Common Questions
Why is it necessary to use environments rather than just libraries?
Environments and User Capabilities
Two reasons are: Implementer only allows promotion into an environment to ensure positive
tracking of all members/objects at each step of the development process, and, environments
are an organizational aid for libraries and members/objects. Because environments are
usually set up by application, it allows strict organization of all objects within the libraries.
Environments automate many manual tasks, a primary advantage for the developer.
What are the most common user errors that occur during environment setup?
The necessary libraries are not included in the environment definition, and an incorrect
library compilation order (compile library list).
Environments and User Capabilities
An environment has user capability flags that allow you to control the authority each user
has to the environment for check out and promotion, as well as the authority to lock activities
related to concurrent development and lock maintenance. This task allows you to grant each
user specific rights that reflect the development activities the user is allowed to perform to an
environment. This task is necessary for each user enrolled in Implementer for each
environment they need to work in.
The default rights you define in Implementer restrict rather than enable free access to the
functions in Implementer. Thus, it is necessary to establish user authorities in two functional
areas:
Work with Users for basic authorities
Work with Environments User Capabilities or Work with User - Environment
Capabilities for environment-specific capabilities
When initially setting up or changing environments, you can establish user capabilities while
working with the environment—for this purpose, access the Change User Environment
Capabilities panel through Work with Environments as described in the following task.
When setting up or changing user profiles, access the panel from Work with Users. To set up
required default libraries, environments, projects, or other user defaults, see “Users” on
page 72.
To assign user capabilities for an environment
1 From the Implementer Menu, type option 42 or type STRIM (*WRKENV) at the
command line and press ENTER. The Work with Environments panel displays.
2 Select the environment with option 15=User capabilities and press ENTER. The Work
with User Capabilities panel displays for the selected environment.
