2 editorial Editorial W e are the largest local pork producer, the largest investor in the Romanian agriculture and we are proud of the quality of our products, manufactured from domestic pork, coming from pigs grown in Romania, with Romanian feeds. We are proud of our predecessors, those who made Comtim brand into a synonym of quality and taste, and we want to reposition this traditional brand, so much loved by the inhabitants of the Western part of the country – and not only – to its rightful place: a national, strong brand valued by everybody and a potential export brand on the European Union’s common market. It is time for performance. The future of the meat industry is heading towards an integrated concept, towards vertical integration, from farm to fork, where the key advantage lies with the consumer, due to the guarantee of the value added product. Oana Florescu, Purchasing Manager Agroalim: „Our role is to identify new business opportunities My first task when I started working for Agroalim seven years ago, as an Import Assistant, was to record all the company’s import operations. I want to thank my colleague Marina Ionel for the help, patience and detailed explanations she gave me then. I arrived with a solid theoretical base (I was a university assistant within the Faculty of International Economic Relations - ASE) but I quickly found out that the business today means fast reaction speed, a great deal of experience and a lot of work. I believe that the entire activity of the company begins here, within the Purchasing Department. Our role is not only to order the merchandise, but also to identify business opportunities. We work with strong partners and we take pride in the fact that we have the experience necessary to buy “anything and from anywhere. We are five within the Purchasing Department of Agroalim (Ioana, Marina, Madalina, Mihai and Oana) and our role is to make sure that our sales colleagues have something to sell every day. Everybody starts with the beginning (the records I talked about above), as it is essential that the products are understood in details, as well as the types of operations conducted with each supplier. One essential aspect of our activity is the quality of the products purchased. However, buying quality products, for good prices, in due time and which also sell well, is totally different. This is what we try to do on a daily basis. It is not easy, (we have a saying that: “We haven’t seen everything yet and many things can still happen), but with attention, work and perseverance, any difficult situation can be solved. I have talked about one of the two halves of my life. The other half, at least as equally important, is my family. I have two boys (Mihnea, 7 and half years old, and Dani, 3 years old) who complete my life. There is nothing more beautiful than to arrive at home after a day of work and be welcomed cheerfully and highly energetically by two goblins who scream, “Mommy, it’s so good to have you home!, and then you forget about tiredness and, after you gather the toys spread around the entire house, you prepare dinner for them and make some time to be with them. In the little spare time I still have, I like reading (Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa – as well as works by important economists). I was born in Brasov so I have been skiing since I was little, managing to create so far (with the help of my father) two skiers – my husband and elder son – while the youngest one follows. The most recent analyses on physical (noise) and chemical pollutants (ammonia and dust) conducted by our colleagues from Smithfield Ferme, in collaboration with Timis Public Health Directorate, at the farms from Parta and Padureni and at Padureni Feedmill, fall within this effort. These measurements are part of an ongoing program for the monitoring of work conditions and pollutants and are periodically conducted by Smithfield’s teams of specialists, independently as well as in collaboration with central and local regulators. Following the analyses conducted in Parta and Padureni farm, it was established that the level of ammonia and vegetal dust is below the maximum allowed values. Parta and Padureni are two of Smithfield’s old farms modernized, which were considered representative in terms of their headcounts. The analyses conducted at Padureni Feedmill recommended the taking of additional collective and individual protection measures regarding phonic pollutants (noise), measures which were implemented immediately, thus ensuring the health and safety of Smithfield employees.
