Carbon Paper<br />
The first documented use of the term “carbonated paper” was in 1806, when<br />
Englishman Ralph Wedgwood, patented his “Stylographic <strong>Write</strong>r.” However,<br />
Pellegrino Turri had invented a typewriter in Italy by at least 1808, for which “black<br />
paper” was essential. Both men invented their “carbon paper” as a means to help<br />
blind people write through the use of a machine, and the “black paper” was really<br />
just a substitute for ink. Turri had very personal reasons for developing carbon paper.<br />
He fell in love with the Countess Carolina Fantoni, who had become blind “in the<br />
flower of her youth and beauty”, and Turri resolved to build her a machine that<br />
would enable her to correspond with her friends (including him) in private.<br />

There is considerable debate over what should be included in minutes. Within limits,<br />
organisations may follow whatever rules they choose. Minutes may be as detailed as<br />
a transcription, or as concise as a bare list of the decisions made. Many stakeholders<br />
find a bare list of decisions frustrating, as they want more information about where<br />
individuals stood on particular issues. However, in a large group that deals with<br />
many different issues, it may be very difficult to present a happy middle ground.<br />
Consequently, most organisations go to either extreme, depending primarily on their<br />
notion of privacy and accountability (members may want to know who to blame). In<br />
general, if a question is included, you should also include the responses. Commonly<br />
though, many minute-takers omit this obvious and essential part of the record.<br />
