FILM SCHOOL<br />
The London Film School (LIFS)<br />
Founded in 1956.<br />
The school’s current director is Ben Gibson and its current chairman<br />
of the Board of Governors is Mike Leigh<br />
The LFS is the oldest-established international school of film technique<br />
in the world. Rather than try and create a national cinema, as<br />
so many government-funded schools have done, LFS from the outset<br />
fostered a broad, craft-based culture of excellence and focused on<br />
the distinguished students from different countries. Only 25 % of the<br />
school students are of British origin at the moment.<br />
In 1974 the school was re-named as LIFS, the London International<br />
Film School. The LIFS constitution is very unusual. The School is a<br />
registered charity, a non-profit making company. All students become<br />
members of the Association, and, together with the other members,<br />
elect a Board of Governors which has the overall responsibility for the<br />
management of the School. The current Chairman is the internationally<br />
renowned British director and LFS graduate Mike Leigh.<br />
While London University ratifies the LIFS syllabus it still remains a<br />
completely independent educational institution.<br />
The Film School graduates number more than 3000 history and<br />
among them are Michael Mann, Mike Leigh, Ian Smith, Terry Bradford,<br />
Curtis Clark, Tak Fujimoto, John Irvin, Miguel Pereira, Franc<br />
Roddam, David Scott, Jeffrey Simpson, Ivan Stresberg, Ian Wilson<br />
and others.<br />
The school generates about 180 films each year of which 25-40 are<br />
being sent to different film festivals. The LIFS films were presented at<br />
over 100 festivals and achieved lots of prizes within 2007, including<br />
7 main awards. 5 short films were nominated for BAFTA award this<br />
year and one of them was the London Film School production.<br />
The LIFS post-graduate film courses are one of the most advanced in<br />
the world. Nearly 25 undergraduates are divided in 5-6 groups and<br />
pass several difficult stages in 2-year course of study the main principle<br />
of which is indivisibility of craft and art.<br />
Georgian Minister of culture, monuments protection and sports Mr.<br />
Nikoloz Rurua, the LIFS director Mr. Ben Gibson and chairman of<br />
board of governors Mr. Mike Leigh will sign paramount memorandum<br />
within the framework of the Tbilisi 10th international film festival.<br />
Under the memorandum the best young Georgian directors will<br />
be able to continue their studies in the London Film School by the state<br />
scholarship. And the festival program will include 16 short-length<br />
films produced by the LIFS.
