W e<br />

are <strong>the</strong> largest local pork<br />

producer, <strong>the</strong> largest investor<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Romanian agriculture<br />

and <strong>we</strong> are proud of <strong>the</strong> quality<br />

of our products, manufactured from<br />

domestic pork, coming from pigs<br />

grown in Romania, with Romanian<br />

feeds. We are proud of our predecessors,<br />

those who made Comtim brand<br />

into a synonym of quality and taste,<br />

and <strong>we</strong> want to reposition this traditional<br />

brand, so much loved by <strong>the</strong><br />

inhabitants of <strong>the</strong> Western part of <strong>the</strong><br />

country – and not only – to its rightful<br />

place: a national, strong brand valued<br />

by everybody and a potential export<br />

brand on <strong>the</strong> European Union’s<br />

common market.<br />

It is time for performance. The future<br />

of <strong>the</strong> meat industry is heading<br />

towards an integrated concept, towards<br />

vertical integration, from farm<br />

to fork, where <strong>the</strong> key advantage lies<br />

with <strong>the</strong> consumer, due to <strong>the</strong> guarantee<br />

of <strong>the</strong> value added product.<br />

Dear friends,<br />

I have now <strong>the</strong> extraordinary opportunity to address all of you who<br />

are part of <strong>the</strong> big <strong>Smithfield</strong> family in Romania – both my old colleagues<br />

from <strong>Smithfield</strong> <strong>Ferme</strong>, and my new colleagues from <strong>Smithfield</strong><br />

Prod and Agroalim. This year, <strong>we</strong> are opening a new chapter of<br />

our journey toge<strong>the</strong>r, more po<strong>we</strong>rful and more united, with <strong>the</strong> certainty<br />

of having stood up against <strong>the</strong> storms of a very riotous local<br />

and global business environment, and found ourselves, at <strong>the</strong> end of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se trials, victorious and confident about our fur<strong>the</strong>r success.<br />

My first task when I started working<br />

for Agroalim seven years<br />

ago, as an Import Assistant, was<br />

to record all <strong>the</strong> company’s import operations.<br />

I want to thank my colleague Marina<br />

Ionel for <strong>the</strong> help, patience and detailed explanations<br />

she gave me <strong>the</strong>n. I arrived with<br />

a solid <strong>the</strong>oretical base (I was a university<br />

assistant within <strong>the</strong> Faculty of International<br />

Economic Relations - ASE) but I quickly<br />

found out that <strong>the</strong> business today means<br />

fast reaction speed, a great deal of experience<br />

and a lot of work.<br />

I believe that <strong>the</strong> entire activity of <strong>the</strong><br />

company begins here, within <strong>the</strong> Purchasing<br />

Department. Our role is not only<br />

to order <strong>the</strong> merchandise, but also to identify<br />

business opportunities. We work with<br />

strong partners and <strong>we</strong> take pride in <strong>the</strong><br />

fact that <strong>we</strong> have <strong>the</strong> experience necessary<br />

to buy “anything and from anywhere<strong>”</strong>.<br />

We are five within <strong>the</strong> Purchasing Department<br />

of Agroalim (Ioana, Marina,<br />

Madalina, Mihai and Oana) and our role<br />

is to make sure that our sales colleagues<br />

have something to sell every day. Everybody<br />

starts with <strong>the</strong> beginning (<strong>the</strong> records<br />

I talked about above), as it is essential that<br />

<strong>the</strong> products are understood in details, as<br />

<strong>we</strong>ll as <strong>the</strong> types of operations conducted<br />

with each supplier.<br />

One essential aspect of our activity is <strong>the</strong><br />

quality of <strong>the</strong> products purchased. Buying<br />

With attention, work and perseverance,<br />

any difficult situation can be solved<strong>”</strong>.<br />

is easy, while <strong>the</strong> price is only <strong>the</strong> tenth part<br />

(not always <strong>the</strong> most important one) of a<br />

purchasing agreement. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, buying<br />

quality products, for good prices, in due<br />

time and which also sell <strong>we</strong>ll, is totally<br />

different. This is what <strong>we</strong> try to do on a<br />

daily basis. It is not easy, (<strong>we</strong> have a saying<br />

that: “We haven’t seen everything yet and<br />

many things can still happen<strong>”</strong>), but with<br />

attention, work and perseverance, any difficult<br />

situation can be solved.<br />

I have talked about one of <strong>the</strong> two halves<br />

of my life. The o<strong>the</strong>r half, at least as equally<br />

important, is my family. I have two boys<br />

(Mihnea, 7 and half years old, and Dani, 3<br />

years old) who complete my life. There is<br />

nothing more beautiful than to arrive at<br />

home after a day of work and be <strong>we</strong>lcomed<br />

cheerfully and highly energetically by two<br />

goblins who scream, “Mommy, it’s so good<br />

to have you home!<strong>”</strong>, and <strong>the</strong>n you forget<br />

about tiredness and, after you ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

toys spread around <strong>the</strong> entire house, you<br />

prepare dinner for <strong>the</strong>m and make some<br />

time to be with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> little spare time I still have, I like<br />

reading (Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Mario<br />

Vargas Llosa – as <strong>we</strong>ll as works by important<br />

economists). I was born in Brasov so<br />

I have been skiing since I was little, managing<br />

to create so far (with <strong>the</strong> help of my<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r) two skiers – my husband and elder<br />

son – while <strong>the</strong> youngest one follows.<br />

Pollutant-free<br />

One of <strong>Smithfield</strong>’s values and<br />

major concerns is to provide a safe<br />

and healthy working environment<br />

for our employees. it is <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

critical to ensure health and safety<br />

and to make continuous investments<br />

in this field.<br />

The most recent analyses on physical<br />

(noise) and chemical pollutants<br />

(ammonia and dust) conducted by<br />

our colleagues from <strong>Smithfield</strong> <strong>Ferme</strong>,<br />

in collaboration with Timis Public<br />

Health Directorate, at <strong>the</strong> farms from<br />

Parta and Padureni and at Padureni<br />

Feedmill, fall within this effort. These<br />

measurements are part of an ongoing<br />

program for <strong>the</strong> monitoring of work<br />

conditions and pollutants and are periodically<br />

conducted by <strong>Smithfield</strong>’s<br />

teams of specialists, independently<br />

as <strong>we</strong>ll as in collaboration with central<br />

and local regulators.<br />

Following <strong>the</strong> analyses conducted<br />

in Parta and Padureni farm, it was<br />

established that <strong>the</strong> level of ammonia<br />

and vegetal dust is below <strong>the</strong><br />

maximum allo<strong>we</strong>d values. Parta and<br />

Padureni are two of <strong>Smithfield</strong>’s old<br />

farms modernized, which <strong>we</strong>re considered<br />

representative in terms of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

headcounts. The analyses conducted<br />

at Padureni Feedmill recommended<br />

<strong>the</strong> taking of additional collective<br />

and individual protection measures<br />

regarding phonic pollutants (noise),<br />

measures which <strong>we</strong>re implemented<br />

immediately, thus ensuring <strong>the</strong> health<br />

and safety of <strong>Smithfield</strong> employees.<br />

As <strong>Smithfield</strong>’s management is<br />

permanently concerned with ensuring<br />

an optimum and non-polluting<br />

working environment, <strong>we</strong> would like<br />

At <strong>the</strong> end of his visit, Ambassador<br />

Gitenstein joined<br />

<strong>Smithfield</strong>’s team of volunteers<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir planting campaign of<br />

50 trees on <strong>the</strong> land in front of Vinga<br />

Feedmill, part of <strong>Smithfield</strong>’s social<br />

responsibility and environmental<br />

protection program. Within this<br />

campaign, since <strong>the</strong> beginning of this<br />

program, over 15,000 trees have been<br />

planted in various locations from Timis<br />

and Arad County.<br />

to see what <strong>Smithfield</strong> <strong>Ferme</strong> has<br />

achieved at Vinga. It is an impressive<br />

example of US expertise and technology,<br />

implemented by a local team<br />

Vinga Feedmill is unique in Romania,<br />

in terms of equipment and technical<br />

performances, among <strong>the</strong> most<br />

modern ones in Europe and across<br />

<strong>the</strong> world, <strong>the</strong> technology used for<br />

this project being also a first for Europe<br />

– in terms of how <strong>the</strong> construction<br />

was made.<br />

The construction of Vinga Feedmill<br />

began in December 2006, and<br />

was inaugurated 18 months later,<br />

being one of <strong>the</strong> biggest Greenfield<br />

investments in Romania. The construction<br />

at Vinga covers 20 ha of<br />

land, 350,000 hours of work being<br />

necessary to complete <strong>the</strong> project.<br />

Vinga Feedmill has a <strong>we</strong>ekly production<br />

capacity of 8,000 tons of pig<br />

feeds, based on own recipes.

at <strong>the</strong> end of last year, <strong>Smithfield</strong><br />

<strong>Ferme</strong> successfully implemented<br />

<strong>the</strong> Food Safety Management System<br />

and obtained <strong>the</strong> iSO 22000:2005 Certificate,<br />

following <strong>the</strong> audit and certification<br />

by TUV austria Romania.<br />

By implementing <strong>the</strong> requirements<br />

of iSO 22000 standard <strong>we</strong> can say that,<br />

in terms of food safety, <strong>we</strong> meet all <strong>the</strong><br />

requirements to provide safe products<br />

for <strong>the</strong> consumer’s health, up to <strong>the</strong> last<br />

stage of swine production.<br />

The implementation of iSO 22000:2005<br />

standard provides <strong>the</strong> company with<br />

an organizational framework in order<br />

to identify, assess and control any potential<br />

food safety hazard by specific<br />

operation and control procedures.<br />

With a view to continuously improving<br />

<strong>the</strong> production processes, once <strong>the</strong><br />

implementation and certification of <strong>the</strong><br />

Food Safety Management System was<br />

achieved according to iSO 22000, a detailed<br />

analysis of <strong>the</strong> production process<br />

was also conducted in every farm and<br />

feedmills by <strong>the</strong> Food Safety Team. Following<br />

this analysis, a number of checks<br />

and monitoring actions <strong>we</strong>re introduced<br />

throughout and at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> production<br />

process, and forms <strong>we</strong>re developed<br />

to register <strong>the</strong> results of <strong>the</strong>se checks.<br />

The implementation and certification<br />

of this Food Safety system, as <strong>we</strong>ll as <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r ones already implemented and<br />

certified, in terms of Quality, Environment,<br />

Occupational Health and Safety,<br />

does not mean that our effort to maintain<br />

and improve <strong>the</strong>m will stop here. A<br />

program of internal audits and checks of<br />

<strong>the</strong> working points will be developed in<br />

<strong>the</strong> following period to collect as much<br />

information as possible in order to raise<br />

awareness of <strong>the</strong> employees and create<br />

a professional, organized and performing<br />

working environment.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> benefits of <strong>the</strong> audits and<br />

checks is that <strong>the</strong>y support <strong>the</strong> employees,<br />

as information is collected about<br />

<strong>the</strong> actual functioning of <strong>the</strong> processes<br />

on site. This is why <strong>the</strong> involvement of<br />

all <strong>the</strong> employees is required and desirable,<br />

as it can only lead to improving <strong>the</strong><br />

performances of <strong>the</strong> company and, implicitly,<br />

of each and every one of us.<br />

SMITHFIELD PROD: Environmental audit – ISO 14001:2004 also in 2010<br />

<strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod obtained <strong>the</strong> ISO<br />

14001:2004 certificate in 2009 – follo<strong>we</strong>d<br />

in 2010 by a supervisory audit<br />

conducted with positive results. Our<br />

goal for 2011 is to conduct our activity<br />

so as to maintain <strong>the</strong> certification<br />

obtained in 2009 and be 100% compliant<br />

to better understand and see on-site<br />

what <strong>the</strong> challenges and satisfactions<br />

of working in a slaughterhouse are.


No. 1 – March 2011<br />

Product tasting<br />

This month, <strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod launched<br />

some new recipes: 11 assortments of<br />

sausages and 7 assortments of highly<br />

seasoned forcemeat balls.<br />

Prod investment, <strong>the</strong> pork achieves <strong>the</strong><br />

optimum parameters so as to be safely kept and<br />

subsequently consumed.“<br />

in technological upgrade<br />

<strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod has completed <strong>the</strong><br />

technological upgrade works in<br />

<strong>the</strong> rapid refrigeration area of pork<br />

carcasses resulted from <strong>the</strong> slaughtering<br />

process. The investment<br />

amounted to USD 3.5 million, <strong>the</strong><br />

new refrigeration area covering 755<br />

m2. For almost 4 months, 7 contracting<br />

companies have been involved<br />

in this project.<br />

Rapid refrigeration is a refrigeration<br />

method for foods, pork in<br />

this case, at a low temperature, safe<br />

in terms of preventing bacterial proliferation.<br />

With this investment, by transiting<br />

<strong>the</strong> carcasses in tunnels with temperatures<br />

bet<strong>we</strong>en -18 and –24 °C, for 90<br />

minutes, <strong>the</strong> pork achieves <strong>the</strong> optimum<br />

parameters so as to be safely<br />

kept and subsequently consumed.<br />

Rapid cooling of pork carcasses<br />

can also be useful to processors as an<br />

additional method to control <strong>the</strong> microbial<br />

proliferation and, implicitly,<br />

<strong>the</strong> increase of food safety as regards<br />

basic pork products.<br />

<strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod is <strong>the</strong> largest slaughterhouse<br />

in Romania, with a processing<br />

capacity of 600 heads per hour, being<br />

located on <strong>the</strong> former COMTIM<br />

Our sales department has a strong and<br />

complete each o<strong>the</strong>r so as to successfully<br />

cope with <strong>the</strong> unpredicted situations<br />

arising in <strong>the</strong> difficult process of selling.<br />

My activity as Industrial Sales Coordinator<br />

implies <strong>the</strong> following: establishing<br />

<strong>the</strong> marketing strategies, developing and<br />

maintaining <strong>the</strong> relationships with <strong>the</strong><br />

customers; attracting new customers;<br />

dates, merchandise in excess of ordered<br />

quantities [this results from our desire<br />

to sell more]; merchandise which does<br />

not arrive in time to <strong>the</strong> customer for<br />

transportation reasons, sometimes even<br />

losses in <strong>the</strong> order made by <strong>the</strong> customers;<br />

<strong>we</strong>ighting differences; all <strong>the</strong>se must<br />

be solved and require time and tens of<br />

phone calls a day.<br />

How is Liviu Florea when he is not<br />

working?<br />

I am a normal person, spending almost<br />

all my time with my family and particularly<br />

How is a day of your life, as a veterinarian<br />

at BACOVA?<br />

I have worked for <strong>the</strong> company for<br />

more than two years and as a farm veterinarian<br />

since December 2nd, 2008. Every<br />

day begins with setting <strong>the</strong> activities<br />

for <strong>the</strong> respective day on <strong>the</strong> two farm<br />

sectors (nursery and gestation). Later,<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> day, depending on <strong>the</strong><br />

situations and problems, I try to find a<br />

solution in <strong>the</strong> shortest time possible<br />

and with <strong>the</strong> <strong>best</strong> results.<br />

You are <strong>the</strong> veterinarian of one of <strong>the</strong><br />

biggest <strong>Smithfield</strong>-owned farms. What<br />

does that mean to you?<br />

The possibility to work in one of <strong>the</strong><br />

biggest <strong>Smithfield</strong>-owned farms brings<br />

me first of all <strong>the</strong> satisfaction of practicing<br />

in <strong>the</strong> field chosen, while also enabling<br />

a professional development.<br />

How easy/difficult is it to be a veterinarian?<br />

Practicing this profession is not always<br />

tasks and provide <strong>the</strong>m with technical<br />

support in achieving <strong>the</strong>se tasks.<br />

What kind of relationship do you have<br />

My relationship with all <strong>the</strong> employees<br />

is a professional one, but for any personal<br />

problem <strong>the</strong>y face and which is reflected<br />

In my professional activity, performance<br />

farms. It is a permanent concern for<br />

keeping <strong>the</strong> animals’ health, by continuing<br />

to strictly comply with <strong>the</strong><br />

bio-security plan, for healthy animals,<br />

with performing genetics. The<br />

internal bio-security plan is in line<br />

with all <strong>the</strong> current Romanian and<br />

European Union regulations in <strong>the</strong><br />

field of animal health, and is <strong>the</strong> key<br />

to maintaining <strong>the</strong> animals’ health.<br />

As for <strong>the</strong> medium-term objectives<br />

of <strong>the</strong> production department – <strong>we</strong><br />

want to improve our production index,<br />

as <strong>we</strong>ll as <strong>the</strong> EFFICIENCY and<br />

profitability indexes. In a word: <strong>we</strong><br />

The civic and ecological educational program Your World? Clean! started within<br />

<strong>Smithfield</strong> companies in <strong>the</strong> school year 2009-2010. The children of agroalim<br />

and <strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod employees could find out from <strong>the</strong> information materials<br />

about <strong>the</strong> environment and <strong>the</strong> impact that <strong>the</strong> human activity has on it, about<br />

selective waste collection and about what each and every one of us can do<br />

individually and toge<strong>the</strong>r to take care of <strong>the</strong> environment<br />

at Agroalim, Your World? Clean!<br />

is also <strong>the</strong> first social responsibility<br />

program for <strong>the</strong> children of<br />

<strong>the</strong> employees, being very <strong>we</strong>ll received<br />

by all those involved, whe<strong>the</strong>r kids or<br />

adults. The program is simple, interesting,<br />

playful and also consistent with<br />

<strong>Smithfield</strong>’s commitment to environmental<br />

protection, being adjusted so as<br />

to be implemented in every Agroalim<br />

branch. All <strong>the</strong> employees’ children aged<br />

bet<strong>we</strong>en 7 and 13 years received a folder<br />

and an educational brochure on environmental<br />

protection to read toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with <strong>the</strong>ir parents. Then <strong>the</strong>y <strong>we</strong>re given<br />

a challenge: an invitation to <strong>the</strong> competition:<br />

<strong>the</strong> children could write a composition<br />

about <strong>the</strong> environment/environmental<br />

protection and/or make decorative<br />

items out of recycled materials as inventive<br />

as possible and… <strong>the</strong>y won!<br />

teaching activity aimed at raising<br />

awareness on <strong>the</strong> importance of keeping<br />

<strong>the</strong> environment clean.<br />

at <strong>the</strong> initiative of <strong>Smithfield</strong> <strong>Ferme</strong> and <strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod<br />

Fifty students monitored <strong>the</strong> quality<br />

of <strong>the</strong> waters from Timis and Arad County<br />

our colleagues from <strong>Smithfield</strong><br />

<strong>Ferme</strong> and <strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with 50 children from<br />

<strong>the</strong> General School of Barsa, Arad<br />

County, and <strong>the</strong> General School of<br />

Utvin, Timis County, tested <strong>the</strong> waters<br />

of Canalul Morilor river and <strong>the</strong><br />

waters resulting from <strong>the</strong> treatment<br />

process of <strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod’s treatment<br />

station, within <strong>the</strong> international<br />

program “World Water Monitoring<br />

Day<strong>”</strong>.<br />

This teaching-educational activity<br />

was conducted last November, be-<br />

to donate in 2010 more than<br />

4.500 kg of pork and pork products<br />

to more than 17 different<br />

organizations from Timisoara<br />

and <strong>the</strong> surrounding, which<br />

take care of persons in social<br />

risk situations, supporting <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to increase <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> life<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir beneficiaries.<br />

“Helping Hungry Homes Program“<br />

contributed also in 2010<br />

to increasing <strong>the</strong> quality of life<br />

of adults with intellectual disabilities,<br />

beneficiaries of “Pentru<br />

Voi<strong>”</strong> Foundation. This program<br />

contributed to providing a daily<br />

warm meal for 138 adults with<br />

intellectual disabilities, beneficiaries<br />

of <strong>the</strong> services provided<br />

by “Pentru Voi<strong>”</strong> Foundation. More<br />

than in <strong>the</strong> previous years, Smith-<br />

ing already at its third edition, as an<br />

experiment with <strong>the</strong> role of raising<br />

<strong>the</strong> awareness of <strong>the</strong> young generation<br />

regarding <strong>the</strong> protection of water<br />

resources and <strong>the</strong> importance of<br />

environmental protection.<br />

In Arad County, 30 pupils from<br />

<strong>the</strong> General School of Barsa, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with representatives of<br />

<strong>Smithfield</strong> <strong>Ferme</strong>’s Environmental<br />

department, tested <strong>the</strong> water of<br />

Canalul Morilor river. The event<br />

was also attended by <strong>the</strong> mayor of<br />

Barsa, Mr. Avram Ciev, representa-<br />

field Prod understood this need<br />

and responded promptly to <strong>the</strong><br />

requests by providing fresh pork<br />

products several times a <strong>we</strong>ek.<br />

These <strong>we</strong>re cooked in <strong>the</strong> Foundation’s<br />

canteen and served in<br />

<strong>the</strong> two day centers for adults<br />

with intellectual disabilities, located<br />

in Freidorf neighborhood:<br />

“Împreună<strong>”</strong> Day Center and<br />

“Ladislau Tacsi<strong>”</strong> Day Center.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> period June – September<br />

2010, Helping Hungry<br />

Homes, a program inspired by<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>best</strong> practice model implemented<br />

in <strong>Smithfield</strong> Prod<br />

ever since 2009, was promoted<br />

through working meetings at<br />

<strong>the</strong> local level, as part of a promotion<br />

tour, in all Agroalim<br />

branches. Thus, <strong>we</strong> managed to<br />

start this corporate responsibility<br />

program in all <strong>the</strong> branches,<br />

based on a social component, a<br />

program with an extraordinary<br />

social impact, representative<br />

for <strong>the</strong> application of <strong>the</strong> values<br />

underpinning <strong>Smithfield</strong>’s<br />

working philosophy, throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> world.<br />

As a result hereof, at <strong>the</strong> end<br />

of 2010 <strong>the</strong> program has been<br />

100% implemented in 4 Agroalim<br />

branches: Buftea, Cluj, Baia<br />

Mare and Bacau, while it is in<br />

a contracting stage in all <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r branches. In 2010, Agroalim<br />

donated over 4,473 kg of<br />

food products to persons in social<br />

risk situations. In this period,<br />

importance of preserving <strong>the</strong> natural<br />

resources and, with <strong>the</strong> help<br />

of <strong>the</strong> testing kits made available,<br />

a series of parameters on quality<br />

water <strong>we</strong>re monitored.<br />

<strong>we</strong> provided food products for<br />

more than 8,000 beneficiaries<br />

of social services, by means of<br />

several local partners, including,<br />

among o<strong>the</strong>rs: Fundatia Romana<br />

pentru Copii, Comunitate si<br />

Familie, Cluj; Caritas Association<br />

and Sfantul Stelian Association<br />

from B ucharest; Speranta Foundation<br />

from Baia Mare or Lumina<br />

Association from Bacau.<br />

This program created <strong>the</strong> necessary<br />

platform for Agroalim<br />

to become a more responsible<br />

member in <strong>the</strong> local community<br />

in all <strong>the</strong> branches where<br />

it operates.<br />

He quickly learned a profession that o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

need 20 years to master. He is tenacious,<br />

does not give up in difficult situations, is<br />

resilient to stress. Results – he managed<br />

to sell by himself a volume equivalent to<br />
