The rust brown colour of the top of the leaves, with the many trans<br />

parent windows raised above the surface, is the distinctive feature of this<br />

species, and distinguishes it from all other <strong>Lithops</strong> species.<br />

<strong>Lithops</strong> Fulviceps. (Plaat 14, 14a.) Planteliggaam enkel of 2 4 in ’n klomp;<br />

boon ste vlak byna gelyk of effens konveks: mantel pers met ’n effens rooi<br />

tint, kleur van boonste vlak varieer van ’n ligte bruin (roeskleur) tot ’n vuil<br />

rooi roesbruin; die boonste vlak met baie, tamelike groot ronde donkergroen<br />

deursigtige, waterige vensters (miniatuurvensters), vat effens in die nat toestand<br />

bokant die oppervlakte van die venster uitstaan; tussen die miniatuurvensters<br />

’n paar byna onsigbare tengerige donkerrooi of oranjerooi onreëlmatige lyne<br />

of punte, vat gewoonlik in die effens vlakke duike van die oppervlakte lê,<br />

sodat die oppervlakte gewoonlik puisieagtig gerimpeld voel. Geen some nie.<br />

Die roesbruin boonste vlak met die groot getal deursigtige uitstaande<br />

miniatuurvensters, wat soos druppels water lyk is die kenmerk, wat hierdie<br />

soort van alle ander soorte <strong>Lithops</strong> onderskei. (Fig. 39, 40).<br />

✱<strong>Lithops</strong> Fulviceps. Growths solitary or in a clump 2–4, up to 1 in. high,<br />

1 1 – 4 in. broad and 1 in. thick, nearly flat or slightly convex at the top, which<br />

varies from bright fulvous to dingy pinkish rust colour, thickly sprinkled with<br />

rather large, round, dark green dots, which are usually slightly raised, but<br />

sometimes almost even with the surface, and scattered among the dots are<br />

few or several inconspicuous slender orange red irregular lines or dots, usually<br />

placed in slight depressions of the surface so that the latter is usually very<br />

slightly tuberculate rugulose to the touch. Calyx 4–6 lobed; lobes 2 1 – 2 –5 lines<br />

long, 1 1 – 2 –3 lines broad, linear oblong, obtuse, brownish or brownish fulvous,<br />

sometimes tinted with pale violaceous, dotted. Corolla 10 14 lines in diam<br />

eter, expanding between 3 and 4 p.m. (Greenwich time) and closing at night,<br />

lasting about a week, odourless; petals 40–45 in about 2 series, 4–5 lines long,<br />

and less than 1 line broad, linear, subacute, the inner bright yellow on both<br />

sides, the other whitish with a faint pink tinge on the back, with the tips<br />

often becoming more or less red on both sides. Stamens about 3 lines long;<br />

filaments deep yellow or ochreous fading to pale yellow at the base; anthers<br />

yellow. Style short, up to 1 line long, stigmas 4 6, about 3 lines long, slightly<br />

exceeding the stamens, filiform, rich ochreous yellow.<br />
