Calcareous—containing calcium carbonate<br />

Caldera⎯a type of volcanic crater that is extremely large (over one mile in diameter), usually <strong>for</strong>med by<br />

<strong>the</strong> collapse of a volcanic cone or by a violent volcanic explosion<br />

Calf—a young animal dependent on its mo<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Callosity—a patch of thickened, keratinized tissue on <strong>the</strong> head of a right whale, inhabited by large<br />

numbers of whale lice<br />

Calving—<strong>the</strong> process of giving birth by a whale, dolphin, porpoise, or manatee<br />

Calving interval—<strong>the</strong> period of time from one birth to <strong>the</strong> next, generally applicable to cetaceans<br />

Cape—a darker region on <strong>the</strong> back of many species of dolphins and small whales, generally with a<br />

distinct margin<br />

Carapace—<strong>the</strong> outer covering of <strong>the</strong> back of a sea turtle, which is bony <strong>for</strong> all sea turtle species with <strong>the</strong><br />

Circumtropical—organisms which occur around <strong>the</strong> tropics of <strong>the</strong> world (land or sea)<br />

Click—a broad-frequency sound used by too<strong>the</strong>d whales <strong>for</strong> echolocation and which may serve a<br />

communicative function; usually with peak energy between 10 kHz and 200 kHz<br />
