any other reafon for recommending the reins of<br />
animals, efpecially thofe of the he-goat, as provoca-<br />
tives to copulation, or that ZEtius should prefcribe the<br />
parts above the reins as a charm and incentive to lull:,<br />
but becaufe they have fome analogy and fimilitude<br />
with human reins, for which reafon they are fuppofed<br />
-to affift them, and excite them to perform the office of<br />
generation.* For this reafon warm unguents, among<br />
other medicines, are ufually prefcribed to such perfons,<br />
who are lefs ready in venereal affairs, and thofe to be<br />
applied not only to the privities, but to the region of<br />
-the reins as alfo ftrong diureticks, as cantharides,<br />
and the pofture of lying upon the back, that by thefe<br />
methods the loins may be warmed, and the feed<br />
quickened in its motion to the tefticles, and fo cold<br />
conftitutions become fired and raifed to venery. From<br />
whence Rhafes, in his twelfth book, fays—As often as<br />
the loins are chafed with warm medicinie, the penis<br />
will fwell, and be extended in ereaion, And Mafib<br />
the Arabian, in the fame author, fays—That the heat<br />
of the back affifts luxury (that it excites luft), and as<br />
