8. Immigrant candidates<br />

An immigrant candidate is:<br />

(a) A child or a dependent of a diplomatic representative of a Foreign Government accredited in South<br />

Africa or a person who first enrolled at and entered a South African school in Grade 7 or a more<br />

senior grade.<br />

(b) A learner who began his or her schooling at a school in South Africa and has attended school<br />

outside South Africa for two or more consecutive years after Grade 6 or its equivalent.<br />

(c) An immigrant candidate as contemplated above may offer only one official language on at least First<br />

Additional Language Level and obtain a rating of 30% in that language, provided that:<br />

Another subject from Group B is offered in lieu of the one official language that is not offered;<br />

The immigrant candidate complies with the promotion requirements as stipulated in paragraph<br />

33(1)(a) of the policy document.<br />

To be classified as an immigrant candidate, such a candidate must be in possession of:<br />

(a) The relevant official documents issued by the Department of Home Affairs; and<br />

(b) the relevant official documents issued by the school where the candidate entered the South African<br />

school system for the first time.<br />

9. Admission requirements to higher education<br />

9.1. Categories of NSC subjects in terms of which the admission requirements are stated<br />

(a) Recognised 20-credit subjects<br />

All the subjects in the National Curriculum Statement for Gr 10 – 12 are recognised 20credit<br />

subjects, except for Life Orientation which is a 10-credit subject.<br />

(b) Designated subjects<br />

Most of the subjects in the NCS for Grades 10 – 12 are designated subjects for university<br />

admission purposes. These subjects are indicated on the registration form.<br />

9.2. Minimum requirements for admission<br />

(a) Minimum requirements for certificate stu<strong>die</strong>s at universities<br />

− A National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by UMALUSI<br />

− Minimum 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education<br />

Institution<br />

(b) Requirements for diploma stu<strong>die</strong>s at universities. A NSC as certified by UMALUSI<br />

− Minimum 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education<br />

institution<br />

− 40-49% (Rating of 3) or better in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects<br />
