KNUT HAMSUN AND CINEMA
The homeland of Knut Hamsun Norway celebrated the 150th anniversary
of the writer’s birth in the present year and implemented yearlong
program of commemorations of the author. The nation-wide events were
held under the patronage of the royal family of Norway and personally
Queen Mete-Meritt.
Our country along with the American and European countries responded
to the writer’s jubilee. Hamsun traveled in Georgia in 1899 and
reflected his journey in his book of In Wonderland. His play Queen Tamar
is a result of this Odyssey as well.
Keen interest towards the Hamsun works has been unfading in Georgia
since XX century.
The Tbilisi 10th jubilee film festival of this year presents some films
based on the novels of Norwegian writer for the first time.
More than 25 films are based on Hamsun’s works including a biopic.
It is paradoxical that the first screen versions of the Norwegian writer’s
works belong to actors rather than directors. For example his Pan was filmed
by an actor of Oslo National theatre Harald Schwenzen in 1922. The
curiosity of viewers of Pan was particularly aggravated by a dramatic epilogue
shot by the film authors in Africa and Algeria. Right in that period
of time orientalism came into fashion and the film’s epilogue_ adventurous
trip of lieutenant Glan to the remote exotic country - fits in an aesthetic
demand of that time. The last screen version of Hamsun’s works in the period
of silent movies was Sværmere a film by the first professional director
of Swedish nationality - Brunius, which was based on Hamsun’s Dreamers.
The film’s premiere was held in Stockholm in 1923.
The first sound film on the basis of Hamsun’s novel Victoria was made
later on in Germany in 1935 and was directed by a famous cameraman
Carl Hoffman. Soon Victoria was followed by another German director’s
Olav Ford’s film Pan. The Story of Lieutenant Glan.
Hamsun himself as a man of conservative manner was quite skeptical
and indifferent about the XX century technical miracle _ cinematography
and was not enthusiastic about the screen versions of his novels. The only
exception which the writer approved of was Markens grøde (Growth of the
Soil, 1921), a silent movie by Gunnar Sommerfeldt.
This year Georgian filmgoers can see and appreciate some screen versions
of the novels by the great Norwegian writer and the films made about
his life.
