RI PILOT PROGRAMMES
Rotary International is conducting four new pilot programs beginning 1 July
2011 through 30 June 2014 and is looking for clubs to participate in them.
In support of the RI Strategic Plan goal to 'foster club innovation and flexibility' the Board would
like to evaluate and measure the impact alternative membership types and club operations have on
member activities and engagement, membership growth and retention, improved member diversity,
increased community and inter-national service, increased support of The Rotary Foundation, and
overall club effectiveness. The following is a brief summary of each Pilot Programme:
Satellite Club - To allow a Rotary Club to conduct multiple club meetings during a week, each
taking place at a different location, a different day and/or a different time.
Corporate Membership - will allow a corporation or company in the Club's area to become a
member of the Rotary Club, through a Club established membership approval process, and appoint
a certain number of Designees as the individuals attending meetings, serving on projects, voting on
Club matters, serving as club officers and on club committees, etc.
Associate Membership - will allow an individual to become associated and acquainted with a
Rotary Club, its members, its programmes and projects, and the expectations of Club membership
with the intent of becoming an active member within a designated period of time.
Innovation & Flexibility - focuses on letting Clubs self-determine their operations to fit better with
their members' and community needs. Clubs will be authorized to make changes to the Standard
Rotary Club Constitution and to their Rotary Club Bylaws in any area other than RI membership
dues requirements.
A total of 200 clubs will be accepted to participate in each pilot, with a goal of equal representation
from the thirty-four (34) zones. Clubs wishing to participate must have been chartered prior to 30
June 2009.
The deadline for a pilot application is 1 April 2011. Decisions for Club selections will be made by 1
May 2011. Club and District Officers will be notified of selected Clubs by 31 May 2011. To
participate in these Pilot Programmes, your Club must be in good financial standing and you will
need agreement from the current Club President and Club President-elect along with the agreement
of 2/3 of the Club members.
Klerksdorp Rotary Club
Meeting Report – 4 February 2011
By Bulletin Editor
Clifton Piek unfurled the flag and said grace. President Johan reminisced on some great events on
this day in history, related a few important events and also the members’ upcoming birthdays. Of
special interest is the Rota Park social on 5 March at which there will be traditional Boeremusiek and
dances. He then requested Mike Stocken to introduce his guest - Martin Joubert of Nexor Security.
The members were then entertained by a short video clip in which Bill Gates spoke about the worldwide
malaria project in which he has become involved with and also on the value of good teachers in
the upbringing of students.
In preparation for Valentines Day, Sergeant Knut Norman enlightened everyone about the formation
of the elements from which the world and all the universe is shaped. Elements from Hydrogen, the
first element on the Periodic Table, up to Iron, are all formed through normal star activity. All the
other elements after that, including gold, are formed during a supernova, when a star explodes.
Ladies, this means we wear stardust on our fingers!
A chicken pasta and ice cream with chocolate sauce dessert was enjoyed by all. The wine draw was
concluded and Torben Pederson was the winner. President Johan concluded the meeting. Casper
Minnaar did the four way test.
Money-raising efforts for
Rotary Funds
By Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar, Foundation Trustee Chair
The Rotary Foundation is a huge part of the family of Rotary. All of the money raised, whether through Rotary
International or The Rotary Foundation, is channelled through The Rotary Foundation. There are large sums of
money coming every year to the Annual Programs Fund, the Permanent Fund, the Rotary Peace Centers Major
Gifts Initiative and, right now, Rotary’s USD200 Million Challenge.
Even though the money-raising efforts for these four funds are separate, they are all linked together. Annual
giving is the core of our business. The Permanent Fund was geared toward those Rotarians who can afford to
give large sums and as a support to the Annual Programs Fund. The Rotary Peace Centers Major Gifts Initiative
was also launched to approach those Rotarians who can afford to give more than average. Thus it is apparent
how these three fundraising events depend on one another. In addition we have Rotary’s USD200 Million
Challenge, which affects the annual giving, thus also the two other fundraising programs.
It is important that when we give money, we must donate to all of the above initiatives. By remembering this, we
can continue Building Communities — Bridging Continents through Service Above Self.
Fats? Fats? Fats? Yes! Yes! Carbs? Carbs? No!
No!
Contribution by Knut Normann
This article was extracted from a news letter aimed at North
Americans received from ‘housecalls@healthiernews.com’
Forget the low-fat mantra the mainstream has been chanting for generations now,
because the consensus is quietly changing. Now, top researchers from the nation's
leading institutions are singing a new tune, because they're finally recognizing that fat
on the belly isn't caused by fat on the dinner plate but by the sugar and other carbs
hidden inside the staples of the modern American diet.
An eye-popping report in the Los Angeles Times offers a who's who of big names joining
the Carbohydrate Tea Party: Harvard, Duke, Tufts and UC Davis are throwing the sugar
overboard and embracing a common-sense approach that can save millions of lives.
Let's hope it's not too late because the latest research shows that today's teens are
already suffering from the earliest warning signs of sugar overload.
Researchers have found that adolescents who consume the most white stuff already
have the cardiovascular risk factors that once appeared only in middle age or beyond.
These sugar-addicted teens have lower levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol, and higher
levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol and triglycerides.
Naturally, they're also far more likely to be overweight and are even showing signs of
insulin resistance, putting them at risk for diabetes, according to the study in circulation.
The researchers used data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey, and found
that today's teens now eat or drink a quarter pound of sugar every single day -- nearly
double the consumption of children the same age back in the late 1970s.
And if that keeps up, we're facing a dark future, because if there's ever been a single
ingredient responsible for more death and disease than sugar, I haven't seen it.
Eliminating sugar in all its forms, even without following an otherwise strict low-carb
diet, would do more for your overall health than any other single dietary change.
And getting rid of the rest of the bad carbs will positively transform you. But if you don't
want to take my word for it, now you can listen to Harvard:
"If Americans could eliminate sugary beverages, potatoes, white bread, pasta, white rice
and sugary snacks, we would wipe out almost all the problems we have with weight and
diabetes and other metabolic diseases," Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the department
of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, told the Times.
Maybe it's time for the low-carb craze to mount a comeback.
What Tree Did You Fall From?
Find your birthday and its corresponding tree.
By JC Nel
Let us look at the February birthday people and see if it is true:
Feb 09 to Feb 18
CEDAR TREE (the Confidence)
Cedar Tree - of rare beauty, knows how to adapt, likes luxury, of good health,
not in the least shy, tends to look down on others, self-confident,
determined, impatient, likes to impress others, many talents, industrious,
healthy optimism, waiting for the one true love, able to make quick
decisions.
Feb 19 to Feb 28
PINE TREE (the Particular)
Pine Tree - loves agreeable company, very robust, knows how to make life
comfortable, very active, natural, good companion, but seldom friendly, falls
easily in love but its passion burns out quickly, gives up easily, everything
disappointments until it finds its ideal, trustworthy, practical.
