Message from the Minister
The NSW Higher School Certificate offers our emerging instrumentalists, vocalists and
composers the opportunity to study and perform their craft through courses that
present both challenges and opportunities.
In turn, ENCORE, presented at the Sydney Opera House, provides an opportunity to
showcase examples of how students have risen to meet those challenges by
submitting exemplary work.
This year’s program showcases the work of 20 HSC students from 2012. The
program extends across a range of music genres, performance types and the
performers themselves represent a range of backgrounds, locations and school
systems.
From vocal performances of pop music to a euphonium solo; from a jazz vocal
ensemble through to classical solos for the violin, piano and flute – this program will
provide the audience with a journey as rich in talent and diversity as our NSW HSC
students themselves.
Whether the audience has attended to celebrate the work of these performers, or, as
future HSC students, to learn more about the standards that can be reached through
HSC music courses, this program will certainly entertain.
At the conclusion of these performances, please remember that your applause
extends not just to the performers, but to their teachers, families and mentors who
have worked with them throughout their school years.
Please enjoy ENCORE 2012, and join me in offering congratulations to all those
selected to present their work to you at this performance.
The Hon. Adrian Piccoli MP
Minister for Education
ENCORE and HSC Music
2012 HSC Encore Program
ENCORE is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students
from the Higher School Certificate Music examinations. Music syllabuses for the
Higher School Certificate offer students opportunities to develop musical knowledge,
skills and understanding and to become adept at performing and composing in a
variety of styles and genres.
ENCORE also recognises the exemplary work in musicology electives. Students in the
Music 2 and Music Extension courses who undertook musicology electives were
required to submit a prepared essay as part of the HSC examination. Students of
Music 1 undertaking musicology as an elective were required to present a 10-minute
viva voce (discussion) with the examiners at the time of their practical examinations.
The students named in the Honour List in this program were identified as having
exemplary work in musicology electives.
HSC Music
In 2012, students were examined according to Stage 6 syllabuses in Music 1, Music
2 and Music Extension. In addition to the core which has aural training as its basis,
students had the option to undertake elective studies in performance, composition
and musicology.
The Music 1 course is primarily designed for students who have not studied the
elective course in Music Years 7–10, although it is available to all students who wish
to study it.
The Music 2 course consists of a mandatory topic, Music of the Last 25 Years
(Australian focus), and an additional topic. In this course, students perform works
representing these topics, write their own compositions, and undertake musicological
research and aural training.
In the Music Extension course students specialise in performance, composition or
musicology.
Examination
2012 HSC Encore Program
In all Music Practical examinations in 2012, students could present performances in a
variety of styles. In Music 1, students presented up to four pieces representing topics
studied in the HSC course. In Music Extension performance, one piece had to be an
ensemble work. In addition, all students undertook a written examination that tested
aural and/or musicology skills.
Graduates of the Board of Studies Music courses have developed skills in general
understanding and appreciation of music.
around her. She has performed at many local events, reaching a wider
audience when she played lead guitar for Australian pop/rock band Short
Stack during a live concert in 2011. Her school has recognised her
achievements in presenting her with its Excellence in the Arts Award 2012,
and she won a Music Achievers Award from the Australian International
extensive performing experience corroborates that. As a member of her
school stage band she travelled extensively to local, state and national jazz
festivals and other music events. In 2009 and again in 2012 the band
travelled to Cuba, performing with talented Cuban school students and
musicians. She has been inspired by performing annually at her school
at the Conservatorium of Music until Year 11, when she added composition
to her studies. Emma completed her HSC Music 2 course in 2012 as an
accelerated student, and she will undertake Music Extension in 2013. Her
composition was heavily influenced by the sounds and style of Aboriginal
music. She is joined by a large ensemble of strings, piano, percussion and
harp with conductor Alexander Yao.
Mick Hambly
Port Macquarie High School
the moment, and he intends to keep it that way. He started playing guitar in
2008, and singing a year later. He writes his own songs, as well as
performing at local venues, and was selected for Bravissimo, a showcase
piano at age five and the saxophone at age eight. He was awarded a music
scholarship to Barker College, where he nurtured his love of music, jazz in
particular. In 2010 he gained his AMusA in saxophone. He was placed third
in the state in HSC Music 2, and second in Music Extension. Other awards
Justin started learning piano at age nine, developing the strong passion for
music that he likes to share with others through teaching and performance.
He has won many sectional prizes in eisteddfods since 2008. In 2011 he
completed his Grade 8 IMEB piano exam and is currently working towards
his Professional Performance Diploma. Justin has now turned to
composition, using this work to express the environment surrounding the
Wave Rock formation in WA. Justin intends to continue his studies in music,
combining them with a Bachelor of Advanced Mathematics (University of
Wollongong) and advanced German (University of New England).
Katrina Tang
Pymble Ladies’ College
Katrina began playing piano at the age of three and was the recipient in
Philharmonic Orchestra Secondary Schools Concerto Competition. In 2012
she won the Roger Woodward Scholarship and the 2MBS-FM Recording
Award.
James Taylor
Kooringal High School
James started playing guitar in Year 6. While he had lessons for many years,
it was older students at his high school who inspired him and introduced
him to a range of music. This encouraged him to form a band which has
gone on to play at many events, and win many competitions, including the
2012 Riverina Battle of the Bands. He attributes his discovery of fingerstyle,
and the influence of Tommy Emmanuel’s playing, to a great shift in his own
playing. James began teaching guitar in 2011. This was such a rewarding
experience that he aims to have a career in music education.
