MIKHEIL KOBAKHIDZE
Scriptwriter, director and composer Mikheil Kobakhidze
was born on 5 April, 1939 in Tbilisi. He entered the film direction
faculty of Moscow All-Union Institute of Cinematography
in 1959 (Sergei Gerasimov and Tamara Makarova workshop).
He had begun to make films since 1961 from the studentship
period and produced short-length films Young Love (1961)
and Merry-Go-Round (1962). By the aid of Sergei Gerasimov
he passed earlier the third year finals and started in 1963 to
make professional career in Tbilisi. It was a beginning of intensive
but short-length creative work, intensive for its form and
contents and short-length because the authorities have always
put obstacles in his way. His degree work Eight and a Half was
considered to be an anti-Soviet work and destroyed before its
sending to Moscow. In 1964 he made another diploma film
The Wedding which was awarded three prizes at Oberhausen
short-length film festival – the main prize of the festival, FI-
PRESCI prize and International Evangelistic Film Center prize.

In 1969, after Mikheil Kobakhidze made his Musicians, he was
forbidden independent filmmaking by the decree of Alexandr
Romanov, the chairman of Moscow State Committee of Cinematography.
In 2001, after a long pause, Mikheil Kobakhidze
made in France On the Way.
The Georgian films retrospective show - Georgia in Focus
- was held in Arsenal movie theatre of Berlin in 2007 and the
classic of Georgian cinema showed 6 short-length films, including
his unknown student films such as Young Love and
Merry-Go-Round and On the Way made in France. What have
you been doing for 34 years? – it was the first question German
viewers asked after the film show.
Georgian director, which has been a victim of Soviet censorship,
has been living and working in France since 1996. Retrospective
show of the director’s films was held at the Venice Film
Festival in 1996.
