The revenue from finals is a big contributor to ensuring that 

each year we minimise what clubs pay to the league to run the 

competition each year. But certainly there are costs that 

continue to grow and this year our budget that includes the

season. Each week during the finals series we will keep you up to date with all the latest finals information, and take a look 

ahead to the following weeks finals action.

Again this year we’ll again adopt an approach where your 

admittance will allow entry for the full day at that particular 

venue. Each venue has its own admission fee so if you 

choose to move between venues you’ll need to pay a second

NO PARKING AT BAYSWATER OVAL 

Bayswater Oval will again be a CAR FREE ZONE during the 

division one finals series, and the EFL has once again 

arranged extra car parking in the local area for those people 

still wanting to drive to the finals. There will be over 1,000 

car parks available in the industrial site directly opposite the 

entrance to Bayswater Oval. Cars can enter off Bayswater Rd, 

with gates opening at 7:30am Saturday morning and will 

close at 6:30pm Saturday night. There will be a $2 cost for 

parking. People using this car park during the finals are 

advised to use the pedestrian crossings at both the corner of 

Bayswater rd and Mountain Hwy, as well as the lights out the 

front of the BP service station. There will be disabled 

parking spaces available within the ground and these will be 

provided on a first come first served basis. Once these spaces 

have been taken, no additional cars will be permitted to enter 

the venue. There will also be temporary stands available for 

seating, and people are advised they can bring along chairs to 

sit on. 

ALCOHOL AT FINALS VENUES 

Revenue from sales of food and alcohol goes to host clubs 

and helps them cover the license fees that they pay for the 

right to host finals. In the case of alcohol purchases, 75c from 

every can sold is pooled and distributed amongst EFL clubs. 

It’s a way for those clubs without venues suitable for finals 

can share in the profits from the day

FALCONS ROLL INTO GRAND FINAL 

The Oxford Dictionary describes a juggernaut as “an 

overwhelming, advancing force that crushes or seems to crush 

everything in its path”. Similarly, the dictionary of the Eastern 

Football League suggests that a juggernaut is a team that 

builds up momentum during the home-and-away season, and 

readies themselves to unleash an all-out assault on the 

premiership come finals time. For many weeks now, the Knox 

Football Club has been referred to as the juggernaut of 

Division Two, and last Saturday at East Burwood Reserve, the 

Falcons lived up to that title, leading from the first minute of 

last Saturday’s Second Semi Final to crush South Croydon and 

move into the 2007 Division Two Grand Final, as SHAUN 

KELLY reports. 

The Patterson Cheney EFL Finals Series couldn’t have started 

any better for Knox had coach Stuart Wynd been the 

scriptwriter. Within the first minute of last Saturday’s Second 

Semi Final, Knox centre half-forward Alex Bakens launched a 

missile from the point of the 50 metre arc to open the scoring 

for the day. Knox looked extremely potent early on, with two 

of Division Two’s top five goalkickers in Wynd and Adam 

Slater sharing the Falcons’ goalsquare, but early on the ball 

didn’t get the chance to get down to Knox’s two towers. 

Bakens was designated as the Falcons’ go-to man early on at 

centre half-forward, and he revelled in the responsibility, 

kicking three opening-quarter goals before South Croydon 

knew what had hit them. It took seventeen minutes for South 

Croydon to register their first goal, with forward Nick 

McConnell breaking the drought. When Daniel King kicked a 

nice running goal to bring the margin back to within eight 

points, the mass of South Croydon fans present gave an 

almighty roar, however their enjoyment was short-lived as 

Knox worked the ball forward from the ensuing centre 

clearance to where Slater resided up forward. With the ball 

hitting the deck before the big man could latch onto it, Slater 

used his ample frame beautifully to allow himself to tap the 

ball onto the waiting Bakens, who’s measured checkside punt 

sailed through the goals to wrestle back the ascendancy for the 

Falcons. When Lucas Bakes slipped into the “hot spot” up 

forward to mark a precision pass by team-mate Paul Tredrea 

and kick Knox’s sixth goal, signs were starting to look 

ominous for South Croydon, although they entered the quartertime 

break just fourteen points in arrears after star centre halfforward 

Lucas Murphy goaled close to the quarter time siren. 

South Croydon coach Paris Harvie was ropeable at quartertime, 

and with fair cause. After wowing the footballing public 

to rise from playing Division Three football in 2006 to their 

standing as one of the top two teams in Division Two in 2007 

on the back of an exciting brand of running football, the 

Doggies had seemingly regressed during that opening quarter, 

with Harvie lamenting the ease at which the Knox players 

gained possessions in the opening stanza. The Doggies came 

out of their quarter-time huddle with their ears undoubtedly 

ringing, but thirty minutes later, it was their pride that was 

hurting as well. 

Where Knox took the honours in the first quarter, they 

positively dominated the second. The football spent the vast 

majority of the quarter in the Knox forward line, with the 

number of South Croydon forward entries in the second 

quarter being able to be counted on one hand. With Brendan 

Williams and Paul Tredrea running amok across the wings and 

Tyson Collins working hard in the Knox engine room, the 

Falcons booted the only five goals of the second quarter to 

seemingly have the game well and truly in their grasp as they 

walked from the field at half-time, with three of those goals 

coming in a two-minute stretch in the shadows of the half-time 

siren. The third of this trio, and Knox’s fifth of the quarter, 

was arguably the highlight of the day, as the showman 

emerged in Adam Slater and he latched onto a loose ball 

caused by a brilliant Collins smother, kicking the ball over his 

head and through for a memorable goal to give the Falcons a 

seemingly impenetrable 49 point lead at the long break. 

With the game seemingly in Knox’s grasp after half-time, it 

was pleasing to see South Croydon emerge from the half-time 

break with renewed zest, despite trailing by a long way. And 

whilst Slater kicked his third goal of the day inside the opening 

two minutes of the quarter – a straight-forward set shot from 

thirty metres out after a pinpoint pass by Tredrea – South 

Croydon rallied to boot four of the next five goals to start to 

restore some respectability to the scoreboard. Nic Molnar led 

the charge for South Croydon, gaining plenty of possessions 

and setting up countless scoring thrusts, Lucas Murphy made 

an impact upon his return to the field following his yellow card 

convalescence, and runners Ben Osborne, Daniel King and 

Brett Buttfield all booted goals to provide that forward spark 

that the Doggies were lacking. The Falcons stayed right with 

the Doggies though, and when Wynd booted his second goal 

of the day just before the three quarter-time siren, the Falcon 

lead was still out at 46 points come the final change. 

Although Knox could sense the inevitable at three quartertime, 

coach Wynd wanted his troops to play the game out, and 

leave a lasting impression on the Doggies psyche should the 

two teams have to face off in later weeks. Knox did just that 

by booting the opening three goals of the quarter inside the 

first five minutes, and completely snuffing out any hopes 

South Croydon had of a last-quarter comeback. The Doggies 

got a late goal back through Michael King, his first of the day 

after being blanketed by Knox defender Chris Keech, but it 

mattered little in the context of the game, as the siren sounded 

soon after with Knox sixty-four point winners. Knox earned 

the passage straight through to the Division Two Grand Final 

next Saturday week at East Burwood Reserve. The only 

concern on a great day for Knox was a knee injury suffered to 

Ray Wright, who will be in some doubt for the Grand Final 

despite the Falcons having next week off. South Croydon, on 

the other hand, will be thankful for the double chance after an 

uncharacteristic “off day”, and now take on Doncaster in a cutthroat 

Preliminary Final for the right to gain another crack at 

Knox in the Grand Final.

DIVISION 1 

NOBLE EFFORT BY BULLS 

Noble Park should have its rival Division 1 flag contenders 

looking nervously over their shoulders, after a 25-point win 

over East Ringwood in last Saturday’s qualifying final. 

Bayswater Oval provided the perfect setting for the 

Bulls to enhance their premiership prospects – and 

they delivered, with a clinical 18.14 (122) to 14.13 

(97) victory as LUKE D’ANELLO reports. 

Noble Park trailed by four points at the final change and 

looked out of puff. But, a seven-goal final term, on the back 

of an inspirational four-quarter performance from former 

Hawk Kris Barlow, saw the Bulls claim a deserved win. 

“I suppose we were lucky enough, at the end of the day, to win 

a bit of the footy in the last 10 or 20 minutes of the last quarter 

and that’s what got us on top,” Noble Park coach Shane 

Burgmann said. 

“It came down to the last five minutes of the game, but we 

didn’t lose sight of it (the win) in the third quarter when (East 

Ringwood) came back and got on top. 

“We just put our heads down in the last quarter and went on 

with the job.” 

Noble Park was nothing if not systematic in the way it 

nullified the Roos’ strengths. East Ringwood’s normally freescoring 

forward line was not let off the leash at any stage by 

a disciplined Bulls’ defensive unit. Ziggie Alwan and Lloyd 

Williams were superb and, on countless occasions, they setup 

vital forward 50m entries for their team. 

“It was just really good to see them step up at crunch times,” 

Burgmann said of the pair. 

Noble Park’s midfield also deserves a tick, with the 

diminutive Craig Anderson, the chief destroyer in his team’s 

final term avalanche, leading the way. Chad Davis and Craig 

Folino tried hard for East Ringwood in the middle, but, in the 

end, they were outnumbered by the Bulls. 

In these two areas, the Bulls won the day and, more 

importantly, the match. 

Then there was Barlow, who kicked three majors and 

provided a headache for the Roos all afternoon. Barlow’s 

ability to find space and provide a presence highlighted his 

best-on-ground performance. East Ringwood had no answers. 

Noble Park’s form has been to such a standard that, at the start 

of Saturday’s final, its leading forward, Aaron Cole, was 

sitting on the bench. 

The Bulls led by 16 points at quarter-time, but, by halftime, 

their advantage had been shredded to five points. 

Brendan Holowiuk (3.5) and Wade Porter were providing 

East Ringwood’s scoring-power, while Daniel Sheers was 

dominant in defence. 

Porter, like Barlow, was threatening to take the game 

away from his opposition. With Davis and Nick 

Gieschen also pushing the ball forward consistently, 

and delivering it with precision, the Roos appeared to 

be on top. 

Robbie Ferraro and Cole also spent extended time on the 

bench during the second term, which left the Bulls without 

two of their linchpins. A four-goal-to-two third term followed 

and the Roos, suddenly, held the lead for the first time in a 

match befitting of a final. 

Luke McCormick ignited his team’s charge off half-back, 

while Josh Moore was the driving-force behind his team’s 

sequence of centre clearances. 

Noble’s quarter was punctuated by a number of straightforward 

misses in front of goal (2.6 for the term), while a 

number of its key players were missing in action. But, despite 

the Bulls’ worries, they trailed only narrowly at the final 

change. 

Noble Park’s devastating final term then confirmed it as a 

premiership contender, as it ran the Roos ragged in the final 

half-hour. 

In Matthew Skehan, the Bulls have a genuine ruckman, who 

also works hard around the ground. It is in this area they were 

exposed in last season’s Grand Final loss to Vermont. That 

hole has now been filled. 

Anderson and Barlow headlined the win, while Daniel 

Norman was super on a wing. 

Cole and young goal-sneak George Angelopoulos both kicked 

three goals in support of Barlow. 

East Ringwood, meanwhile, has a demanding task in front of 

it to lift this year’s premiership cup – having to win three 

consecutive cut-throat finals – and will contest a first semifinal 

against Balwyn at Jubilee Park this Sunday. 

Noble Park will play reigning premier Vermont this Saturday 

at Bayswater Oval, with the winner earning the right to 

advance to the season-decider. Burgmann’s in-form team are 

fit and firing at the right time. 

“It’s all about timing, I think. We’ve just hit a bit of form in 

the second-half of the year, which is really good,” Burgmann 

said. “The competition’s really good and, early-on in the 

season, we weren’t playing four quarters of footy and you 

don’t win footy games that way.”

MICK McGuane thinks any team willing to discount his Balwyn 

outfit from this year’s premiership race might be in for a rude 

awakening. The Tigers, in their debut EFL season, extended their 

Division 1 finals campaign into the second week with a thrilling 

six-point win over Lilydale in last Sunday’s elimination final. 

Balwyn kicked a remarkable 2.10 in the final term, but managed 

to escape with victory, 12.20 (92) to 13.8 (86), at Ringwood’s 

Jubilee Park as LUKE D’ANELLO reports. 

McGuane said his team possesses the required appetite, and 

firepower, to succeed in this year’s finals. “When you get to a 

higher level (AFL), and I was fortunate enough to play at that 

level, you certainly embrace what winning is about and you get 

an appetite for it,” McGuane said. 

“I certainly think our players, at the moment, have got that. 

“Obviously, it was a game we had to win to keep our footy season 

alive, and we understood the importance of it. 

“We were very wasteful late in the game, kicking 2.10, and it 

could have been a seven or eight-goal win (if we had kicked 

straight) I suppose, but it wasn’t.” 

The match was so close that Balwyn’s 12-point halftime 

lead was the biggest lead either side managed for the 

game. But, when the contest was on the line in the 

last quarter, the Tigers’ big names came to the 

fore. 

Ex-Hawk Nick Ries was outstanding in the 

final term and accumulated close to 40 

touches for the match, while Allan Murray, 

Brett Moyle and Daniel Harford were also 

prominent. 

Big-man Brad Smith also shone in the 

final half-hour for the winning 

side, while Craig Decorsey 

gathered some telling

“From an individuals’ point of view, we certainly had a lot of 

players stand up when the game had to be won,” McGuane said. 

McGuane also praised the contribution of Adam Morgan, who 

negated Steve Kenny in the second-half. 

Morgan was moved into defence after halftime when Kenny had 

kicked four goals on Ryan Boyce and was threatening to have a 

field day. Though Kenny finished with six majors, the job of 

McGuane’s Mr Fixit proved valuable. 

Ben Wise, in just his third game this year, shut down Marcus 

Kenny in what, initially, looked to be a mismatch. 

“Obviously, he was conceding strength and height to Marcus 

Kenny, but in the marking contests he was quite good,” McGuane 

said of Wise. 

McGuane said Adam Bester played an unselfish role, as he kept 

Lilydale’s rebounding defender Sean Toohey stationed deep in 

Balwyn’s attacking 50m arc. As a result, the Falcons lacked 

penetration out of their defensive half. 

But, the Tigers often failed to make them pay on the scoresheet 

and missed a number of chances in front of goal, which kept the 

opposition in the game. Though Balwyn were systematic in other 

areas, its goalkicking let it down. 

“You don’t think of that (missed chances), at the time, I don’t 

think,” McGaune said. 

“But, looking back now, you can say it could have cost us (the 

game). 

“We’ve just got to learn to go back through our individual 

routines and take our opportunities. 

“(In the last quarter) a Moyle miss, a Baldwin miss and a 

Harford, on the run, miss, they were all gettable chances from 

three players who, certainly, should get them.” 

But, McGuane was, overall, satisfied with the performance. 

“I was fairly happy, fundamentally, with what we went with and 

how we implemented it,” he said. 

“I thought the players went with (the processes) we spoke about 

for much of the week, so that was pleasing.” 

The Tigers face another sudden-death final this Sunday against 

East Ringwood, with the winner progressing to the preliminary 

final. 

The pair is deadlocked at one win each from their two home-andaway 

clashes this season. 

However, Balwyn lost the most recent match between the two, in 

Round 15, by 19 points.

DIVISION THREE 

DYSON BAKER: After seeing Doncaster East in the second 

semi they have proven that they can beat Boronia, and I 

believe that game took a lot out of Boronia along with the 

preliminary final they will be tired come Grand final time. 

The week off will be a godsend for DONCASTER EAST 

who will be raring to go for a shot a division 2, 2008. 

LUKE D’ANELLO: They always say an even team will get 

the job done but, in a Grand Final, you need matchwinners. In 

my view, Doncaster East have more of them than Boronia 

and, after a string of missed chances to lift the cup over past 

seasons, I’m tipping the Lions to progress to Division 2. The 

second semi-final exposed East’s height advantage over 

Boronia, and it was particularly evident when the Lions 

kicked seven unanswered goals in the third term. The Hawks 

have had a great season, but I can’t see them getting past 

DONCASTER EAST, who will win by 24 points. 

SHAUN KELLY: If their Second Semi Final encounter was 

any indication, then this will be an absolute cracking game. 

Both teams possess immense scoring power, and seem to be 

pretty evenly matched across the ground. Injuries may play a 

part in this one, with clouds over Lions John Blias and Saade 

Daher and Hawks Pat Garrity and Craig McKenzie, and 

Lions coach Cam Gillett set to return from a broken arm to 

shore up the backline. I have been very impressed with both 

of these sides this year, and this is almost a toss of the coin 

job. Doncaster East will be fresh after the week off, but 

Boronia built themselves up a lot of momentum in the 

Preliminary Final last week, and got some key players back 

into form. Tough one to call, as I’ve been more than 

impressed with Donny East this year, but I’ve just got a 

feeling about BORONIA after last weekend, and they should 

narrowly take out the Division Three title this year. 

PAUL HOOPER: Both Doncaster East and Boronia are very 

evenly matched. I expect a tough, uncompromising game of 

football with both sides going hard early. My tip is Doncaster 

East to break their "chokers" tag and finally win a Grand 

Final. Good luck to both sides. DONCASTER EAST by 17 

points. 

NICK JOHNSTONE: DONCASTER EAST by 4 goals, 

too big and they will stretch the Boronia defense but it will be 

a hard fought game. 

ANTHONY STANGUTS: Before the second semi final, I 

thought this would be the grand final matchup, with both 

sides having great seasons. When it comes down to it, I think 

BORONIA will have more options in their forwardline, and 

in a close game, they will win by 9 points. 

VERDICT: Doncaster East 4 / Boronia 2

DIVISION FOUR 

DYSON BAKER: As much as I would love to say 

Heathmont I think that Whitehorse will be far too strong and 

remain undefeated into 2008 when they make their way into 

division 3, in saying that don’t underestimate the heart and 

determination of Heathmont in their two finals they have 

been in hard positions and fought their way out. Don’t rule 

out an upset, but on paper WHITEHORSE for me. 

LUKE D’ANELLO: The Pioneers have been, clearly, the 

best side in Division 4 this season and they are not about to 

let this one slip. Heathmont will provide quality opposition, 

but not enough to halt Whitehorse’s premiership dream. All 

season, the Pioneers have had too many options for any side 

to cover and nothing will change this weekend. After a long 

road of finals defeats, the PIONEERS will, deservedly, head 

to Division 3 with a 41-point win. 

SHAUN KELLY: Fair to say that I didn’t expect to see this 

matchup as little as a month ago, but kudos to Heathmont and 

their running game for getting them to the grand stage in 

today’s Grand Final. They’ll go into this game as firm 

underdogs, as I’m expecting to see a page full of people 

tipping the Pioneers, which makes this an interesting 

prospect. All the pressure is on the Pioneers after their 

undefeated season, but they more than have the cattle to 

withstand such pressure. Paul Fiorenza and Karl Lewicki are 

the X factors for the Pioneers today – both extremely creative 

forwards that can turn a game in a matter of minutes. The 

Pioneers can’t afford to relax, though, as Heathmont will try 

and run them off their legs early in the piece, and in century 

goalkicker Mick Aitken, they have their very own “X” factor 

in the forward who, if he gets going early, is nigh on 

unstoppable. This one will be a lot closer than everyone 

thinks, as the Jets will run with the Pioneers all day, but the 

WHITEHORSE PIONEERS should have too much class 

down the stretch to win the Division Four premiership. 

PAUL HOOPER: The Whitehorse Pioneers are a 

professional, energetic, star-studded side. They are wellcoached 

and do not deviate from their processes. The 

Heathmont Jets are a very fit side with a potent midfield and 

star full-forward. I couldn't pick against a club that has won 

every game this year so will stick with the consistent 

WHITEHORSE PIONEERS by 48 points. 

NICK JOHNSTONE: WHITEHORSE PIONEERS by 

lots. It’s a pity Aitken can’t play down back and kick 15. 

ANTHONY STANGUTS: Like the tipsters above me, an 

undefeated run in the season so far is hard to go past. The 

major difference will be the more avenues to goal that the 

Pioneers have in the forward line, which will break their 

senior premiership drought in the EFL. PIONEERS by 40 

points, and Fiorenza and Aitken to battle for mark of the day!

DIVISION 2 

FAIRYTALE SHARKS WIN FINALS GLORY 

This time twelve months ago, the Doncaster Football Club 

was arguably at its lowest point. Faced with relegation after 

a shocking 2006 season that left them in bottom place on the 

Division Two table, the Sharks could only look on in awe as 

the finals went on without them last year. But the wheels of 

fortune began to turn, and when the non-entry of Heidelberg 

into the EFL for 2007 gave Doncaster a Division Two 

reprieve, the Sharks vowed to make the most of their unlikely 

second chance. 

The 2007 home and away season was a delight for Sharks 

fans, as they tripled their wins from 2006 to force their way 

into third spot at season’s end. But the moment of vindication 

came at the final siren of last Sunday’s Division Two First 

Semi Final, as the Doncaster players walked off East 

Burwood Reserve having not just competed in a finals match, 

but were also victorious as they defeated Mulgrave by 56 

points to set up a Preliminary Final meeting with South 

Croydon this Saturday, as SHAUN KELLY reports. 

The Sharks laid the foundations of their victory with some 

astute coaching moves by coach Rod Mitchell and assistant 

Rod O’Neill to commence play. Usual goalsquare occupants 

Brad Neil and Josh Lumicisi were instead lining up in the 

ruck and on a wing respectively and Best & Fairest winning 

ruckman Greg Jarvis lined up across half-forward. This threw 

the Mulgrave players and coaches early, wrecking their 

match-ups and forcing Lions coach Hayden Stanton to throw 

his starting line-up around to try and re-jig his match-ups. 

Whilst the Lions had the benefit of a three to four goal breeze 

blowing to the residential end of East Burwood Reserve, they 

couldn’t make their early attacking thrusts count, with their 

first three shots at goal all sailing wide. Somewhat rattled by 

Doncaster’s unorthodox starting line-up, Mulgrave were still 

composing themselves when Pat Considine took a great onehanded 

mark deep in the Doncaster forward line some eight 

minutes into the quarter, and calmly went back and slotted the 

opening goal of the game. 

With the first major on the board, and Mulgrave starting to get 

comfortable with their match-ups, Doncaster reverted back to 

their more traditional set-up, with Lumicisi and Neil drifting 

back into the forward line, and Jarvis taking up arms against 

Allan Cleven in the ruck. This forced Mulgrave to again 

shuffle their defenders, and in their haste, they failed to spot 

Doncaster on-baller Adrian Gallace enter the fray off the 

interchange bench, and quietly sneak into a forward pocket. 

Gallace remained un-manned deep in the Doncaster forward 

line for a good two minutes before the inevitable happened, 

and the Sharks worked the ball from a pack situation into 

Gallace’s waiting arms, who ran into an open goal for 

Doncaster’s second of the day. With some confusion amongst 

the Lions as to who exactly was Gallace’s opponent, they 

soon had to find out as Gallace backed up with his second 

goal not a minute later to give Doncaster the ideal start. When 

Brad Neil booted his first goal of the day not long after to give 

Doncaster a twenty-one point lead, and Chris Annakis and 

Sean Byrne seemingly doing as they pleased throughout the 

middle of the ground, it seemed as if a long day was in the 

offing for Mulgrave. Jarrod Fearon-Brown gave the Lions 

faithful some hope by kicking Mulgrave’s first goal late in the 

quarter after the Lions’ first real fluent passage of play, but 

they still trailed the Sharks by eighteen points at quarter time. 

Any hope that the Mulgrave faithful held of getting back into 

the contest was quickly snuffed away, as Considine kicked the 

opening two goals of the quarter for Doncaster to give the 

Sharks an impressive five goal lead at the three minute mark 

of the quarter. From then on, both sides traded the next six 

goals on a goal-for-goal basis, but it was Doncaster who were 

looking far more threatening. Despite wonderkind Chris 

Annakis rolling his ankle in the second quarter, which has put 

him in grave doubt for this week’s Preliminary Final, 

Doncaster were not short of running power with Byrne, Matt 

Carroll and skipper Michael Marganis running rampant 

through the middle of the ground, with Byrne in particular so 

damaging that Stanton was forced to send Marty Fleming 

onto a wing to try and tag Byrne out of the game. Gallace also 

impressed with another two goals to take his match tally to 

four by half-time, and at the long break the Sharks were 

swimming along nicely with a thirty-four advantage on the 

scoreboard. 

The third quarter, in many ways, mirrored the opening stanza, 

as it was all about the Sharks. For the third time, Considine 

opening the quarter with the opening goal, however this time 

it didn’t come until almost the time-on period of the quarter, 

as both backlines were on top early in the piece. Chris Doyle 

and Dane Andonov were starting to come into the game for 

Mulgrave, and Rod Mitchell was doing a sterling job on 

dangerous Mulgrave big man Adam Booth in the Lions 

forward line, with Peter Wood and Matt Schimmelbusch 

enjoying the opportunity to get their running games going. 

Once Considine opened the scoring for the quarter, though, 

the floodgates opened for Doncaster. Not long after, Marcus 

Fry burst through a pack in the Sharks forward line to dribble 

through his first of the day, then when Josh Lumicisi and Ross 

Poulakis both opened their accounts for the day, the 

Doncaster lead was out beyond ten goals. Only a Jake Beard 

major that crossed the goal line just as the siren sounded gave 

Mulgrave fans something to cheer for the quarter, as the Lions 

prepared for their 2007 swansong, entering the last quarter a 

disappointing 55 points in arrears. 

Whilst the Lions, as expected, lifted to boot four goals in the 

final quarter, the Sharks were with them every step of the way, 

and booted four of their own, culminating in a long bomb that 

went through goal-post height of the boot of Adrian Gallace 

deep into the time on period for Gallace’s fifth goal of the day. 

The siren sounded soon after with Doncaster fifty-six point 

victors – just reward for the side that dominated play for the 

majority of the day.

was asked to name a 'Team of the Year', in positions, 

for the division they coach in. They also 

nominated a captain of the team, and 

coach, whose efforts during the home and 

away season stood out as above average. 

Coaches were limited to selecting a maximum of four 

players from their own club, however, there were no 

restrictions on the number of players from any one 

club in the final teams announced. 

The division three and four teams are below, and the 

division two side will be announced on THE 

HUDDLE (Wednesday nights between 

6pm – 7pm of 98.1 Radio Eastern FM). The 

Division One team to be announced at "The 

Main Event", the EFL's grand final week

BALWYN 

Today we find ourselves back at Jubilee Park and needing 

another Sunday special performance to continue our EFL 

journey against East Ringwood. While the ledger against 

the Kangaroos was squared in the home and away rounds, 

but for one quarter of bad footy in Round 15 the story 

could have been different. We are good enough and just 

need to stay switched on for 100 minutes to take the next 

step. Go Tigers. Last week the sun shone on the vast 

expanses of Jubilee Park as we contested our first ever 

EFL final against Lilydale. It was a gritty performance 

from both sides as the lead changed all day, with never 

more than two kicks in it. Balwyn was challenged right to 

the finish but in the end gutsed it out to book a semi final 

berth. Importantly we should have learned some lessons 

about playing the Ringwood ground and will go in 

confident today and with our kicking boots on. Best: Rose, 

Moyle, Billings, Murray, Wise, B Smith, Decorsey.

EAST RINGWOOD 

A mixed bag for the Roos last week with the Reserves 

putting in a great performance to win well and the Seniors, 

after a terrific battle, failing to take hold of the game when 

it was up for grabs. This weekend, the Colts take to the 

finals for the first time against Vermont and the Ressies 

also get a crack at the Eagles in second semi’s. The 

Seniors have a second opportunity in what should be 

another cracking game with Balwyn at Jubilee Park. 

Thanks to all who supported us and enjoyed the Golf Day

LILYDALE 

Last week history was created for the Lilydale Football 

Club – not only was it the first time that both Seniors and 

Reserves played in the Division 1 final series, but we also 

saw the first win. The Reserves team took to the open 

spaces of the Ringwood Oval on a warm and windy day. 

The track was certainly very fast, particularly the centre 

square. It was a terrific team effort, with the load shared 

around everyone in a Lilydale uniform. Our long best 

player’s list was headed by Daniel Porter, Brad Condor 

and Brad Wadsworth. Today our courageous Ressies take 

on Noble to keep their September dream alive. The 

Seniors match was set up to be a good contest, with one 

win each in the regular season. In the final term our boys 

were very brave, but fell agonisingly 6 points short of

what would have been a great victory. Ben Garrington, 

Steve Kenny and Caillin Porter were terrific 4-quarter 

players. Senior coach, Brett Fisher, announced his 

retirement from coaching after the game. Brett will still be 

around the Club, but after 2 great years he will hand over 

the reigns and spend some more time with his young 

family and his business. We thank Brett for a great job and 

wish him well in the future. On the social scene we have a 

big few weeks ahead. On Sunday, September 16 the Vote 

Count at the Club rooms from noon. The first 13 games 

will be counted, with the winners to be announced at 

Presentation Night – which is to be held at the Lilydale 

International on Friday September 28. Make sure you 

organise your tickets from any of the Committee. Then on 

AFL Grand Final Day, Dan Breese will host a Grand Final 

Day at the Club Rooms. Go Dales – let’s support our 

Reserves who will fly the flag for Lilydale in September.

Mixed results last week with wins to the Seniors and Colts 

and a loss to the Reserves, this weekend is crunch time for 

the Reserves and Colts , with loses their seasons are over.

DONCASTER 

Big day for the club last week in our first final for 3 years 

against Mulgrave which resulted in our first Seniors Final 

victory since 1996. The boys played exceptionally well by 

not letting the opposition get into the game with some great 

pressure football. The Speccy’s taken in the second quarter 

by both sides was a highlight, but the 4 quarter effort from 

our boys was the best all year and certainly came at the right 

time. Too hard to single out individuals as it was a great team 

effort, but here goes. Best – Considine, Gallace, Parks & 

Friesy. Good luck again today against South Croydon – same 

effort as last week will be required to get through again. 

Presentation night is on Friday 21st September at the Club 

Rooms $25 – see Dotty. 

KNOX 

Knox going into the 2nd Semi with all 3 sides playing on the 

day was going to be tough for the 3 sides to get up on what 

turned out to be a great day for football. Colts had formidable 

opposition in Wantirna South who showed desperation all 

day and at no time did the game look as though it was in the 

bag. Best Players – Fiore, Higgins, O’Reilly and Durdin. 

Reserves seemed nervous from the outset and never got into 

any rhythm and the game just got harder as it rolled on. They 

will need to be at their best this week to win against 

Mulgrave and set up another chance to play Rowville in the 

big one. Best Players – Sheehy, Clarke and Howard. Seniors 

came out to play and outclassed South Croydon all over the 

ground, to win the right to play in the Grand Final. Only 

disappointing aspect for the day was the loss of Bubba early 

with injury, and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Best 

Players – Bakens, Keech and Quinn. COMING EVENTS *

MULGRAVE 

Congratulations to Nick Hailes who plays his 50th senior 

game with Mulgrave today. Our Seniors remarkable season 

came to an end last week after being soundly beaten by 

Doncaster in the first Semi Final. Unlike the two home and 

away encounters, Doncaster dominated proceedings for the 

four quarters. Our players will learn from the experience and 

work towards having another crack at the finals next year. 

The Reserves took advantage of the 5 goal breeze to set up a 

handy quarter time lead in their Semi Final. Montrose made 

the most of the conditions in the second quarter to be within 

8 pts at the main break. Mulgrave withstood a strong 

challenge in the third quarter to go on and win by 35 pts. Best 

Players: Morton, Waser, Mitchell’s, Clark. It was great to see 

so many Colts players come along to support the senior

SOUTH CROYDON 

Last week's semi final saw us totally outplayed by a more 

committed Knox team who followed instructions to the 

letter. The less said the better, however our defenders were 

under constant pressure all day and did remarkably well 

considering the number of forward 50 entries for Knox. The 

goalkickers were led by Boxhead and Dano with two each, 

whilst the better players were Nick Molnar and Luke 

Allison, followed by Salce, McConnell, Fitzgerald and 

Daniel King. In this week's Prelim final we face a 

Doncaster team who were very determined and committed 

against Mulgrave. We must be totally switched on from the 

start and hopefully we can get back to playing our run on 

style of game to show all supporters just what we are 

capable of. Good luck - Regardless of the outcome today, 

all supporters are encouraged to come back to the 

clubrooms after the game. 

WANTIRNA SOUTH 

The Colts continued improvement was evident in the second 

semi-final last weekend against the more fancied Knox 

Falcons. The boys were very competitive in the 1st quarter 

and except for a lean period in the second quarter when they 

conceded four unanswered goals they matched it with their 

opponents for the remainder of the game. Brent Walker was 

outstanding with 5 goals from the mid field and he was ably 

supported by the likes of Kevin Hoogkamer, skipper Sam 

Purdon with solid support in defence from Damian Murray & 

Tom Wells who lead the defenders in creating many 

opportunities for our forwards. It was an honourable 16 point 

loss but more importantly their effort creates a window of 

opportunity and a realisation that under finals pressures any 

team is vulnerable. This week we take on a confident North 

Ringwood who we must overcome to be part of the main day 

in September. The Club Best & Fairest Count was conducted 

last weekend – congratulations to the winners, Brett 

Hutchinson (Seniors), Patrick Lee (Reserves) and Brent 

Walker (Colts). Special mention to Brent on his consecutive 

Colts best & fairest award, polling 85 votes in 9 colts 

matches after playing 7 games in the seniors. Tickets are fast 

running out for the Presentation Night on Saturday 22

Old Trinity was establishedin 1954 and cunently plays 

in A Section of theVictorian Amateur Football 

Association (VAFA). Its home is at the TrinityGrammar 

School playing fields in Bulleen Road, Bulleen. The 

facilities providedare arguably the best in the 

competition, with access to two superb grounds, 

firstrate changerooms and gym and a beautifully 

appointed social room. The club fieldsfour teams and 

has over 130 registered players.

DOUG ARMSTRONG 

Our feature today reveals the talents of Doug 

Armstrong, EFL Boundary Umpire Adviser. 

In the late 60’s before his umpiring life, Doug played 

a few years of VFA footy with Oakleigh FC. Later 

he transferred to a Richmond team (affiliated with 

Richmond VFL/AFL) who played in a Suburban 

Sunday Competition. Whilst playing in this Sunday 

League, Doug’s running ability was recognised by a 

Billy Bowtell who was the manager of a stable of professional 

runners. Billy was so impressed with Doug’s ability he 

encouraged him to take up Boundary Umpiring with the then 

VFL Reserve Grade. 

Consequently Doug took to Boundary Umpiring like a “Duck 

to Water” and after completing a hand full of games in the 

Federal League and a few VFL Under 19 matches he found 

himself a permanent niche umpiring VFL Reserve games. 

While umpiring on this list Doug earned the distinction of 

being one of the umpiring group to officiate in the very first 

match at Waverley Park (VFL Park). 

After 3 years service with the VFL Reserve Grade Doug was 

fortunate to be elevated to the VFL (AFL) Senior List. His time 

on the Senior List proved to be very successful as it led to him 

being appointed to a number of VFL Semi Finals and one VFL 

Grand Final. Soon after due to a serious car accident Doug was 

forced to retire from VFL Umpiring. 

Season 2004, was a return to umpiring with the West Gippsland 

League and following this Doug “saw the light” and 

commenced field umpiring with EFL during 2005. 

Subsequently in 2007 he was appointed to the EFL Umpires 

Board as Boundary Umpire Adviser. 

Since then Doug has been very innovative and following 

permission from the EFL introduced a “Radio Controlled 

System” for coaching purposes. Doug explained that this 

method costing about $300.00 allows him to talk to and

Brenton Crow, EFL Boundary 

Umpire, revealed that this “system” also allows 

Boundary Umpires to converse with Doug while he 

is providing coaching to them. Brenton added that 

he believed this new concept was a revolutionary method 

and will be a boon to the future development of umpires. 

Apart from his umpiring duties Doug has continued as a 

professional runner, teaming up with a Ballarat group 

trained by former North Melbourne footballer, Lennie 

Templar. 

This group has had much success at Stawell Gift events 

including celebrating the Stawell Gift victory of their team 

mate Rod Mathews 3 years ago. For Doug’s part he has a 

notable victory in the Ballarat 400 Metres Handicap, 2002 

(46.91 seconds) and also other various finals including 

events at the Bay Sheffield, Glenelg SA. 

Employment: - Doug is employed as Manager, Meat 

Department, Get Fresh Food and Vegetables, Boronia by 

proprietors Ian Stewart and Anna Marie Ferguson. Doug 

told me the he hopes to snare a good sponsorship deal for 

EFLUA from Ian and Anna Marie during 2008. 

At the conclusion of our interview Doug told me that he was 

very proud to be able to nominate a selection of Boundary 

Umpires for advancement to VFL ranks in 2008. He added 

that he also is looking forward to developing Boundary 

Umpires for some time to come.

HAWKS FLY INTO FINAL 

Finals football brings out the best and worst in players, as 

Ben Vandort found out last Saturday. Along with Lukas 

Appleby, the pair combined to for 14 of Boronia’s 

26 goals in their 50 point domination of Upper 

FTG which now sees Boronia face off against 

Doncaster East for the 2007 division 3 

premiership. Boronia’s 9 goal to 3 third term 

setting up the win, Boronia 26.12.168 defeating 

Upper FTG 18.10.118 as DYSON BAKER 

reports. 

Leading into this game Boronia was coming off a hard fought 

loss to Doncaster East in the second semi final in which a late 

fight back left them two points shy of the Lions. Meanwhile 

in the first semi final Upper FTG accounted for Nunawading 

kicking eight goals to three in the final term to set up a 

preliminary final berth. 

Another clash that would be on show was the battle between 

the top goal kickers in division 3, Lukas Appleby (57) from 

Boronia who took out the division three goal kicking one 

goal ahead of Upper FTG powerhouse forward Grant 

Noonan (56) and his team mate Matt Petracca (50) who 

finished in 6th place on the table. But these men would now 

be crucial lynchpins to their sides premiership hopes. 

The game got underway and it wasn’t long before Ash Hards 

put though the first of the day for Upper Gully within the first 

few minutes of the game, but it didn’t last long with a 

fantastic snap shot goal to Ben Dadswell giving the hawks 

the early lead. After a goal to Upper FTG forward Matt 

Petracca, Boronia kicked the next 4 goals for the quarter 

including two very nice running goals to Ben Vandort to give 

his side a 20 point lead at the quarter time break. Boronia 

6.4.40 leading Upper Ferntree Gully 3.2.20, with the Boronia 

centre line doing a fantastic job feeding Lukas Appleby who 

had two goals to quarter time leading Petracca who had one 

and Noonan who was yet to add to his previous total. 

Upper Gully came out from the huddle and meant business 

kicking the first two goals of the quarter within minutes of 

each other, and with another couple of goals later in the term 

they found themselves within two goals of the hawks. But a 

lapse in concentration in the last ten minutes of the quarter 

from Upper FTG saw Boronia kick the last 4 goals of the half 

- with Lukas Appleby’s kicking the last three of the term, 

and four for the quarter. The last ten minutes left Upper FTG 

trailing by 41 points at the main break, Boronia 13.5.83 to 

Upper Gully 6.5.41 with Lukas Appleby amongst the goals 

Home of the EFL Senior Presentation Night - Friday October 12 

with 5, his opponents Grant Noonan and Matt Petracca both 

with one a piece. 

Whatever Darren Linkins said to his chargers at 

half time payed off. They came out after half time 

and dominated the play, and made the most of their 

23 inside 50s with 15 scoring shots throughout the 

quarter including kicking 8 unanswered goals for 

the term. 

As they came out of the change room Boronia 

added five goals in the space of ten minutes including a great 

coast to coast goal finished off by Brett Rattray. , The Hawks 

were playing well all over the ground and they kept Upper 

FTG scoreless for 32 minutes from the 18 minute mark of the 

2nd term to the 24 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. This left 

the Hawks with a commanding lead of 84 points with Lukas 

Appleby leading the charge with 7 goals. 

The final term started as if Boronia were going to go on with 

the win and drive Upper Gully into the ground, kicking the 

first 2 goals within 2 minutes, but after that they could only 

manage another two goals both to Ben Vandort. Boronia 

extended the lead to 90 points at a couple of stages during the 

term but credit goes to Upper FTG as they won back 

respectability kicking the last 6 goals of the term. This left a 

couple of the Boronia fans worried about how much time 

was left, but Upper FTG with those 6 goals only managed to 

get within 50 points as Boronia won the day and a chance to 

face Doncaster East in the grand final. Boronia winning 

26.12.168 to Upper FTG 18.10.118. 

The best in front of goals for Boronia, Lukas Appleby lead 

the charge with 7 goals, while Ben Vandort chipped in 

booting a lazy 7 as well. Glenn Stevens kicked 3 and Brett 

Rattray 2 with singles to Grice, Brandner, Sloane, O’Reilly 

and Dadswell. For Upper FTG Tate Hickelton was the best 

kicking six while Grant Noonan kicked 5, Michael Scoon 

and Dom Di Mascio kicked three apiece with Watts, Petracca 

and Hards kicking singles. 

Better players for Boronia including their two forwards 

Appleby and Vandort, especially Vandort as he was the 

everywhere man for the Hawks, also the entire Boronia 

midfield who fed the forwards the ball all day. For Upper 

FTG Hards and Scoon in the centre both played good footy 

all game and of course Tate Hickelton kicking 6 goals. 

This Sunday Boronia once again head to Walker Park in 

Mitcham to take on Doncaster East for the chance to be 

crowned the 2007 division 3 premiers.


One of the Heathmont defenders turned to his playing coach 

Peter Forsyth and said “I think we’re home”. At the 19 

minute mark of the final term with a hard fought 19-point 

lead, the consensus around Tormore Reserve was that the Jets 

had booked their place in the following week’s Fourth 

Division Grand Final against the Whitehorse Pioneers. 

For all Heathmont’s midfield domination in the first half and 

their endeavour to establish and maintain a game winning 

lead , it was to be undone by three goals in five minutes that 

set up a nervous and thrilling end to a gruelling contest as 

GAVIN CASEY reports. 

Heathmont’s century goal kicking hero Mick Aitken was a 

standout in the first half with five goals (of six for the day) 

earning the Jets a 25-point half time advantage. 

With The Basin kicking with the aid of breeze to the Boronia 

Rd end, a momentum shift emerged from thin air. 

At a stage when both teams were dead on their feet the Bears 

game breaker Ben Holmes stepped up to take control of a 

loose ball across half forward to weave his way into the open 

and punt the ball down to tall forward Andrew Cowlishaw 

who held front spot to bring down a contested mark. His third 

goal closed the gap to thirteen. 

Before Forsyth’s Jets could compose themselves and shut down 

the match, usual defender come CHF Gabe Williams (returning 

from a back injury) sprung into action with two goals early in 

time-on of the last term. A snap from the right pocket followed up 

by a 40-metre set shot from a leading mark set up a dramatic finale 

to the Preliminary Final. 

With five minutes left on the clock there was only a point 

separating the two premiership contenders. The Basin, who only 

ten minutes earlier looked beaten as they saw the retiring stalwart 

Paul Bruton sent off for taking his frustration out on an opponent, 

remarkably transformed the game. Inspired by Holmes and 

Williams across half forward The Basin pushed forward but the 

bounce of the oval shaped ball on a patchy surface conspired to 

elude the advances of the resurgent Bears in those dying 

moments. 

Heathmont not only staved off the opposition’s advances but 

countered to get the final shot on goal and held on to win their way 

into the Grand Final. The final score was Heathmont 10-14-74 to 

The Basin 11-6-72. 

Early in the match The Basin looked to be the aggressor but their 

physical attention missed the mark as Heathmont led the way with 

their attack on the ball. Jon Knudsen and Levi Horton dominated 

around the stoppages as Scott Wishart and Chris Paver were the 

fast legs in the Jets running game complemented by the rebound 

off half back from Michael Fraser. Line breaker Shaun Leach 

subverted his running back role to mark the roaming danger man 

Holmes. They both got their hands on the ball enough to be 

considered by their coaches as among their best contributors. 

Heathmont held the early attacking edge with the weight of 

possession and speedy delivery to the high flying spearhead

DIVISION 4 PRELIM 

Aitken converting that Jets ascendancy. On the back of 

Aitken’s five goals Heathmont went into the change rooms 

leading 7-10 to 4-3. 

Forsyth was effusive with praise for his full forward. “We know 

what we get with Mick if we get it quick in to him. We know 

he’s a star and hard to beat. I’ve never played with someone so 

naturally gifted, he’s a freak. I do feel sorry for defenders who 

have to line up on him, especially if it is coming in quickly. He 

knows he has to perform each week and he did so today.” 

One on one Aitken was too agile and athletic for full back Leigh 

Haslem but it was the quick precise supply that set up the sure 

handed goalscorer. 

The Basin coach Darren Searle understood that pressure had 

to be applied up field to stop Aitken’s influence continuing. 

Luke Anderson, Leigh Cook and Craig Christie lifted in the 

second half to take control of the midfield battle. 

When Aitken was forced off with the blood rule, the Jets 

forward line looked less formidable as they wasted a few 

chances late in the term while their star was sidelined. The 

Basin made the most of a rare late entry inside 50 with 

Cowlishaw conversion signalling a tight finish as the Bears 

reduced the margin to 13 at the last break. 

“In the third term we did not make use of the breeze we had. Like 

last week we let ourselves down but the running game picked up 

in the fourth term as we got the run out of defence and used the 

wide open space of the wings,” said Heathmont Coach Forsyth. 

Like in last weeks game (against Eastern Lions in the 1st Semi) 

Forsyth deployed himself as a loose patrolling defensive General with 

the Jets trying to hold onto the lead as the opposition kicked with the 

wind in the final term. This allowed defender Anthony Witkowski to 

stroll forward as an extra man and sneak a vital goal. Bruton swooped 

on a misdirected kick backwards to Forsyth as the bounce eluded the 

defender and the Bears got a quick reply. Jets CHF Andrew Malcolm 

had been well held by Ben Conboy (Conboy blanketed 

Dinicolantonio the previous week) but late in the game came more 

active. He marked and booted his second goal at the ten-minute mark 

that seemingly put the Jets to a match winning 19-point lead. 

To the credit of The Basin they persisted and worked their way 

back into the game. However they left their run too late and for 

consecutive years went out of the finals in straight sets. 

Heathmont relegated from division three last year just beat 

Forest Hill to the last finals spot by percentage only. After 

two very similar scripted victories over the Eastern Lions and 

The Basin the Jets booked their spot in the ultimate 

showdown with the undefeated Whitehorse Pioneers. 

Aerialist Mick Aitken has kicked 121 goals in 20 games and 

the game plan for Forsyth surrounds his leading forward. 

“Anything can happen in Grand Finals. I know the pressure 

is certainly not on us and if we play our natural game on the 

day then who knows what could happen,” said Forsyth. 

“We know our strengths, we have to use our speed and get it 

to Mick quickly.”

DIVISION THREE GRAND FINAL PREVIEW 

The division three grand final this year 

unusually features two teams that were 

not in the finals last year. Doncaster 

East finished one game outside the four 

in fifth spot, whilst Boronia 

finished in eighth spot after 

their first year in division 

three. This year however, both 

sides since round three have 

been locked in the top four, 

and for the majority of the 

season have taken up the top 

two spots on the ladder. 

If the second semi final was 

anything to go by, this game 

will be a memorable one – 

especially if both teams can 

remain injury free unlike their 

first finals encounter. The 

second semi final saw injuries 

and strains to both sides, with 

Pat Garrity (knee) from 

Boronia, and John Blias (ankle) from Doncaster East 

being the main casualties. Both these players recovery 

over the last fortnight will have supporters waiting to 

see whether they gain selection for the grand final. 

The other major selection query for Doncaster East 

will be that of their coach Cameron Gillett and his 

recovery from an arm injury. Gillett has spoken of 

Radio Eastern stating he has the doctors OK, and will 

be ready to go, and his presence alone on the field for 

the Lions is worth it. 

But where will this game be won? 

THE RUCK: One of the key battles this weekend will 

be the battle between Scott McKenzie from Boronia 

and Michael Parthenides from Doncaster East. First 

use of the ball for the midfield proved the key in the 

second semi final, and with both sides boasting a very 

talented midfield line up, with plenty of rotation 

options, McKenzie and Parthenides will shoulder a lot 

of responsibility. 

THE MIDFIELD: This battle could simply come 

down to who performs better between Leigh Murphy 

(Lions) and Dean Grice (Hawks). The two players will 

not line up against each other, but what a match 

highlight it would be if they did. Both players have 

controlled the engine room for their sides this year, and 

will play a key role in their sides fortunes this 

weekend. Murphy led the centre clearances for 

Doncaster East in the all important third term in the 

second semi final, moving the ball 

forward on every occasion when the 

Lions burst open the game to take over 

the lead and set up their victory. His 

early shadow was Reid, but 

expect Murphy to receive 

some closer checking in the 

grand final. Dean Grice 

received plenty of attention 

last time around from Ventura 

and Foudoulis, and his second 

semi final game was not one to 

remember. He will be looking 

to improve on that 

performance, and has the 

ability and speed to be able to 

match Murphy’s performance. 

THE FORWARDS: Both 

sides boast a wealth of options 

in the forward line. Emil 

Parthenides was the main 

focal point the last time these 

sides met, with Blias off early. In the absence of Craig 

McKenzie, expect Brad Mills to again get the job. 

Down the other end, Lukas Appleby was this years 

division leading goal scorer, but in the second semi he 

was well held by usual Lions forward Mitch Craig. 

Whether Craig remains down back, or goes forward 

might hinge on Gillett’s inclusion into the side. 

Appleby returned to form last week with 7 goals, and 

he will need to kick more than his 3 from the second 

semi this week. The forward players to watch in the 

grand final will be Gary Sammartino for Doncaster 

East and Glenn Stevens for Boronia – both players that 

can go on ball, but will also have an impact up forward. 

THE FINAL SAY: Doncaster East’s last grand final 

appearance was in 2005, when they went in as 

favourites against Bayswater, but finished the day 

runners up. After finishing the year on top of the 

ladder, and winning the second semi final, they will 

again be slight favourites. This time around they have 

a new coach, a new determination and a bigger hunger 

to rise to division two. Boronia have had a long grand 

final drought, having not been amongst the September 

action since their division two grand final win of 2000. 

Surprisingly Darren Linkins was their coach back then, 

and is again their coach now – after two coaches in 

between times at the Hawks nest. The depth of the club 

has shown through this year, will all three teams in the 

grand final this weekend.

Well what a great week-end at the Nest with all four 

sides going through to the Grand Final. On behalf of 

the club we would like to take this Opportunity to 

sincerely thank all Players, Coaches, Committee, 

Sponsors, Members and Supporters for such a 

wonderful season all done through so much hard 

work. Players after such a great effort in all sides 

will now regroup this week and concentrate on 

bringing home the much needed result that we all 

have worked so hard for. Come the end of the day 

win, lose or draw we will all be able to look one 

another in the eye and know every one has done their 

best. Better players in the colts who started off the 

day with the best possible result against their higher 

regarded opponents showed what desire and 

commitment can do, we know boys you have earned 

the respect of the competition and can go on from 

here. Better players WHOLE SIDE. RESERVES 

after the break have not rested on their laurels have 

been working exceptionally hard on the track, with 

all positions up for grabs and like all our sides we 

have every confidence in the team bringing home to 

the nest that elusive cup. Seniors what an amazing 

effort to play as well as the team did against a worthy 

opponent in Upper FTG, showing that commitment 

to one another and genuine hard work set up a 

tremendous result and has now set the stage for a 

much desired crack at D/East. To all players we 

know you can do it for the club and for yourselves. 

Better players: Whole Side, with some tremendous 

individual efforts and skills. Vets last but not least 

showed that although a little older showed all who 

witnessed the game that the desire and enthusiasm is 

still very much a part of this team. We know guys 

you can certainly win the prize for the club and one 

another. This writer could not justify picking out 

particular players when so many did so much to gain 

this win. Well done guys and all helpers. It would be 

remiss of me if I did not on behalf of the club thank

teams have by now had their "Mad Monday". To get 

this far is a fantastic reward to all the players that 

have sacrificed themselves for a really tough pre 

season, training every Tuesday and Thursday nights 

not to mention recovery sessions in between. Then to 

back up on game day shows that dedication and 

perseverance can be rewarded. But the job has not 

been done yet! Boronia are not going to be easy as a 

Grand Final is always tight and we will have to 

expend everything we have today and leave every 

ounce of energy on Walker Park. We know if we give 

it everything plus more we can deliver. Good Luck to

The day that we strive for all season has finally 

arrived. Unfortunately the Mustang Reserves won't 

be joining the Colts as they were unceremoniously 

dumped out of the finals race last week by a 

rampaging Donny East. There were few highlights 

for our boys from the game. Peter Miller kicked 3 

goals and Glenn Bendle got 2. Better players were 

Scott McCall, Jaydn Head, Leigh Hooper, Daniel 

Dimitriou, Toby Trenfield & Alex Hocking. The 

Reserves have had a very good season and 

congratulations must go to Gags and the boys for 

what they have achieved. All the best to Boronia & 

Doncaster East today, in both Seniors and Reserves 

and may the best teams win. It's up to the Mustang 

Colts to achieve the ultimate glory today and all at 

the club wish KB and the boys all the best. After a bit 

of a slump towards the end of the season, KB now 

has the boys firing and after holding top position on 

the ladder for the entire season, they thoroughly 

deserve to bring home the premiership cup for the 

2nd year in a row. I'm sure there will be a large 

Mooroolbark crowd here today to cheer the boys on 

and all are welcome back to the Heights clubrooms 

after the game to hopefully help celebrate a victory. 

A big thanks to all at the club who have helped out 

this year and especially to Julie Duckworth who is 

stepping down after 5 years as President and John & 

Margaret Lowry who are also stepping down as 

Secretary and Treasurer after many years of service. 

These people have been tireless workers for the club

DIVISION FOUR GRAND FINAL PREVIEW 

This year we welcome back Whitehorse 

Pioneers to the final game of the season in 

division four, while for Heathmont, it marks 

a strong return to division four this year 

after relegation from division 

three last year. 

The Pioneers season this year has 

been a standout across all 

divisions, remaining as the only 

undefeated senior side during the 

home and away season. For 

Heathmont, just making the 

finals was a battle that went right 

down to the final round of the 

season, as they kept Forest Hill at 

bay by percentage to claim a 

finals berth. 

So where will this game be won? 

THE RUCK: Brad Hancock and 

Rade Djuric will go head to head 

in this battle. Hancock should be well rested coming into the 

grand final having played only one game in the month of 

August – that being the second semi final. While Hancock is 

the conventional ruckman type, Djuric has been filling the 

role for Heathmont during the season, and has worked 

tirelessly against much taller opponents. While Hancock 

might have the better of Djuric in the tap outs department in 

the match, watch out for the work of Djuric around the 

ground providing a contest. 

THE MIDFIELD: The run and rotations by both sides will 

play the key part in this game. For Whitehorse, they have 

been able to gain first use of the ball via their tough midfield 

dominance, which has propelled them to their undefeated 

record. With the likes of Jamie Carpenter, Adam Barker, 

Jacob Daley and co. rotating through the midfield, the 

Pioneers have a wealth of midfield options this year. For 

Heathmont, their run has been a major part of getting them 

through the finals to date. David Sindrey Chris Paver, 

Jonathon Knudsen and Dan Offenbaume have all been in 

great form during the finals, and will play a big role in trying 

to gain possessions, while at the same time trying to stop the 

Pioneers run in the middle as well. 

THE FORWARDS: This will be one of the highlights of the 

game, with an abundance of talented forwards out on the 

ground this weekend in the grand final. Up one end you have 

the best forward line in the competition; having kicked over 

400 points more than any division four side this season. 

Down the other end you have the best 

forward in the competition, who by himself 

has kicked more goals on his own, that the 

top two goal kickers for the Pioneers 

combined. The Pioneers have 

been blessed with goal kickers 

this year, with new recruit Jacob 

Paulka taking out the clubs best 

and fairest, as well as leading 

from the front up forward with 

55 goals for the season. His 

partner in crime John 

Dinicolantonio seemed to 

struggle to find a position in the 

opening stages of the season, but 

his move up forward has been the 

spot he has thrived, kicking 49 

goals for the year at his new club. 

Mick Aitken for Heathmont has 

blitzed the opposition defenses 

this year, kicking 121 goals to 

date. Andrew Malcolm is their next highest goal scorer with 

28 goals, and they do rely heavily on goals from their 

midfield as well. 

The big difference between these two sides is their goal 

kicking depth. Whitehorse has 13 players who have kicked 

over 10 goals for the year, whilst Heathmont have only 7 

players who have amassed double figures in the goal 

kicking department. However one could take the ‘glass half 

full’ approach, and say that Heathmont has one player who 

has kicked a three figure sum this year, whilst the Pioneers 

have no one who has achieved this feat. 

THE FINAL SAY: For Whitehorse, season 2006 brought 

their first senior grand finals appearance in the EFL. Can 

season 2007 be their first senior grand final victory? In their 

time in division four, they have been regular finals 

participants, but have not been able to take the next step. 

After a dominant home and away season, they did not take 

the foot off the pedal in the finals, taking care of The Basin 

to secure their grand final berth. For Heathmont, their last 

grand final appearance was in season 2004 – the year in 

which they won the premiership, and made the move to 

division three. Their tenure in division three was short, 

lasting just two years, but they have bounced back this year 

to feature in the finals. The major change to their list from 

their last grand final appearance is their age, and it will be 

a very young Jets line up taking to the field this weekend.

FERNTREE GULLY 

Today is Grand Final day for our U18 boys. It has been a 

long, hard road starting back in January, but it has been well 

worth the ride. Congratulations to all the boys, coaching 

staff and support staff for what has been an outstanding 

year going through undefeated, including all pre-season 

practice games. Today the boys can make History for the 

club and themselves, being the first U18 side to win a 

Premiership for the Football Club. We wish them well and 

hopefully they can bring home the silverware to add to our 

collection. The clubrooms will be open for refreshments

FOREST HILL 

Well, in what can only be described as a scrappy affair the 

boys booked a place in the last dance with a nail biting 

prelim victory. Despite not beating the Bears during the 

Home & Away season the boys picked the perfect game to 

reverse the result. Again the performance was epitiomised 

by the traits that have become the theme of this team in 

determination & perseverance. Despite the obstacles this 

team has faced over the year they have continued to deliver 

the results and now get there chance at the big one. To the 

players, you have worked tirelessly over the year and it is 

now up to you to achieve the ultimate reward for the club 

but more importantly yourselves. Not that any further 

motivation is required however, Hollywood who has been 

an absolute gem for the footy club will be pulling the boots 

on for the final time, if there was one bloke who deserves 

to bow out in the finest way it is Hollywood (sigh, that was 

painful). All at the club wish the boys the best of luck and 

are sure they will reward all in what has been an extremely 

successful season in regards to our progress. Preparation for 

2008 is already well underway and a premiership would be 

just reward for the effort committed by so many. Good 

luck! The club would also like to congratulate the 2007 

Best & Fairest winners – Atko (seniors) and Chooka 

(reserves) both formidable footballers but more importantly 

great blokes to have around the club and important to our 

on-going progress. Well done to the winners and the 

runners-up in what was a close race 

HEATHMONT 

Last week was one of mixed fortunes for the Jets, with the 

colts losing and the seniors winning their respective games 

against the Basin. The colts started well with a 3 goal to 1 

first quarter, but were gradually overrun thereafter and 

ended up 22 points short at the final siren. Sandeep Rana, 

Brad Greaves, Kevin Clark, Duncan Jones, Brent Furniss 

CLUB NOTES 

and Phillip Leach were amongst the best players for 

Heathmont. Whilst our colts won’t be playing today against 

the Eagles, their contribution to the entire senior club 

cannot be underestimated. Six of them have played in 

senior matches this season and several more could have 

also stepped up based upon their form throughout the year. 

Their support of the reserves and seniors in “The Pocket” 

has been fantastic too. On behalf of the club, thank you all 

very much. Our seniors started well too, holding a handy 25 

point lead at the major break. The Basin fought back in the 

second half, and with three goals kicked in 5 minutes late in 

the final quarter, got within 1 point. It was a tense finish to 

the game as our defence held tight and the boys finally got 

the ball forward for one more point. Whilst Mick Aitken, 

Shaun Leach, Scott Wishart, Jon Knudsen, Mick Fraser and 

Levi Horton made the best players list, there were many 

more worthy of a mention. It was a gritty and determined 

team performance, one that proved to any doubters that the 

Jets deserve their spot in today’s grand final. Let’s hope 

they can continue their good form as they take on the 

undefeated Whitehorse Pioneers today. Our reserves are 

also in grand final action today. Having won through 

against the Basin in the 1st semi final, they take on Forest 

Hill today in what should be another cracker of a game. We 

wish the seniors and reserves all the best for today; we 

know you’ll do us proud. As the season draws to a close 

today, we’d like to thank all our sponsors for their support

boys playing in the one that counts more than any other.

Eastern Ranges versus Oakleigh

Round 18 of the TAC Cup saw the seventh placed 

Eastern Ranges take on the ninth placed Oakleigh 

Chargers at Box Hill City Oval. Both teams needed the 

win to ensure their finals hopes are still alive! 

Eastern came out of the blocks early with a goal to 

Matthew Cunningham (Wantirna South) in the opening 

few minutes. Liam Shiels (The Basin) was in the action 

early, with his second and third efforts continually on 

display. Trent Zomer (South Croydon) worked hard, 

and eventually won a free kick, which he slotted 

straight through the middle for Ranges second goal. 

Andrew Renton (Croydon) was the first causality of 

the day, but certainly wouldn’t be the last when he was 

taken off with a knee injury; he took no further part in 

the game. Ben Griffiths (Mitcham) was great 

defensively in Eastern’s forward line, making sure the 

pressure was placed back on the Chargers. 20 minutes 

had passed in the quarter before the Chargers were able 

to get a goal on the scoreboard, however they backed it 

up minutes later with another. The Chargers seemed to 

have more possession however didn’t quite capitalise 

on their opportunities. At quarter time Chargers led by 

5 points. 

Eastern Ranges 3.1.19 - Oakleigh Chargers 3.6.24 

The second quarter saw the Chargers score in the 

opening minute to increase their lead. Zac Ward had a 

change of jumpers as the injuries began to pile up. 

Andrew Renton had already left the ground in the first 

quarter to take no further part in the game, then Ben 

Griffiths (Mitcham) was taken off with a heavy knock, 

followed by Jordan Gysberts (Norwood), and then 

Shaun Dixon (East Ringwood). While Shaun Dixon 

returned to the field twice in the third quater he didn’t 

take part in the final quarter. Jordan spent a lot of time 

with the physio on the bench and made a return to the 

field however he too could not take part in the last 

quarter. Dale Walker (Chirnside Park) was impressive 

on the field, taking the opposition on and running 

through the midfield. However the Chargers kicked 

three goals straight to increase their lead. Matt Lobbe 

(Monbulk) pegged one back for the Ranges, however 

the siren just beat another Ranges thrust at goal.

The Ranges had opportunities early in the 

third term, but couldn’t quite capitalise, until 

a brilliant goal to Zac Ward, followed by an 

inspirational goal form the boundary line by 

Brad Jones (Templestowe) brought the 

margin back to 10 points. The Chargers were 

not to be out done though, and responded almost 

instantly. Luke Mc Donald kicked another goal and 

brought the crowd into the game; they could sense that 

it was game on! 

Matt Lobbe kicked his second for the day, and there 

was aura of excitement in the air. A brilliant piece of 

team play saw Trent Zomer, kick to the ever-present 

Rory Sloane, to Brad Jones to bring the margin down 

to 2 points. Zac Ward kicked the goal to give Ranges 

the lead, and the crowd loved it! Both teams kicked 

another goal each to give the Ranges a 4point lead 

going into the last. A win meant a lot to both teams, this 

was evident with a slight scuffle after the siren. 

Eastern Ranges 11.8.74- Oakleigh Chargers 10.10.70 

Eastern went into the last quarter with no bench; and 

the Chargers sensed their opportunity and pounced, 

kicking the first 3 goals of the quarter. Zac Ward kicked 

his third for the day and the Ranges were still in with a 

chance. The Chargers responded immediately. Rory 

Sloane had chances but couldn’t quite capitalise. The 

Chargers were more efficient with their ball usage and 

thus found it easier to score goals. Eastern scored 

another goal to bring the margin back to 11 points half 

way through the last, but that was as close as they were 

going to get. The Ranges were running out of energy 

with out a beach, and the rampant Chargers came home 

with a burst, kicking the last three goals of the match to 

run away winners by 30points. 

Eastern will open their finals campaign this Saturday 

afternoon 8th September at MC Labour Park against 

the Geelong Falcons.
