Word order with modals<br />

In main clauses the order of the constituent parts of the passive with a<br />

modal verb can be either of the following:<br />

Dat kan gedaan worden/Dat kan worden gedaan.<br />

That can be done.<br />

Dat zou gedaan moeten worden/Dat zou moeten worden<br />

gedaan.<br />

That should be done.<br />

In subordinate clauses the following alternatives exist (the finite verb is<br />

never placed after the verbal cluster).<br />

Ik weet dat het gedaan kan worden/Ik weet dat het kan<br />

worden gedaan. (never *gedaan worden kan)<br />

Hij zei dat het gedaan zou moeten worden/Hij zei dat het<br />

zou moeten worden gedaan.<br />

Contracted conditionals in the passive<br />

Contracted forms of zijn are common in the passive (see 11.1.8):<br />

De stad was vernietigd als . . ./De stad zou vernietigd zijn<br />

als . . .<br />

The city would have been destroyed if . . .<br />

Het boek was eerder gelezen als . . ./Het boek zou eerder<br />

gelezen zijn als . . .<br />

The book would have been read sooner if . . .<br />

It is common in journalese and other written style to replace a clause<br />

containing a passive with an adjectival phrase containing a past participle<br />

(or very occasionally an infinitive) placed before the relevant noun:

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
