There are basically two sorts of reflexive verb:<br />

(a) Those that are always reflexive.<br />

(b) Those that may be used reflexively but which can also be used as<br />

transitive verbs with direct objects (such as scheren above).<br />

It is impossible to list all the verbs in both groups but the list under<br />

11.17.1 will serve to illustrate the concept.<br />

The reflexive pronouns are as follows:<br />

Singular Plural<br />

1st person me (form. mij) myself ons ourselves<br />

2nd person je yourself je yourselves<br />

u/zich yourself u/zich yourselves<br />

3rd person zich himself zich themselves<br />

zich herself<br />

zich itself<br />

zich oneself<br />

Examples:<br />

ik heb me gewassen wij hebben ons gewassen<br />

‘I washed (myself)’ etc.<br />

jij hebt je gewassen jullie hebben je gewassen<br />

u hebt u gewassen u hebt u gewassen<br />

u heeft zich gewassen u heeft zich gewassen<br />

hij heeft zich gewassen zij hebben zich gewassen<br />

zij heeft zich gewassen<br />

het heeft zich gewassen<br />

men heeft zich gewassen<br />

The reflexive u should be used with hebt and zich with heeft, i.e. a second<br />

person reflexive pronoun with a second person verb and a third person<br />

reflexive pronoun with a third person verb, although in practice one will<br />

hear u hebt zich (but not u heeft u). When the subject pronoun and the
