Use of heen with prepositions<br />

Several prepositions are used together with heen (which follows the noun)<br />

to indicate direction. 7 The meaning of a preposition + noun + heen is<br />

similar to that explained in 13.2.1 above, but it may express a figurative<br />

meaning, as some of the following examples illustrate:<br />

Hij liep dwars door het perkje He walked right through the<br />

met bloemen heen. flower bed.<br />

door de eeuwen heen over the centuries<br />

7 Heen on its own, i.e. not used in combination with another preposition but as a<br />

separable prefix, is synonymous with naartoe (see 10.4) but is higher style:<br />

We gaan er morgen heen/naartoe.<br />

We are going there tomorrow.
