and is still productive to a degree, particularly in the spoken language:<br />

kortweg in short<br />

pakweg about, approximately, say<br />

These adverbs express the speaker’s orientation towards or confidence in<br />

the statement being made.<br />

Eens, even, maar, nou and toch are all so-called adverbs of modality, in<br />

addition to the other grammatical functions some of them have. They add<br />

a variety of subtle nuances to statements. They are tricky to master because<br />

they seldom have any consistent, direct equivalent in English. They are<br />

also used much more commonly in speech than in writing. The best way
