and
costs as well as and land scarcity will
require further productivity increases
in beef and sheep production if
production is to be maintained or
increased, agreed the participants
of the 10th agri benchmark Beef and
Sheep Conference which took place in South Africa end
of June. More than 25 countries are represented in the global
network, including Algeria, Morocco, Russia and Tunisia as
new members.
The international comparison of production systems and
their economics is the core competence of agri benchmark
and were discussed in the context of rising and more volatile
costs for feed and other inputs. Recent feed price increases
were relatively well absorbed by cow-calf operations which
mainly rely on pastures, use less purchased inputs than beef
finishers and where profitability is in short-term more driven
by weaner calf prices than by costs. In the beef finishing
comparison of the year 2011, in many countries, feed, land and
labour costs increases could at least partially be compensated
by beef price increases to retain profitability. This is different
in the U.S. feedlots where high feed prices were accompanied
by historically high feeder/stocker cattle prices, resulting
in another year of loss and over the last years pointing at a
combination of high competition and overcapacity in the
feedlot industry given current cattle inventories.
Asia and Africa are expected to lead global population growth
in the next 35 years. This and an expected per capita income
growth will most likely result in growing meat demand. In
North African countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria,
land degradation, informal markets and their implications for
meat quality and safety are main constraints. On the other
hand, the cost structure of many smallholder farms can
relatively easily absorb impacts from price volatility. Finding a
balance between sustainable stocking rates, individual animal
performance and income needs is one of the key factors for
unlocking the potential of this type of production. In terms
of disease status and considering the proximity of farming
with livestock and game, it was questioned whether Southern
Africa will manage to overcome the issues with FMD and other
diseases. This will also impact on the ability of the industry to
create a significant export orientated industry.
Asia and Russia are leading the import demand for beef. At
the same time, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan have rolled out
government programmes to increase production of beef and
other products such as milk. Large scale agricultural holdings
are among the beneficiaries of these programmes. In EU
countries, a stable to slightly decreasing beef production
appears to be the future trend, with uncertain impacts
from the policy reform starting in 2014 and the milk quota
abolishment in 2015.
Land expansion to maintain or increase beef production is a
medium- to long-term option in some countries, but requires
political stability, investments and sufficiently high prices to
justify them. Further, it is questionable whether new land is
going to be used for beef production. Therefore, narrowing
the productivity gap between countries as well as between
the top and bottom producers within countries will be crucial.
Potential is particularly high when coming from a low level
like smallholder farms in developing and emerging countries
but also in important beef producing countries like Brazil
and Argentina. In those countries where weaner supply
is tightening (ex. South Africa), increasing the calf crop is a
major aim. The two major alleyways to increase productivity
are firstly the improvement of pasture productivity and its
management and secondly moving animals from pasture to
higher energy rations for the last 90-150 days (i.e. a feedlotlike
situation). It is expected that in the short- to mediumterm,
market signals provide the incentives but they can
also (or have already) lead to undesired side effects such as
overgrazing, water pollution and animal welfare issues. The
single most important challenge to any productivity increase
is management skills. Capacity building, education and
mentoring were therefore defined as most important but need
to be embedded in a strategy which should be developed by

all actors in the value chains. Finally, policy interventions on land acquisition and use
can foster or slow down productivity developments.
A workshop labelled ‘The return of the sheep’ addressed the question of whether
the latest price rises for lamb and mutton will lead to an increase of production and
an expansion of sheep production. The answer was a cautious and differentiated
‘yes’. Demand in Asia and the Middle East is expected to further drive prices and
provide a good basis for profitable sheep production. Potential is mainly seen
in developing and emerging countries as well as Australia where recently some
regional expansion of sheep production at the expense of beef production has taken
place. In the former group of countries issues like overstocking, land degradation,
productivity and meat quality need to be addressed but as most of these countries
come from a low level, progress could be made relatively quickly if price relations
remain favourable. In some cases the supply chains need restructuring to reduce
unrealistically high consumer – producer price ratios. With an increase of 78% in the
weight produced per ewe in the last 20 years, New Zealand provides an example for
the potential, compensating for the decline in sheep numbers.
A Global Forum in Pretoria saw 120 decision makers from policy, agribusiness,
research and NGOs, discussing a mix of international and domestic South African
topics. Apart from the above mentioned issues, the importance of sustainability,
government intervention addressing the creation of a better market environment
instead of handing out subsidies, the impact of domestic demand growth in Brazil
resulting in higher prices and reduced exports, the special needs of emerging
markets and the old but true fact that eventually consumers determine the direction
into which meat production is heading to were stressed by the speakers.
legendariese Oom Albert Diedericks. Tydens die
veiling is RX405 as jong bulletjie vertoon en ‘n rooi
vers was gekoop vir R2,000.00 deur dieselfde Oom
Albert Diedericks. Met R2,000.00 kon mens toe ‘n
nuwe bakkie koop!!
gebruik as klubhuis!
Sakke vol
geld!! Rooi brahmane het skielik baie gesog geraak
en teen hoë pryse verkoop. Soveel so dat Oom Boet
Nel vir my in 1980 kon sê: “As jy 10 suiwer rooi koeie
‘n vinnige dood laat sterf.
In Transvaal was die
bekende stoettelers Eric Bilse, Biss Reed, Theo Dicke, Llewellyn

kon aangaan.
Natalklub Voorsitter, toe raadslid.
Pryse daal, entoesiasme taan. ‘n Periode van verlangsaming en
vasbyt het ingetree..... ons gesels weer later.
Suurlemoen
Redes hoekom jy daarvan moet eet:
daaroor gooi.

THAN FARMING
BRAHMAN ART by DENISE HILL
My love of Brahmans began
while travelling the road from
Fouriiesburg to Clarens in the
Eastern Free State. I have always
from childhood in the gentle
English countryside loved cattle, heavy-uddered
Friesians and soft-eyed Jersey cows. Seeing a herd of
Brahmans grazing under the shade of a wild peach
tree with the Maloti mountains in the background
and the rolling wheatfields in the foreground was
an artist’s dream come true. There is something
special about Brahmans. I know very little about
their commercial value, but their sheer beauty, their
heavy curved lines, their wavy dewlaps catching the
shade and light sent me rushing for my paintbrushes
and canvas.
A local well-known and loved character, Casper
Exteen, was very supportive in my quest to find local
herds; starting with his brother Fourie’s Brahmans.
They kindly drove their herd to the farm dam
where Fourie’s wife, Leandi and I were waiting with
our cameras. This resulted in one of my favourite
paintings of white Brahmans reflected in water. I
was also introduced to the magnificent herds at
Brandwater Boerdery, owned by Linde du Plessis. I
spent many happy hours capturing the shapes and
shadows of the young and mature bulls and cows
with their calves in this wonderful peaceful setting.
Linde du Plessis and his family have farmed these
lands for many generations, and one gets a real
sense of knowledge, permanence and history.
In July I staged an exhibition of my paintings at
Brandwater Boerdery during an auction held on
the farm. This was an exciting experience for me,
meeting local farmers and their families with whom
I previously had very little contact. My ambition now
is to travel the country painting other Brahman herds
with their natural landscapes in the background.
Piouter
snuistery
“trinket” houer
Benodighede: kunsmessie en snymat, piouter, harde oppervlakte,
vilt, bolinstument (natrekker), papierpen, byewas, patina,
handskoen, Brasso, gom, “batting’, watte, baie fyn staalwol en
houer.
NB.
natrekker (klein balletjie). Dit moet nie skuif op die piouter
totdat ontwerp klaar afgetrek is nie. Verwyder die ontwerp.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . en sie daar, ‘n pronkstuk!
AFRICAN
FARMERS WORKSHOP
Die stalletjies van Die Brahman Beestelersgenootskap
en Marinus van Jaarsveld (Meadowood Brahmane) is
saamgevoeg en kon sodoende 14 Brahmane uitstal tydens
die “African Farmers Workshop”. Met die toestemming van die
Raad is Mnre. Riaan Theron (RAT Brahmane), Andries Marx
gemaak by die stalletjies.
verskeie mense ontmoet.
maak Mag”. Hierdie stelling is meer merkwaardig aangesien
15 – 17 AUGUSTUS/AUGUST 2012
Marinus van Jaarsveld & Sytze Smit
The stalls of the Brahman Cattle Breeders’ Society and that
of Marinus van Jaarsveld (Meadowood Brahmane) were
grouped together and 14 Brahmans could be exhibited at
the “African Farmers’ Workshop”. With the permission of
Council, Vaalriver Club members, Messrs Riaan Theron (RAT
Brahmans), Andries Marx (Marxville Brahmans) and Pieter de
Bruin (Madiba), were invited to exhibit cattle at this occasion.
Several of our breeders, some as far as Natal, paid a visit to
the stalls.
On 16 August 2012 there was an information session in
the auditorium and Marinus van Jaarsveld addressed 120
interested attendants on the origin of the Brahman, its value
and the present day Brahman in Africa. Delegates and others
in the audience were enthused into asking many questions,
which were answered in detail at the physical exhibition area
after the lecture.
Various visitors were received at the stall after the talk and
were very impressed by the stall and the Brahman breed in
general.
Clothing of the Brahman Cattle Breeders’ Society was sold,
in particular promotional articles, such as hats, stickers,
and casual shirts. Brochures and Brahman Journals were
distributed and contact was made with many people in the
process.
On the Thursday morning we were surprised by a group
of students, most of them from the Vaal National Youth
Development Association (NYDA). Students from other
tertiary institutions as far as Venda and Polokwane also paid
us a visit.
On Thursday evening during the gala dinner a member of
the Executive Council of Gauteng extended a special word
of thanks to the farmers who attended and concluded with
is.
the citation “Unity is Strength”. This citation was especially
appropriate, seen in the light of the presentation that
was made at this occasion to black emerging farmers who
had proved themselves through hard work and the use of
knowledge supplied by other farming segments.
Acording to the organizers about 5 000 people passed
through the gates and it appears to have been the largest
show of this kind presented to African Farmers.
Sytze Smit attended the proceedings and could assisit several
interested people with good advice. Riaan, Pieter and Andries
also spent much time there and I can categorically say that
the Brahman was served and promoted. The Brahmans were
in the forefront and anyone wanting to obtain information
could readily receive it and also see the animals and ask
questions.
It is clear that there will always be a market for quality
Brahmans. Emerging and young potential farmers put the
Brahman as one of their first choices. The challenge lies in
presenting this segment of the market with good productive
animals at reasonable prices.
