3. Grade 10 and 11 requirements<br />

Candidates must have complied with the internal assessment requirements for Grades 10 and 11 in order<br />

to register for the Grade 12 assessment programme and must be able to submit proof to this effect.<br />

4. Repeat Candidates<br />

A candidate who did not comply with all the requirements for the NSC as full-time candidate and enters<br />

for a subsequent examination other than a supplementary examination in order to fulfil the outstanding<br />

requirements will for all purposes be regarded as a repeat candidate.<br />

A repeat candidate may enter for any number of subjects that were resulted in a previous exam cycle.<br />

The candidate will have the option of re-doing the SBA of the subject(s), or to retain the previous SBA<br />

mark, SBAs from previous years are valid for 5 years. The candidate’s decision must be clearly<br />

indicated on the registration form.<br />

A repeat candidate who has already obtained the NSC may enter for a maximum of two (2) subjects not<br />

previously offered. In this case the candidate must comply with all the internal assessment<br />

requirements for the subject(s) in Grades 10 and 11.<br />

Candidates who repeat one or more subjects will be allowed to combine their results based on the<br />

current National Senior Certificate requirements to obtain a National Senior Certificate, if the combined<br />

results change the status of the certificate, for example, from Diploma to Bachelors, from fail to Higher<br />

Certificate etc.<br />

5. Programme and promotion requirements<br />

In order to obtain the National Senior Certificate the candidate must offer seven subjects as follows:<br />

An official Language on Home Language Level<br />

An official Language on at 1st Additional Language Level<br />

Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy<br />

Life Orientation<br />

Three other subjects with the following provisos:<br />

Not more than one language from the same group (isiXhosa, isiZulu, SiSwati and isiNdebele<br />

form one group and Sepedi, Sesotho and Setswana the other)<br />

The same language may not be offered at more than one level<br />

Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy may not be offered together<br />

Computer Applications Technology and Information Technology may not be offered together<br />

Note: The two subjects can from <strong>2013</strong> onwards be taken together by Gr 10 learners which,<br />

means that from 2015 onwards Gr 12 candidates will be able to register for both.<br />

Consumer Stu<strong>die</strong>s and Hospitality Stu<strong>die</strong>s may not be offered together<br />

One subject developed and assessed by a body other than the Department of Basic Education<br />

may be offered as one of the three subjects.<br />

A learner may offer more than the required 7 subjects on condition that the additional subject(s) was<br />

(were) offered for all three years (Gr 10-12) and all the internal assessment requirements for the<br />

subject(s) were met. Applications in this regard have to be submitted to SACAI accompanied by the<br />

relevant evidence for approval.<br />
