School marks/grades
Marks (cijfers) at school and university in Holland are given out of ten,
not as percentages. One expresses marks as follows:
Ik heb een zes voor wiskunde gekregen.
I got 60% for mathematics.
Marks are often expressed as follows instead of referring to the mathematical
figure:
uitmuntend = 10 bijna onvoldoende = 5
zeer goed = 9 onvoldoende = 4
goed = 8 zeer onvoldoende = 3
ruim voldoende = 7 slecht = 2
voldoende = 6 zeer slecht = 1
In a more general sense een onvoldoende is a fail (i.e. five or less):
Ik heb een onvoldoende voor geschiedenis gekregen.
I failed history.
Otherwise the verbs slagen/zakken voor are used to express ‘to pass/fail’
a test or exam; both verbs require zijn:
Ik ben voor geschiedenis geslaagd/gezakt.
I passed/failed history.
