The last rule apparently negates the form marked above with a double star<br />

and thus forms: [brāhmaṇā dadāti]. The general rule (of Pāṇini ?), i.e.<br />

insertion of -y-, however, has not been followed even in the text of Pān.'s<br />

grammar. The reason is that Pāṇ. teaches the usual, class. form of Abhinihita<br />

Sandhi (-e/o '- ), at 6.1.109 sqq.; this rule applies to Saṃhitā texts (6.1.72). 237<br />

The rules in 8.3.17 sqq. therefore seem to have been entered only to record<br />

the variant pronunciation of some teachers.<br />

It is interesting to note that all of the authorities quoted here are either<br />

Eastern or Central. Gārgya (cf. Gārgī at BAU) is a name the origin of which<br />

is to be searched with more probability in the Centre than in the East (cf.<br />

author, Fs. W.Rau: The case of the shattered head). Śākalya is, by the time<br />
