STATESMEN FALL TO VSU ON CONTROVERSIAL CALL<br />

VALDOSTA, Ga. - In a game defined by sea-saw scoring, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Statesmen</strong> were held on <strong>the</strong> VSU one inch line as time expired, as<br />

Valdosta State claimed a 51-48 vic<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

DSU’s Scott Eyster led <strong>the</strong> <strong>Statesmen</strong> on an 82-yard drive on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

final possession of <strong>the</strong> game. Only <strong>to</strong> be held on three controversial<br />

calls at <strong>the</strong> one-yard line. The first call came on a 50-yard pass<br />

completion <strong>to</strong> Ellis Debrow, who appeared <strong>to</strong> knock over <strong>the</strong> endzome<br />

marker as he went in. The second <strong>and</strong> third calls came on<br />

Steve Davis dives in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> end-zone. Time expired on <strong>the</strong> second<br />

Davis attempt.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> loss DSU falls <strong>to</strong> 3-2; 3-1 in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gulf</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Conference</strong>,<br />

while Valdosta moves <strong>to</strong> 4-1; 4-0 in <strong>the</strong> GSC.<br />

The two teams combined for 1,192 yards of <strong>to</strong>tal offense. The<br />

<strong>Statesmen</strong> gained 674 yards of <strong>the</strong> 1,192. 483 yards were threw <strong>the</strong><br />

air <strong>and</strong> 191 on <strong>the</strong> ground.<br />

<strong>Statesmen</strong> quarterback Eyster threw for 483 yards on 25-of-40<br />

passing with four <strong>to</strong>uchdowns <strong>and</strong> two interceptions. Leading <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Statesmen</strong> in receiving was Chris Parks who had 157 yards on<br />

seven receptions, Ellis Debrow gained 131 yards on five catches<br />

with a <strong>to</strong>uchdown a piece.<br />

Radale Pearson rushed for 101 yards on 21 carries <strong>and</strong> one<br />

<strong>to</strong>uchdown.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first half The <strong>Statesmen</strong> <strong>and</strong> Blazers exchanged <strong>to</strong>uchdown<br />

scores three times in <strong>the</strong> second quarter. DSU’s first score came<br />

from Pearson who scored on a 1-yard run. After Pearson’s score <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Statesmen</strong> <strong>to</strong>ok a 10-6 lead. Delta State scored again on an 18-yard<br />

strike by Snell, increasing <strong>the</strong> <strong>Statesmen</strong> lead <strong>to</strong> 17-6.<br />

Valdosta State answered right-back with two scores of <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

<strong>to</strong> take <strong>the</strong> lead back 20-17. Tyran Robinson scored from 1-yard out,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Vincent Brown scored on a 7-yard run. At <strong>the</strong> 2:39 mark in <strong>the</strong><br />

half DSU’s Eyster connected on a 39-yard pass play <strong>to</strong> Robert Davis,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Statesmen</strong> <strong>to</strong>ok a 24-20 lead. VSU capitalized on a 68-yard<br />

pass play on <strong>the</strong> next drive from Walker <strong>to</strong> Travis Taylor. That gave<br />

Valdosta a 27-24 lead with 1:30 left in <strong>the</strong> half.<br />

Ending <strong>the</strong> first half of action DSU’s kicker Trey Crum capitalized<br />

on a 22-yard filed goal <strong>to</strong> knot <strong>the</strong> score at 27-27 heading in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

locker room.<br />

STATESMEN FALL TO ARKANSAS TECH<br />

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - The <strong>Statesmen</strong> continue <strong>the</strong>ir woes in<br />

Russellville, Ark. On a overcast day, Delta State University fell <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Wonder Boys of Arkansas Tech 35-29 in a game that was<br />

suspenseful until <strong>the</strong> last play. With <strong>the</strong> loss DSU falls <strong>to</strong> (3-3; 3-2 in<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Gulf</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Conference</strong>) while ATU improves <strong>to</strong> (6-0; 5-0 in <strong>the</strong><br />

GSC).<br />

The <strong>Statesmen</strong> raked up 479 yard of <strong>to</strong>tal offense on <strong>the</strong> day.<br />

Scott Eyster on <strong>the</strong> day was 25-of-46 for 316 yards with three<br />

<strong>to</strong>uchdowns <strong>and</strong> two interceptions. Rob Davis had 126 yards<br />

receiving on 10 receptions <strong>and</strong> two <strong>to</strong>uchdowns. Jason Snell rushed<br />

for 87 yards on 24 carries with one <strong>to</strong>uchdown. Leading <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Statesmen</strong> on defense was Pete Golding who had 11 tackles <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

onside kick recovery. Joac Williams recorded six tackles all solo with<br />

a fumble recovery, interception <strong>and</strong> three pass break ups.<br />

Tech broke <strong>the</strong> scoring silence in <strong>the</strong> fourth quarter on a R.J.<br />

Vanhook 53-yard <strong>to</strong>uchdown run <strong>to</strong> give ATU a 28-16 lead at <strong>the</strong> 7:47<br />

mark. On Delta’s next possession DSU’s Eyster was hit as he was<br />

thrown <strong>and</strong> his pass was picked off by Cedric Flemons. Tech scored<br />

again on a Marcus Godfrey 6-yard <strong>to</strong>uchdown carry <strong>to</strong> give <strong>the</strong><br />

Wonder Boys a 35-16 lead with 4:38 left in <strong>the</strong> game. Chad Ridley<br />

broke <strong>the</strong> scoring drought for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Statesmen</strong> on a 50-yard pass<br />

completion on fourth down from Eyster <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong> Tech lead 35-22<br />

with 3:02 on <strong>the</strong> clock. DSU attempted <strong>the</strong> two-point conversion <strong>and</strong><br />

failed. The <strong>Statesmen</strong> scored again on ano<strong>the</strong>r fourth down<br />

conversion off a pass from Eyster <strong>to</strong> Davis with 33 seconds left in<br />

<strong>the</strong> game cutting <strong>the</strong> lead <strong>to</strong> 35-29. DSU <strong>the</strong>n recovered <strong>the</strong> onside<br />

kick with 31 ticks left on <strong>the</strong> clock. Eyster’s desperatiion heave <strong>to</strong><br />

Mike Wallace was batted down at <strong>the</strong> 1-yard line as time expired on<br />

<strong>the</strong> clock.<br />

On Delta State’s next possession Trey Crum missed a 28-yard<br />

field goal with 7:39 on <strong>the</strong> clock in <strong>the</strong> third quarter. The next two<br />

possessions by each team ended in a punt. In <strong>the</strong> third quarter of<br />

action, Tech <strong>and</strong> DSU’s defense held strong allowing no scores.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first half of action, Delta State’s Crum converted on a 24-yard<br />

field goal on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Statesmen</strong> first drive of <strong>the</strong> game <strong>to</strong> give DSU a 3-0<br />

lead. The Wonder Boys scored on a 43-yard pass from Campbell <strong>to</strong><br />

Michael Crooks <strong>to</strong> give ATU a 7-3 lead with 14:03 left in <strong>the</strong> second<br />

quarter. DSU answered back on a 64-yard drive of <strong>the</strong>ir own that<br />

was capped off by a 5-yard run by Snell at <strong>the</strong> 11:02 mark <strong>to</strong> give <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Statesmen</strong> a 10-7 lead in <strong>the</strong> second quarter.<br />

Tech put a drive <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong>ir own on <strong>the</strong>ir next possession<br />

going 84-yards on seven plays that was capped off by a Josh<br />

Rogers’ 21-yard <strong>to</strong>uchdown reception <strong>to</strong> give <strong>the</strong> Wonder Boys back<br />

<strong>the</strong> lead at 14-10 with 8:21 before halftime.<br />

With 3:24 left before halftime, <strong>Statesmen</strong>’s Davis caught a 6-yard<br />

<strong>to</strong>uchdown pass from Eyster <strong>to</strong> give Delta State a 16-14 lead with<br />

4:48 left in <strong>the</strong> half. The PAT by Crum was blocked. The Wonder<br />

Boys’ Rogers caught his second <strong>to</strong>uchdown of <strong>the</strong> game with a 2yard<br />

strike from Campbell <strong>to</strong> give ATU a 21-16 at halftime.<br />
