1. LITHOPS AUCAMPIAE<br />

<strong>Lithops</strong> <strong>Au</strong>campiae. (Plates 1, 2.) Growths solitary, in pairs or many in a<br />

clump, turbiniform; the sides of the body coloured a reddish or light brown;<br />

top of leaves flat; window consisting of a large number of parts, of irregular<br />

shape and size, sometimes narrowed down to transparent or semitranspar<br />

ent lines confluent with one another; in the irregularly shaped window a<br />

large number of irregularly shaped islands, which divide the window into<br />

various small parts, or the window is large and open, olive green with so to<br />

say no islands and with a distinct brown border, the latter coloured slightly<br />

red; these islands raised slightly above the level of the window and coloured<br />

reddish brown, giving the whole upper surface a slightly rugose appearance;<br />

the margins of the window of the same colour; the outer margin of the<br />

window with islands, provided with a number of prominent, dendritic light<br />

olive green, semi transparent lines; that of the open window laciniated, the<br />

borders of the lines or laciniae coloured slightly red. Flowers yellow.<br />

This is a very variable species. In the same locality two distinct types<br />

figure 14 . lithops aucampiae l. bol.<br />
