Currently, Guam employs a longline exclusion zone within 50 NM of <strong>the</strong> island. There<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> purse seine<br />

and longline fisheries occur outside of <strong>the</strong> EEZ. The recreational trolling fishery is <strong>the</strong> most commonly<br />

practiced fishery within <strong>the</strong> EEZ around Guam. There has been a steady increase in <strong>the</strong> number of boats<br />

participating in Guam’s pelagic fishery from 1981 (109 boats) through 1998 (469 boats). These numbers<br />

have decreased slightly from 1998 to <strong>the</strong> present (WPRFMC 2004c). The boats associated with this<br />

fishery are less than 10 m in length and are typically owner-operated by people earning a living by means<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r than fishing (WPRFMC 2004c).<br />
