The various population sizes of the urban settlements were categorised in five classes for
comparison of the 115 towns as listed in Table 4.2 and Figure 4.1.
A fundamental element of the individual town profiles was to expose the dominant economic
base of each town to better understand and appreciate the towns’ development and socio-
cultural potential. ∗ By evaluating each town’s rationale for existence, the individual
