Ron Roberts enters his first season as Defensive<br />

Coordina<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Statesmen</strong> defense. Prior <strong>to</strong> joining <strong>the</strong> DSU<br />

staff, Roberts served one season as head coach at Mount<br />

Whitney HS in Visalia, Calif. <strong>and</strong> 2003 season as defensive<br />

coordina<strong>to</strong>r at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.<br />

While at TSU, Roberts <strong>to</strong>ok over a defense ranked near <strong>the</strong><br />

bot<strong>to</strong>m in <strong>the</strong>ir conference. Within a year <strong>the</strong> seasoned DC<br />

improved TSU’s defense in virtually every statistical category<br />

<strong>and</strong> Texas State placed two defenders on <strong>the</strong> All-<strong>South</strong>l<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Conference</strong> Defensive Team.<br />

Before his journey <strong>to</strong> Texas State, Roberts spent five<br />

seasons as assistant head coach <strong>and</strong> defensive coordina<strong>to</strong>r at<br />

Tusculum College. During his tenure at <strong>the</strong> Greenville, Tenn.<br />

school, <strong>the</strong> Pioneers posted one of <strong>the</strong> most memorable runs<br />

in TC football his<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

In 2002, Roberts guided a defense that ranked No. 1 in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>South</strong> Atlantic <strong>Conference</strong> in yards (273) allowed per game<br />

<strong>and</strong> in points per game (15). That year <strong>the</strong> Pioneers posted a<br />

school record 31 turnovers for a +7 margin.<br />

Roberts’ defenses are no stranger <strong>to</strong> successes in <strong>the</strong><br />

NCAA statistics. Virtually every defense <strong>the</strong> Visalia, Calif.<br />

native drew up at TC was ranked somewhere in <strong>the</strong> NCAA<br />

defensive statistics.<br />

At Tusculum College Roberts coached 11 All-<strong>South</strong> Atlantic<br />

<strong>Conference</strong> defensive selections <strong>and</strong> Ricardo Colclough, a<br />

second round NFL pick in 2004.<br />

Prior <strong>to</strong> joining <strong>the</strong> Tusculum staff, Roberts served as an<br />

assistant coach at Greensboro College in 1998 <strong>and</strong> was<br />

head coach at Burroughs High School (1994-96) in<br />

California. While at Burroughs, Roberts guided BHS <strong>to</strong> its first<br />

playoff game in 15 years <strong>and</strong> followed that up with ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

post-season trip <strong>the</strong> following year.<br />

Roberts was a two-time All-<strong>Conference</strong> selection at<br />

linebacker at <strong>the</strong> College of Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. He<br />

transferred <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> University of Tennessee at Martin, where he<br />

helped guide <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1988 <strong>Gulf</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Conference</strong><br />

Championship. He graduated from UT-Martin with a degree in<br />

Sociology <strong>and</strong> later earned his Master’s degree from <strong>the</strong><br />

University of Memphis in 1992.<br />

He <strong>and</strong> his wife, Didi, are <strong>the</strong> parents of three children;<br />

Reed, Reilly, <strong>and</strong> Ryan.<br />
