INDABA 2007
This year INDABA (the only
Tourism Trade Show in
South Africa) took place from
12—15 May at the International
Exhibition Centre in
Durban. As you may have
seen in the local press there
was once again a large contingent
of local products present
at Indaba.
According to the Indaba
2007 DAILY NEWS of Tuesday,
15 May 2007, on the
day before INDABA concluded,
a number of 12 200
delegates had already been
to the show. Statistics received
from Jacky Mokgawa
at KAGISO indicate the following:
Overall attendance at
Indaba 2004 was 9 629 delegates,
at Indaba 2005 it was
10 700, in 2006 it was 11
691 and in 2007 it was a
total of 12 523. It needs to
be noted that these figures
represent the overall attendance
numbers but from the
statistics available at the
time of writing it seems that
the visitor numbers to Indaba
have steadily been
increasing since 2004. Detailed
statistics for 2007 were
not available on date of this
report.
We had a stall on the space
of Garden Route Klein Karoo
(Eden District Municipality)
and we shared our space
with De Rust Tourism Bureau
(represented by Mrs Marie
Van Huyssteen from De Rust
Tourism Bureau). Thando
Abrahams went to Indaba
with us as part of a three
year development plan
(CTRU and Eden District Municipality)
and shared space
on the Garden Route Klein
Karoo Stall with approximately
10 other SMME’s from

that was made at Indaba is
once again available to any
Oudtshoorn Tourism Bureau
member on request. From
this list it is clear what the
tendencies were at Indaba
2007, but below follows a
few personal observations
regarding Indaba.

made contact with 125 members
of the visiting trade over
4 days. Interesting and new

The 2000 TOURISM@
OUDTSHOORN papers that
NEWS
we handed out and distributed at
Indaba drew many of the trade
visitors to our stall in order to
request information. This project
was a great success and we
thank Mr Nic Barrow and the Editor
and staff of Die Hoorn for the
initiative.
After Indaba we had a post Indaba
Tour consisting of 3 Indaba
delegates from India and 3 form
Russia who requested to travel to
our region. We met them and
marketed our region while they
were here.
My sincere thanks to Mr Stefaan
Verlinde for the many ways in
which he (at his own cost) made
Indaba 2007 memorable for me.

IF GAMKASKLOOF IS (THE) HELL,
THEN HEAVEN MUST BE SOME
PLACE OUT OF THIS WORLD
I have often been rather rudely
told to go to Hell, but this time
Cape Nature graciously invited
me to join them on a working trip
to the Hell, and as I have never
been and I often have to supply
information and answer enquiries
about Gamkaskloof, I
thought it might be a good idea
to experience (the) Hell first
hand so that I may also in future
speak with slightly more authority
about it.
We, that is Tony Marshall (the
Boss), Erika Swanepoel, Tippie
Lerm (all form Cape Nature in
Oudtshoorn) and I left for Gamkaskloof
on Tuesday, 29 May,
spent an unforgettable night in
the Snyman House in the Hell
and were safely back in
Oudtshoorn by Wednesday, 30
May. Now I can also say that I
have been to Hell and back (but
fortunately in a double cab bakkie
and not on a mountain bike -
a sight that not even I can manage
to imagine in my wildest
dreams).
Many aspects of Gamkaskloof
struck me and will be remembered
by me for the rest of my
existence, such as the
“Elandspad” (that, viewed from
the top, reminded me of pictures
of roads into places like Nepal
and Tibet), the beautifully and
carefully restored houses (with
enough mod cons to make finicky
visitors feel comfortable
but also with the option of using
an old black Dover Welcome
wood-burning stove and candles
if you preferred), the Godly silence
(that sort of takes you into
yourself where you find rest for
your inner being); Nature in its
purest form and the fauna -
especially the birds - who are so
“tame” that you constantly feel
you want to whisper because
you are in their domain and not
yours.
Then there are also the stars,
bravely peeping out from behind
some shy clouds when I was
there, that are so bright you feel
you can pluck them like ripe fruit
from a heavenly tree, and the
sun rising on a pristine morning,
a morning fresher than any
morning I had experienced
in a long time.
But the people, my hosts
from Oudtshoorn and Martin
and Elmarie Botha who are
the hosts in Hell, who took
the trouble of gently introducing
me to that special
place that we in the Klein
Karoo should be so very
proud of, were just as wonderful
as all the other unique
experiences that I had when
I was there.
Very special also was the
meticulous care that had
been taken and is still being
taken with the restoration
and upkeep of everything
that is Gamkaskloof. This
special place with its caring
custodians is truly a very
precious gem in the crown of
the Klein Karoo.

gasvrou, en hul seun, Morné,
het gesorg dat die ongeveer
40 lede van die OTB gesellig
saam kuier en sop, broodjies
en braaivleis geniet. Volgens
Sonja O’Donoghue, voorsitter
van die Uitvoerende Komitee,
wat alle teenwoordiges verwelkom
het, en so ver moontlik
ingelig het oor die huidige
stand van sake by die OTB,
was dit ‘n baie suksesvolle
opkoms gesien in die lig dat
dit die tweede keer is dat so ‘n
geleentheid deur die OTB
gereël is.
Sy het verder gesê dat die
Uitvoerende Komitee dit hoog
op prys stel dat raadslede
Japie Coetzee en Pierre Nel en
hul kollegas nog kans gesien
het om na afloop van ‘n uiters
belangrike munisipale vergadering
by ons aan te sluit.
Voorts gaan die OTB poog om
gereeld soortgelyke geleenthede
te skep sodat alle lede
van die OTB informeel kan
ontmoet, sake van gemeenskaplike
belang kan deurgesels
en met mekaar netwerk.
Sy het ook alle lede van die
OTB versoek om haar te kontak
indien hulle graag so ‘n

geleentheid by hullle produkte
wil hou, omdat ons
slegs op hierdie wyse kan
kennis neem van wat ons
mede-lede bied en wat hulle
behoeftes is.
Almal wat die geleentheid
bygewoon het, het ook die
fabriek van Lugro Ostrich
Leather Products besoek.
Baie dankie aan Lugro wat
bereid was om ons gaste op
’n vroegaand toer deur hul
fabriek te neem.
VERY POSITIVE
POST INDABA TOUR
TO THE GARDEN
ROUTE KLEIN KA-
ROO REGION
On 17 and 18 May 2007 we
had a group of INDABA delegates
on a post Indaba tour
in Oudtshoorn.
Relevant here is the fact that
these delegates to Indaba are
annually offered a selection
of pre and post Indaba tours
and that they have a choice
of which regions they would
like to visit before Indaba or
immediately after it. Also
rather significant in this case
is the fact that the group we
had this year consisted of a
very interesting selection of
inbound tourism role players
and that they chose to enter
our region via the N1, Prince
Albert and the Swartberg
Pass before they moved on to
the Garden Route. It is also
interesting to note that they
crossed the Swartberg Pass
just before we had the cold
spell and the thick layer of
snow on the Swartberg and
that they were literally shivering
in Plettenberg Bay when
the cold weather hit the entire
country.
The group consisted of Mr
Sekhar Seshan (Executive
Editor of Business India), Mr
Rajib Borah (News Editor of

The Times of India), Mr Salam Khan
(Senior Editor of The Economic Times—
New Delhi), Miss Irina Dikarewa (Tourism
Information Officer attached to the South
African Embassy in Moscow), Miss Elvira
Gasanova (Marketing Manager for Sun
International in Russia and the Baltics)
and Miss Emmanuelle Pythoud (Product
Manager Africa for Jerrycan Voyages in
Geneva, Switzerland)
All of them found their visit to the Klein
Karoo very interesting and enjoyable and
were looking forward to working closely
with us in future. We shall keep you
posted on any instances of return on
investment from this group - especially
from the journalists - and request the
relevant information from you as soon as
we receive requests from any of them.
MY PERSONAL TAKE ON
THE PRESENT SITUATION
CONCERNING THE
OUDTSHOORN TOURISM
BUREAU
Up to now I have not involved myself
with the present situation concerning the
entire debacle of the cutting of the municipal
grant for the next fiscal year, and
allow me to point out right at the very
outset that I do not intend to get involved
in the delicate negotiations in process at
the moment. There are several reasons
for this, but the main reasons obviously
are that I am the marketer, I am only an
ex officio member of the executive committee
of the OTB and I believe that I
have been appointed to serve the entire
tourism community in our region and it
would therefore - at this stage - be highly
insensitive of me to grab any kind of bull
by the horns and force it through any
kind of china shop that I would prefer not
even to enter.
This does not mean that I do not have any
views on the situation, because , whether
I like it or not, I just so happen to be a
part of the equation - as much a part at
least as all the other role players directly
or semi-directly involved in the tourism
industry in Oudtshoorn. It would therefore
be a very unfair untruth to say that I
have sat through the whole episode
without doing anything about it. When
the proverbial paw-paw struck the tourism
fan my initial reaction was to duck
and dive in order to avoid any sticky bits
and pieces splatting me. However, I
soon realised that I would be contributing
to the problem if I remained inactive
in stead of trying to find workable solutions
that may just save us from similar
situations in future.
The very first thing I realised was that
there was really no way any of us could
allow two years of hard (yet very enjoyable)
marketing just to stop, hoping that
until matters improve we can capitalise
on what we have achieved with relatively
little money in the past two years.
We would have to find a workable way
of continuing and improving on what we
have done in the past. Then I was overwhelmed
by the positive support I received
from all of you (for which I am
truly, deeply thankful) and I decided that
there was no alternative but to ask your
full support to help us find workable
solutions to the problem. Here I received
some good feedback, an example
of which is the email sent to me by Mr
Pieter van Eck, the new GM of the African
Sky Oudtshoorn Inn (See his email
reproduced elsewhere in this newsletter).
My research into the financial situations
of all my other colleagues in the Garden
Route Klein Karoo Region (whom I may
point out where just as supportive as all
our members) revealed that the OTB
doesn’t only need your financial support,
but that we may be in greater need
of your moral support and the leverage
you as members can yield to the OTB.
Let me site a simplistic example: If
your account (as an accommodation
facility in Oudtshoorn) for foods and
beverages from the local Pick n’ Pay is
what I think it is, them you may be in a
better position to convince the local Pick
‘n Pay that it is to their absolute advantage
to become a member of the OTB as
they benefit directly from the tourism
industry in our town.
I find it amazing that the Knysna Tourism
bureau, for example, have no problem
to get all the Estate Agents in their

region to be members of their tourism
bureau quite simply because they (the
estate agents) realize that they actually
benefit directly from the tourism industry
in Knysna, while the estate agents in
our region simply do not think it is necessary
to be involved (with small annual
membership fees) in the tourism industry
in our town. I have now sited only
two examples and may I assure you that
the list is endless. Maybe I don’t get it
right because I have a small staff complement
and we cannot afford to put one
person onto membership matters only.
The three of us have to try our best to
pay attention to every aspect of the running
of a bureau (and mark you, I am not
complaining, I am simply wondering if
it may be possible for all you very supportive
members to help us get it right).
It practically goes without saying that
the general community of our region
probably will not understand the effect
our marketing has on all of them until
this crisis really deepens to such an extent
that no marketing can be done for
Oudtshoorn nationally and internationally
for a period of two years, but then it
will be too late to remedy the damage.
Finally, no matter how we look at the
situation, we shall all jointly have to
make plans to accumulate a considerable
nest egg in order to survive any similar
situations in future and we shall all
jointly have to start making everybody
in our region aware of the importance of
tourism to all of them in order to considerably
enlarge our membership base.
And these are the instances in which we
really need your continued support.

die lede van die Besigheidskamer
gedoen het en waar die
inkorting van julle begroting
ook bespreek is. Ek het toe
dadelik gedink wat ons kan doen
om die probleem te hanteer. Ek
het toe gedink aan ’n “Levy” -
soortgelyk aan die Tourism
Levy wat die hotelle vra. Dit sal
miskien ’n legal issue raak maar
dit maak sin - almal wat in die
bedryf is - byvoorbeeld hotelle,
gastehuise, plekke waar ingangsfooi
van toepassing is.
Byvoorbeeld: Akkomodasie
instellings voeg R2-00 by hul
tarief - nie verpligtend - en die
bedrag word oorbetaal aan die
OTB. Die Grotte, volstruisplase,
ens doen dieselfde, al is
dit vir R1-00!
Ek weet nie hoeveel kamers
Oudtshoorn verkoop en hoeveel
voete deur die grotte, volstruisplase,
ens. loop nie - maar ek is
seker dit sal ’n verskil maak.
Ek dink net ons moet ’n bietjie
uit die boks dink oor die een.

TIM Team 2007 on their visit to
Oudtshoorn. They are f.l.t.r. (front):

Lim Sok Yee (Malasia), Esther Suurmond
(Netherlands) and Eden Thar
Nghaki ( Myanmar).
When I met them they were on their
way to Port Elizabeth. From there
they will be going back to Cape
Town and then on to India. We wish
them all Godspeed.
