B.S. <strong>Recreation</strong> <strong>Management</strong><br />

With a four-year degree in <strong>Recreation</strong> <strong>Management</strong>,<br />

you can work in a wide variety of private and<br />

public recreation settings including parks, health<br />

clubs, retirement communities, convention &<br />

sports centers and more depending upon the track<br />

you select. In addition, the program provides an<br />

excellent foundation for entrance into graduate<br />

school.<br />

Fitness <strong>Management</strong> Track<br />

This track prepares you for a career in university<br />

strength and conditioning programs/athletics,<br />

corporate fitness centers, hospital wellness centers,<br />

health/wellness clubs, and personal training.<br />

Graduates are qualified to do fitness assessments;<br />

design and prescribe exercise programs; teach<br />

aerobics; and be personal trainers, group exercise<br />

leaders and strength and conditioning coaches.<br />

The program prepares graduates for certification by<br />

several national organizations.<br />

Therapeutic Track<br />

If you are interested in working with people with<br />

disabilities, youth at risk or older adults, you may<br />

choose to follow the Therapeutic <strong>Recreation</strong> track. This<br />

track is designed to prepare you to work in a variety<br />

of settings. The course work meets the requirements<br />

for the NCTRC (National Council for Therapeutic<br />

<strong>Recreation</strong> Certification) exam.<br />

Outdoor Track<br />

If you like the outdoors, this track will prepare you for<br />

a career in recreation planning and environmental<br />

interpretation and as a park ranger, state or national<br />

park manager, outdoor/environmental educator, camp<br />

director, or outdoor leader. A program of natural science,<br />

programming theory and resource management skills<br />

ensures that graduates are able to understand, use and<br />

preserve our nation’s natural resources.<br />

Community/Commercial Track<br />

You will be taught to plan and promote recreation programs<br />

with an emphasis on leadership, marketing and business<br />

skills to prepare for a career in:<br />

• <strong>University</strong>/college recreation programs<br />

• Sport facility management<br />

• YMCA/YWCA/Boys and Girls Clubs<br />

• Community recreation centers<br />

• Retirement communities<br />

• Senior centers<br />

• Special events planning<br />

• Conference centers<br />

Internships<br />

In two required internships, you will get hands-on<br />

experience in real life situations which will be invaluable<br />

for future employment or entrance into graduate school.<br />

The first internship is five weeks and a minimum of<br />

120 hours, providing insight into the field of recreation.<br />

The second internship during your senior year is a<br />

full semester with a minimum of 400 to 480 hours,<br />

providing professional field experience.<br />

Study Abroad<br />

Through the <strong>Lock</strong> <strong>Haven</strong> <strong>University</strong> Study Abroad<br />

Program, you may choose to complete part of your<br />

college education at one of our partner universities<br />

in countries such as England, Australia, Japan,<br />

Ireland, Scotland and Mexico. You may also choose<br />

to participate in faculty-led short-term or summer<br />

international learning experiences.<br />

Community Service<br />

As part of the “learning through community<br />

involvement” philosophy of LHU, you will complete 50<br />

hours of community service. This may include helping<br />

with trail maintenance or river clean up, working with<br />

a community organization or helping in the creation<br />

and delivery of recreation programs. Our students<br />

consistently remark that the hours spent volunteering<br />

provide valuable learning experiences.<br />

Graduate School<br />

Many of our graduates have continued their<br />

studies toward advanced degrees. Some of<br />

the schools our recent graduates have been<br />

accepted to include: Penn State, Clemson,<br />

Marywood, Slippery Rock, East Stroudsburg<br />

and Michigan State.<br />

Our Facilities<br />

There is an abundance of modern equipment throughout the LHU<br />

campus including the Rec Center with climbing wall, state-of-theart<br />

exercise equipment, cardio room, weights and more. Rogers<br />

Gym has a renovated weight room and there is a high- and low-<br />

rope challenge course along the edge of campus. Classrooms are<br />

equipped with SmartBoards for easy integration of the Internet and<br />

PowerPoint into class work. The Mackeyville Environmental Center<br />

and the Pennsylvania Wilds Program provide unique opportunities<br />

for off-campus learning experiences.<br />
