Impersonal verbs<br />

Impersonal verbs are those which only occur in the third person (usually<br />

only in the singular, but some can occur in the plural too). In the third<br />

person singular the subject is always het. English has impersonal verbs<br />

too but Dutch has more of them.<br />

Verbs that are impersonal in English and Dutch<br />

Verbs denoting weather conditions which are used only in the third person<br />

singular:<br />

Het bliksemt. There’s lightning.<br />

Het dondert. It’s thundering.<br />

Het dooit. It’s thawing.<br />

Het hagelt. It’s hailing.<br />

Het mist. There’s a fog.<br />

Het onweert. There’s a thunderstorm raging.<br />

Het regent. It’s raining.<br />

Het schemert. It’s dawning, It’s twilight.<br />

Het sneeuwt. It’s snowing.<br />

Het stormt. There’s a storm raging.<br />

Het trekt/tocht. There’s a draught.<br />
