Mike Bloomgren enters his first season as an assistant
coach at Delta State University. No stranger to high-powered
offenses, Bloomgren will serve as the architect of the Delta
State attack while coaching the offensive line.
The Tallahassee, Fla. native comes to DSU after a highly
successful stint (2002-2004) as the co-offensive coordinator at
Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. While at CC, the Indians
claimed the South Athletic Conference title in 2003 and made a
trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2002 and 2004.
With Bloomgren on-board, the Indians averaged 36.6 points
and 420.5 yards per game in 2004. His blocking schemes
were also known for their effectiveness, as the Indians allowed
only 11 sacks in 404 pass attempts. His offenses averaged
4.7 yards per rush and converted on 48 percent of their third
down conversions. Bloomgren coached two-time All-American
and All-SAC offensive tackle Daniel Lynch, All-American Cole
Beane and All-SAC Bucky Yates in 2004. Lynch and Beane
also particpated in the Cactus Bowl.
Prior to his stint at Catawba, Bloomgren spent three
seasons as a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama.
In 1999 and 2000, Bloomgren worked as the defensive
graduate assistant for head coach Mike Dubose. He primarily
worked with the defensive line and helped in video scouting.
During the 1999 season Alabama claimed the Southeastern
Conference Championship. In 2001, Bloomgren had the
opportunity to move to the offensive side of the ball and work
with the offensive line under Dennis Franchione. He was
responsible for coaching the deep snappers and helped with the
scout team defense. While at Alabama, Bloomgren worked with
Freshmen All-Amercans Wesley Britt and Justin Smiley.
Before moving to Tuscaloosa, Bloomgren spent two years as
an undergraduate assistant on Bobby Bowden’s staff at Florida
State University. Bloomgren worked with the Seminole
linebacking corp while maintaining a 3.7 GPA in Sports
Management. During his tenure, FSU claimed two Atlantic
Coast Conference titles.
Bloomgren graduated from Florida State University magna
cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports
Management in 1999. He received a Master’s degree in
Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama
in 2001. He has been a long-time supporter and
member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The Florida High grad played at Culver-Stockton College in
Missouri, where he started as a freshman at tight end.
Bloomgren transferred to Florida State and a coaching career
was born.
Bloomgren was married to the former Lara Parr on June 23,
2001. Lara is a marketing specialist for Sta-Home Health
Care and the couple reside in Cleveland with their dog, Dexler.
