The LED Strategy estimates the population on 980 327 with a gender distribution of 49.1% males
and 50.9% females (refer to Table E.6 below), while the PGDS estimates a population size of 1 103
900 people, with a gender distribution of 542 700 (49.16%) males and 561 200 (50.84%) females.
The difference is estimated at 123 573 people, which is quite substantial, since the Northern Cape
never had a large population.

As illustrated by Table E.6, the Census data (2005) estimates a population for the Northern Cape of
991 919, and the Community Survey of 2007, estimates a population of 1 058 060 people. The LED
Strategy states that the Northern Cape accounts only for 2% of South Africa’s total population (i.e.
47 850 033), and the Northern Cape PDGS states that it forms a 2.3% share of the total population
of South Africa. The Northern Cape has the smallest population in South Africa and the lowest
average annual population growth from 1995 to 2007 in South Africa and of all the provinces.
According to the LED Strategy the average annual population growth for the Northern Cape from
1995 to 2007 was calculated at 0.3 % with South Africa’s growth rate for the same period was
estimated at 1.4%.
The Community Survey (2007) of StatsSA estimated that between the years of 1995 to 2001, the
population of the Northern Cape declined from 1 011 864 to 991 919 people at a change
Percentage of ‐2.0%. From 2001 to 2007, a change of 6.7% was experienced when the population
increased to 1 058 060 in 2007. According to the LED Strategy, the Pixley ka Seme is the only
district in the Northern Cape with a negative average annual population growth rate at ‐0.5, whilst
Namaqua and Siyanda both have the highest average population growth rates at 1%. Refer to
Table E.7 below that indicated the average population growth at district level in the Northern
Cape:
