Notes
dat
Note that ‘that’ is very often omitted in English but never in Dutch:
Hij zei dat hij morgen zou komen.
He said (that) he would come tomorrow.
De eerste keer dat ze het zei . . .
The first time (that) she said it . . .
Not only the subordinating conjunction ‘that’ is dropped in English but
also the relative pronoun ‘that’; this pronoun, which is either die or dat
in Dutch, may not be omitted either (see 8.5.1).
In colloquial speech a superfluous dat is sometimes used after other
subordinate conjunctions and interrogative adverbs in indirect questions
(see 12.6):
Ik weet niet waar dat ze wonen.
I don’t know where they live.
Nu dat ik rijk ben . . .
Now (that) I am rich . . .
