OVERARCHING GOAL ‘…..TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ….’ i.e. …..development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs….. PGDS states that: sustainable social and economic development is imperative in order to address the most significant challenge facing the Northern Cape, i.e. poverty & the only effective means by which we can reduce poverty is through long‐term sustainable economic growth development. KEY ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Sustainable development occurs: At the intersection of three global imperatives, i.e. environmental integrity, human well‐being & economic efficiency. Where the three imperatives interact within an ‘interactive zone’. No sustainability outside this ‘interactive zone’. Sustainable development approach advocated by the PSDF constitutes the enhancement of human well‐ being and environmental integrity through the efficient use of the inherent resources (capital) of the province. Forms of capital Environmental Human Infrastructural Monetary Based upon the following principles: • Sustainable development cannot be ‘delivered’ to passive recipients –it has to be implemented in a participative and integrated manner. • Requires positive interventions and active participation of all concerned in a spirit of partnership. • Has to be ‘financed’ in an innovative manner.
