IT WAS AROUND 8 :50 A .M ., SEPTEMBER 1'.TH, AND I WAS JOKING 

around with my management team when a staffer burst into 

my office and shouted that a plane had just hit the World 

Trade Center . 

Like most of New York City, we sat paralyzed with fear watch- 

ing our glorious Towers burn, praying for the escape of inno- 

t cent victims . We knew we'd soon have to evacuate our own 

building . What we didn't know is that as we sat planning our 

next move, TsEN PEOas e's assistant consumer marketing director, 

Kate McPadden, was trying to call her husband, Bob . 

Most husband and wife phone cails that morning were fran- 

tic communications to ensure loved ones were safe and away 

from the attack . But unlike the rest of us, Bob was racing down 

to the World Trade Center.That's because Bob McPadden, 30, 

was a firefighter at Engine 23 in midtown Manhattan . 

"So many people who perished that day were absolutely 

terrified, but Bob was totally pumped to be part of the res- 

cue-he couldn't wait to get to the scene and help," says 

Kate . "It was his calling to save lives and this was the rescue 

of a Ilfetime." 

The following day, Bob and Bve other heroes from Engine 23 

(Lieutenant Charles Garbarini, John Marshall, James Pappa- 

george, Hector Tirado Jr. and Mark Whitford) were reported 

missing . We prayed for their safe return, but as the week 

passed, hope gave way to unimaginable grief . 

At Bob's funeral service, it was sold that the one belief unit-

John Bendick of Engine 23 : "Why else would we take a job that 

requires us to give up our lives?" 

That, to me, is the simple definition of a hero : one whose 

love of humanity outweighs concern for oneself . So often, 

you've told us that you crave more role models, more heroes . 

Besides an occasional athlete or celebrity, many of you have 

said that you don't have enough people to look up to . 

Bob McPadden and so many others have changed all of 

that, forever. "Our readers need to know that they don't have 

to be a Britney or Venus to be heroes," says Kate 

. Perhaps it has taken a national tragedy for us to realize that 

we are surrounded by heroes, and that each of us can act 

heroically in ways big and small . 

So many of you have responded with courage, optimism 

and heart to the events of that fateful morning . Yours is a gen- 

eration of activists who want to change the world-to teach 

the worid to love humanity. Now more than ever is your 

chance to do just that .

During Engine 23's rescue mission at the NorldTrade Center, 

its fire truck was destroyed . TEEN PeOPLE, in conjunction with 

AOL TGne Warner, is donating a fere truck in memory of Bob 

McPadden and his fve comrades who heroically gave their lives

she is missing and can't find . She needs to see for 

herself that her daytime self is alive and beating and 

multicolored . I can help her remember what her life 

was like before the dealers and the midnight fixes . 

I can help her stand tall and strong. I can help her 

see that life is not about three-hour solutions that 

make her wake up feeling dead I can be someone 

safe to her. I can care about her so mucltthat I point 

her to the exit and hold her hand as she gets there . 

My friend has a problem, and I am helping her. 

I am listening and I am talking, and I am working 

with her, and I am learning how to be the best to her . 

I have unshakable confidence in her, and I know she _
