The greatest contemporary British filmmaker is often compared
with Abbas Kiarostami and Ken Loach, but in the opinion
of Leigh himself no political pathos is felt in his films unlike
the films by Loach. He narrates to the viewers about ordinary
people, often the representatives of working class, leaving out
sensations and melodrama.
Mike Leigh was born on 20 February, 1943 in Broughton
(Great Britain) to the family of Jewish emigrants (his family
name - Liberman). The graduate of Royal Academy of Dramatic
Art was considered to be a promising actor.
Later on he continued his studies in the St. Martin Art College
and London Film School. He began as a theatre director
and playwright and in parallel played episodic parts in several
British films of early 60-ies.
By 1970 Leigh had produced nine TV plays. His early productions
are full of satirical humour and narrate about the life
of middle class representatives.

High Hopes based on the novel by Dickens with the same title.
However, the film had no ready-made script and by the insistence
of the director was structured as an improvisation as well
as the performance of actors. It is characteristic of Leigh, who
begins to work on films by a plain storyline, the idea rather than
specific scenario. Characters of the personages and gradual
evolution of the story become visible in the process of shooting.
The films made in the 90-ies Naked and Vera Drake tell the
working class representatives’ story and are by far gloomy and
brutal. Naked was awarded Palm d’Or of Cannes international
Film Festival for best direction and Vera Drake - the American
Film Academy award for the best script and direction.
Secrets and Lies made in 1996 is about a successful black woman
and was awarded four prizes of American Film Academy.
The latest film by Mike Leigh Happy-Go-Lucky is a modernday
comedy full of humanism and social realism (award of
American Film Academy for the best script).
