The verbs proberen and trachten ‘to try’ can occur in a double infinitive<br />

construction like that of the above verbs but they always require te:<br />

Hij probeerde mij te helpen.<br />

He tried to help me.<br />

Hij heeft mij proberen te helpen.<br />

He (has) tried to help me.<br />

A double infinitive can be avoided here by employing the following<br />

construction, which is in fact just as commonly used as the above:<br />

Hij heeft geprobeerd mij te helpen.<br />

The verb beginnen, when used in the perfect tense and followed by another<br />

infinitive, usually follows the regular pattern of past participle + te + infinitive<br />

but it can also follow the same pattern as proberen, using the infinitive<br />

instead of the past participle:<br />

Toen is het kind begonnen te schreeuwen.<br />

Toen is het kind beginnen te schreeuwen.<br />

Then the child started to scream/screaming.<br />

Hij is begonnen een brief te schrijven.<br />

Hij is een brief beginnen te schrijven.<br />

He began to write/writing a letter.<br />

Similarly the verb weten, which literally means ‘to know’ but renders English<br />

‘to manage’ in such constructions:<br />

Hij wist te ontsnappen.<br />

He managed to escape.<br />

Hij heeft het weten te vinden.<br />

He (has) managed to find it.<br />

When the following verbs are used as finite verbs and are followed by an<br />

infinitive, the infinitive is not preceded by te:<br />

horen gaan helpen laten hebben blijven<br />

zien komen leren doen wezen vinden<br />
