FOREWORD<br />

Due to the dynamic nature <strong>of</strong> the <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong>erals</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> South Africa, it was deemed<br />

necessary, once aga<strong>in</strong>, to update the M<strong>in</strong>erals Bureau's directory on these <strong>commodities</strong>. The<br />

directory not only plays a pivotal role with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry, but also presents a holistic framework<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry to potential <strong>in</strong>vestors. It therefore plays an important role <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

country's m<strong>in</strong>eral <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

The <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> m<strong>in</strong>eral <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>of</strong> South Africa is relatively small compared with other metal/<br />

m<strong>in</strong>eral <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>in</strong> South Africa, but is still very important due to its strategic value. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry employed about 20 210 persons dur<strong>in</strong>g 2003. This figure <strong>in</strong>creases substantially if the<br />

add-on <strong>in</strong>dustries are also taken <strong>in</strong>to account. Dur<strong>in</strong>g 2003, some 28 different <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> m<strong>in</strong>eral<br />

<strong>commodities</strong>, exclud<strong>in</strong>g by-products from non-<strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> m<strong>in</strong>eral operations, were produced from<br />

about 750 m<strong>in</strong>es/quarries. Sand and aggregate <strong>producers</strong> represent about 70 percent <strong>of</strong> all<br />

<strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> m<strong>in</strong>eral <strong>producers</strong>. There were some 95 <strong>producers</strong> <strong>of</strong> clays (plastic, refractory and<br />

special clays), 52 dimension stone, 24 limestone and dolomite, 17 salt and 16 silica <strong>producers</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

2003.<br />

Aggregate and sand, phosphate rock concentrate, sulphur, dimension stone, andalusite<br />

(alum<strong>in</strong>o-silicate), vermiculite, silica and fluorspar are South Africa’s major <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong>erals</strong><br />

with regard to sales value. Most South African <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> m<strong>in</strong>es/quarries can be classified as<br />

small-scale. In addition, various forms <strong>of</strong> sulphur were recovered as by-products from other<br />

operations. The value <strong>of</strong> total sales <strong>of</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> <strong>m<strong>in</strong>erals</strong> amounted to more than R5,8 billion<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g 2003.<br />

Aggregate and sand, dimension stone and salt are the subjects <strong>of</strong> separate directories (D14, D9<br />

and D4 respectively).<br />

Data conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this, the n<strong>in</strong>th edition, were supplied by the various m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, manufactur<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

market<strong>in</strong>g companies listed, to whom due acknowledgement is made. Where available e-mail<br />

and web site addresses are also <strong>in</strong>cluded. Further details relat<strong>in</strong>g to South Africa's <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong><br />

<strong>m<strong>in</strong>erals</strong> are given <strong>in</strong> the Bureau's annual review <strong>of</strong> the South African m<strong>in</strong>eral <strong>in</strong>dustry (SAMI).<br />

We hope that this revised edition will once aga<strong>in</strong> prove itself valuable to the <strong>producers</strong>,<br />

marketers and consumers <strong>of</strong> South Africa's <strong><strong>in</strong>dustrial</strong> m<strong>in</strong>eral <strong>commodities</strong>.<br />
