HÂRNWORLD INTRODUCTION 1
ABOUT
This document acts as a brief introduction to the world of Hârn for new players.
More detailed information can be found in HârnWorld, 2 nd edition or HârnPlayer
both available from Columbia Games, Inc.
LOCATION AND GEOGRAPHY
Hârn is an island lying 160 km off the north-west coast of the continent Lythia.
Hârn measures roughly 250 Hârnic leagues (1000 km) north/south and 375 leagues
(1500 km) east/west.
Hârn is a rough, hazy, forested isle with maritime-temperate climate (cool
summers, mild winters, and damp). Fog, drizzle and overcast skies are common.
The moist climate promotes luxurious vegetation, mostly summer-green deciduous
forest and woodland.
Hârn’s centre is dominated by fresh water lake Benath and island’s highest
peak is Mount Wynan at 9766’ in Felsha mountain range. Hârn has three other
mountain ranges and much of Hârn is hilly.
CULTURES AND NATIONS
There are nine civilized states on Hârn, seven human, one elven (Sindarin) and
one dwarven (Khuzdul) cultures. There are also numerous barbarian nations or
tribes throughout Hârn. Also considerable population of orcs (Gargun) live in cavecomplexes
or as wandering nomadic bands in Hârn.
Principal language in Hârn is Hârnic. Other languages spoken in Hârn are
Jarinese (by jarins), Orbaleese (in Orbaal) and demi-human tongues of Khuzan and
Sindar.
Azadmere
Kingdom of the Hârnic Khuzdul (dwarves) centred on the city of Azadmere, but
including most of the mountains surrounding Lake Arain in the eastern Hârn. Ruled
by King Hazmadul III. Kingdom of Azadmere also includes the impressive Zerhun
fortress.
Chybisa
Smallest state in Hârn located on the south bank of Ulmerien River in the east.
Chybisa is ruled by King Verlid IV from Burzyn. Unlike other feudal kingdoms in
Hârn, Chybisa is not divided into shires and has no earldoms.
Evael
Kingdom of the Sindarin (elves) is the last remnant of elven kingdom that once
ruled all of Hârn. Evael’s borders are the Farin River on the west, the Wend on the
north and the Kald on the East. There are only two large settlements: Ulfshaven
and Elshavel, the royal seat of King Aranath. Entrance to the Evael is very
restricted; only few non-elves are permitted within.
Kanday
Feudal kingdom located in the south-western Hârn ruled by King Andasin IV
from his seat at Dyrisa. Bloody skirmishes along Rethemi border are common and
represent the aftermath of Ezar's War when Kanday defeated Rethem. Recently,
Kanday suffered a defeat to the Thardic Republic in Kuseme War.
Kaldor
Located in the eastern interior of Hârn, Kaldor is a feudal realm ruled by aging
King Miginath of clan Elendsa. Royal castle is located in the city of Tashal with
population of roughly 11 000. Other major fiefs and their tenants-in-chief include
Gardiren (Earls Curo), Kiban (Earl Dariune), Minarsas (Earl Caldeth) and Qualdris
(Earl Meleken).
Kaldor has a claim on Chybisa.
Melderyn
Island kingdom off the south-east coast of Hârn which also includes extensive
lands on the Hârnic mainland. Melderyn, sometimes called as ”the Wizards’ Isle”, is
ruled by King Chunel from Cherafir.
Melderyn has a claim on Chybisa.
Kethira
Kethira is Hârn’s planet. The planet is
slightly smaller than Earth and has one
moon called Yael. Kethira orbits the sun
called Nolomar.
Scripts
Hârnic script is called Lakise. Other
scripts include Runic (in Orbaal and
Azadmere) and Selenian (Sindarin).
HÂRNWORLD INTRODUCTION 2
Orbaal
Pre-feudal state in the north-eastern Hârn ruled by King Alegar II from
Geldeheim. Orbaal was proclaimed after Ivinian conquest of the indigenous Jarin,
who live in enslaved and rebellious. Orbaal is ruled by clans who owe it to the
king.
Rethem
Feudal kingdom located in the western Hârn ruled by King Chafin III from his
seat in Shostim. Rethem has a violent history and is Hârn’s most unstable,
trecherous ,and dangerous state. Many believe that Chafin III is able to unite
Rethem and redress the “wrongs” suffered at the hands of hated Kanday.
Thardic Republic
A plutocratic state governed by republican senate from city of Coranan which
is Hârn’s largest town with population of 12 500. Tharda, as it’s unofficially called,
is located in the western Hârn. The republic is divided into six administrative
provinces.
Barbarian nations
Hârnic barbarian nations include Adaenum, Anoa, Bujoc, Chelni, Chymak,
Equani, Gozyda, Hordiri, Kabloqui, Kamaki, Kath, Kubora, Pagaelin, Solori, Taelda,
Tulwyn, Urdu and Ymodi. Total population of these barbarian nations exceeds
100 000, but individual tribes rarely exceed 200 in size.
LIFE ON HÂRN
Feudalism
Prevailing form of government in civilized Hârn is feudalism. All lands are
owned by the king, who grants fiefs to his vassals to provide for local government
and defence. Nobility in Hârn commonly consists of earls, barons, manorial lords
and knights.
The distinction between noble and commoner is the most significant in Hârnic
society. The exclusive rights and privileges of the nobility include the right to bear
heraldic arms and chivalric weapons, ride warhorses, organize military forces, hold
fortifications and dispense justice at feudal courts.
Guilds
A guild is a brotherhood of craftsmen who have banded together to control
economic activity in specific or related trades. In Hârn all significant commercial
and professional activities are in controlled by guilds. The Mangai is the association
of all guilds operating under the Charter of the Mangai.
Guilds grant franchises to qualified masters that allow them to operate within
specific area. Although the custom varies there are usually three ranks within each
guild: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master.
Chivalric arms
Weapons and armour commonly
considered as chivalric include estoc,
broad-, bastard- and battleswords; mace,
warhammer, battleaxe, ball and chain, lance,
poleaxe, crossbow, and kite and knight
shields.
Hârnic coins
The coinage system on Hârn is based on
a single coin, silver penny. Most civilized
states produce their own silver pennies.
Silver penny can literally be divided into
four quarters, farthings.
Coins from Azadmere have universal
acceptance, but coins minted elsewhere are
usually discounted 10-20% outside their
own territory.
Hârnic measurements
1 foot = 12 thumbs
1 hand = 4 thumbs
1 span = 8 thumbs
1 pace = 3 feet
1 yard = 1 pace + 1 span
HÂRNWORLD INTRODUCTION 3
RELIGION
The inhabitants of Hârn are pantheistic; their pantheon consists of ten major
deities, but most worship only one of these. Apart from the ten major churches,
there are hundreds of lesser divine and semi-divine entities who are worshipped by
various folk.
Agrik
Agrik is the evil god of war, the breeder of violence for its own sake, the deity of
those who enjoy rapine, pillage, cruelty and destruction. His element is fire. The
church is a hotbed of internecine strife.
The worship of Agrik is concentrated in the Thardic Republic and the Kingdom
of Rethem. It is a proscribed faith in Chybisa, Kaldor, Melderyn and Kanday.
Agrik is worshipped by more than half a dozen different clerical sects, each of
which sponsors its own fighting order.
Halea
Halea is the amoral Goddess of wealth and pleasure. She is the deity of those
who seek hedonistic joy. She is a schemer who demands unswerving devotion of
her adherents and loves flattery. Halea’s priesthood is composed entirely of women
with pleasant appearance; males are used as temple guards and consorts .
Halea has modest support among merchants and guildsmen, but is most
dominant in Thardic Republic. There are no fighting orders dedicated to Halea and
the Order of the Silken Voice is the only clerical order.
Ilvir
Ilvir is the amoral creator of the Ivashu. His ethical code is centered on self
preservation. His adherents are individualistic, creative, and fond of mysticism.
Downs of distinct sects worship Ilvir, although his adherents are not numerous.
Ilviranism is known for its fractious and esoteric ritualism.
The worship of Ilvir is scattered widely throughout Hârn, but is uncommon
except among the Jarin of Orbaal. There exist over half a dozen clerical orders
devoted to Ilvir, none of which sponsors a fighting order.
Larani
Larani is the benevolent goddess of chivalry and battle, the reluctant warrior.
She is the deity of those who make war in a just and honourable cause.
Larani is the lady of chivalrous knights worshipped in all of Hârn. Larani’s
church is comprised of two principal clerical sects, both with their own fighting
order and region of operation.
Morgath
Morgath is the master of chaos, evil, and the undead. He is a god of retribution,
caring nothing for justice, and despising all things fair and noble. His clerical
followers belong to the Order of the Lord of Chaos, a dour and ruthless
organization, infamous for its practice of human sacrifice.
Worship of Morgath is largely confined to Tharda, elsewhere his clergy are
covert. In Kaldor, Chybisa and Melderyn the worship of Morgath is punishable by
death.
There is only one clerical sect devoted to this deity, the Order of the Lord of
Chaos. It has major temples in Golotha and Coranan.
Agrik
Breeder of Plague, Squallor, and Decay, The
Immortal Warlord of Balgashang, The Tyrant
Horsemen , The Reasonless Reaper, The Master
HÂRNWORLD INTRODUCTION 4
Naveh
Naveh is perhaps, the most merciless of the gods, motivated by cold implacable
intelligence. A god of darkness, he is often worshipped by thieves and assassins. He
is considered a doer of the impossible and a master of lies and deception. Best
known as the bringer of nightmares, Naveh is associated with inexplicable and
untimely death. His clerics are amazingly well disciplined, and have been known to
commit suicide to prove a point.
Any temple of Naveh is always well hidden from public view, even where
lawful. Therefore, very little is known of the church by outsiders.
Peoni
Peoni is the gentle goddess of healing and agriculture. She is a forgiving deity,
worshipped by many farmers, and those who use their skills to aid the meek and
powerless. Temples have the habit of disbursing their funds to the poor and are,
consequently, always on the edge of poverty.
Peoni is the most popular deity among the peasantry. There are two, celibate
clerical orders, the Balm of Joy (female) and the Irreproachable Order (male).
Sarajin
Sarajin is the amoral god of battlelust, requiring fearlessness and bravado (the
code of the Ljarl) of his adherents. He loves the sport of war, and sometimes
participates in human battles. He is the principal god of vikings and of the lvinians.
Sarajin’s followers are informal in their religious organization.
Sarajin is mainly worshipped in Orbaal. Clerical functions are performed by
traditional ”priestly” clans who recognize no central authority.
SaveK’nor
Save-K’nor is the god of knowledge, and the seeker of enlightenment. His
adherents have no particular moral bent besides loyalty to the church, although
their belief in an ordered society generally precludes evil behaviour.
Clerics and laymen of the religion are found in high offices throughout Hârn,
particularly in Melderyn. Three main clerical sects exist each stressing a different
personal aspect: Hyn-Aelori, Rydequelyn, and Shea-al-Aecor.
Siem
Siem is benign god of mystery, magic and dreams. Siem is primarily
worshipped by elves and dwarves of Hârn and is sometimes considered the eldest
of the gods.
Names of the various orders worshipping Siem are not known. Followers of
Siem build no temples, preferring to worship under the stars without formal church.
Naveh
”Lord of the Pitch Shadows, Master of
Deceit and Evil Dreams, Lord of the Last
Illusion, The Merchant of Death,The Unseen
Lifter of Lives, Trancer the Cat, Wealth’s Worry”
Peoni
”Lady of Truth and White Virtue, The
Restorer and Bringer of Life Renewed, Maker of
Balms, Guardian of the Meek, Lady of
Industrious Labours and the Ripe Harvest,
Confidant of Lovers, Chaste Lady of Honest
Love.”
Sarajin
”King of the Icy Wind, Lord of the Perilous
Quest and Wielder of the Bloody Axe, Master of
Frosty Climes, the Grey Slayer”
SaveK’nor
”Lord of Puzzles, Conundrums and Mazes,
Sage of the Gods, Lord of Jesters, Mixer of
Potions, Knower of Many Things, Keeper of the
Var-Hyvrak, the Lost Guide”
Siem
”Master of the Lords of Dream, Bringer of
Meritorious Dreams and Blessed Forgetfulness,
Lord of the Starlit and Thriced-Blessed Realm,
King of the Uttermost West, Master of the
Sundered Ones in Exile, Spirit of the Mist, The
HÂRNWORLD INTRODUCTION 5
MAGIC
There is clear difference between magic and religion. Miracles come from gods,
magic, on the other hand is caused by the manipulation of non-sentient forces by
skilled practitioner.
An important distinction between religion and magic is legality. In many
regions, it is illegal to conjure or consort with demons, or “dispose of souls”. These
are religious acts considered witchcraft. Most sorcerers deem it wise to avoid all
charges of witchcraft by staying well clear of any religious acts.
Magic itself is not illegal in most regions. However, the definition of witchcraft
also includes the casting of inimical spells. Party who believes to have been harmed
by malicious magic may charge his alleged tormentor. This, of course, may be hard
to prove either way.
ShekPvar
In Hârn magic is practised in the order of the Shek-Pvar. Shek-Pvar is a
collective name for six convocations (sub-orders) within the Guild of Arcane Lore.
Each convocation is associated with a particular element.
Lyahvi (Air)
Light, Illusion, Etherealness
Peleahn (Fire)
Heat, Action, Dryness
Jmorvi (Metal)
Metallic, Mineral, Artifice
Fyvria (Earth)
Birth, Growth, Death, Decay
Odivshe (Water)
Cold, Darkness, Moisture
Savorya (Spirit)
Knowledge, Mind, Meaning
Wheel of ShekPvar
Convocations are often depicted in a circular pattern called the Wheel of Shek-
Pvar. Each magical spell belongs to one convocation. There are also neutral spells,
the hub of the wheel.
Any mage can cast neutral spells, but to cast a convocational spell, a mage
must be attuned to the convocation. During apprenticeship, a mage learns how to
attune to one of the six convocations. Later, the mage can, with difficulty, also
attune to other convocations.
Gray Mages
Most powerful of mages, those who can attune to all six convocations, are able
to transcend convocational magic and treat all spell as if they were neutral. These
individuals are called Gray mages. They are very powerful and very rare.
Code of ShekPvar
All members of Shek-Pvar must obey the Code of Shek-Pvar:
1. “Bring not the scorn of the Kvikir upon thy brothers, nor make with thy art a
place for thyself above them.”
2. “Spread not thy lore, even among thy brothers, without the sanction of thy
peers.”
3. “Keep sacred and free from harm, thy house of lore.”
4. “Succor not a renegade of the art, but strike him down with thy power, else
summon thy brothers to thy aide.”
5. “Make tithe to thy house of lore a portion of thyne arcane treasure to thy
brother's benefit.”
Glossary
AILETTE A small square shield worn on
the shoulders of knights.
ALANAL Bitter, soluble crystals derived
from the common Alanal plant, which is
found in heathland. If mixed with water or
beer and swallowed, it causes euphoria and
vivid illusions for several hours. Alanal is
illegal in Melderyn and Chybisa.
ALUM White salt-like crystals found in
rock. It has a very sour taste. Alum is used
as a preservative due to its astringent
quality. Imported.
AMBERGRIS Sweet, musty smelling,
pitchlike lump of black mass, believed to be
a cure-all. It is usually found floating on the
ocean or cast ashore.
ARVA Lavender liquid derived from the
uncom-mon Arva plant, which is found in
wood-land and heath. If swallowed, it
increases the metabolic rate and imbues
enormous strength for a short time.
ASH Tall deciduous tree with a wide,
spreading crown supported by a sturdy
trunk. Tiny branchlets at the end of each
branch divide further into a mass of fine
twigs. The smooth- and straight-grained
wood is tough but elastic, making it
particularly good for weapon hafts. The
broadleaf Western Ash can be found in
Hârnic mixed forests and grows to 130 feet.
BDELLIUM Fragrant gum resin of
certain plants. Imported.
BERILIK Greenish-yellow, oily paste that
is de-rived from the common Berilik plant,
which is found in deep shade in forests. If
spread lightly over open wounds and sores,
Berilik acts as an effective disin-fectant and
anaesthetic.
BIRCH Tall, close-grained deciduous
tree that is easily identified by its long
delicate twigs and shiny, flaky bark that is
often broken up into plates. Katha Birch is
one of the few species of broadleaves that is
hardy enough to grow in nee-dleleaf forests,
although it can be found in mixed forests as
well. It grows to 60 feet.
BRASS Malleable and durable yellow
alloy con-sisting essentially of copper and
zinc.
BRONZE Durable brown alloy consisting
essen-tially of copper and tin.
better quality than most Hârnic linen.
FANOSEL Clear, soluble crystals
derived from the very common Fanosel
plant, which is found in large patches in
mixed and needle leaf forest. If mixed with
water or other drink and swallowed, it
quickly grants euphoria and powerful
delusions of grandeur for hours, as well as
reducing inhibitions. Fanosel is highly
addictive and therefore illegal in Kaldor,
Melderyn, Chybisa and Kanday.
FIR Tall, straight evergreen tree with
soft, fragrant wood and downward-pointing
branches. Its cones sit upright, perched high
up on the branches like fat candles. The pale
bands beneath each dark, glossy, strapshaped
leaf show as a flash of silver when
the wind blows through the tree s branches.
Northern Fir can be found in Hârnic needle
leaf forests and grows to 130 feet.
FLETHARANE Smoked, twisted leaves
derived from the uncommon Fletharane
plant, which is found in marshland. The
leaves are burned and the smoke inhaled,
causing light-headedness and leading to an
hour-long trance, during which time
hallucinations are experienced. Fletharane is
used by the Bujoc tribal nation, among
others.
FRANKINCENSE Fragrant, hard, yellow
amber-like resin from spruce bark, used for
burning as incense. Imported.
FREESTONE Stone such as limestone
and sand-stone, which can be cut well in all
di-rections without splitting.
GAETHIPA Gummy whitish substance
derived from the rare Gaethipa plant, which
is found in partial or total shade in
marshland. If introduced to the blood
stream, it causes paralysis, leading to
convulsions and a 90% chance of death in
seconds. Gaethipa is the most effective and
quick-acting poison known in Hârn and is
favoured by assassins. For obvious reasons,
it is illegal throughout Hârn and the
cultivation of Gaethipa is punishable by
deah in most jurisdictions.
GINGER Pungent root, light brown in
colour and having a sharp, strong flavour.
LASHU POWDER Powdered leafstalks
of a certain herb that grows only in
Diramoa. The powder is quite sour and is
excellent for making preserves. It is believed
to be a medicinal cure-all by western
Lythians.
LAVARYCTIA Acrid yellow liquid
derived from the uncommon Lavaryctia
plant, which is found in damp soil. If mixed
with water or other drink and swallowed, it
induces deep sleep for several hours.
LEATHER The most common leather
comes from cattle, but most common
domestic animal hides are tanned. Leather
clothing is relatively rare. Leather clothing is
usually practical, not fashionable.
LENTILS A leguminous plant of the
genus Ervum (Ervum Lens), of small size.
Also, its seed, which is used for food on the
continent.
LEORTEVALD Fine yellow crystals
derived from the very common Leortevald
plant (also known as the Corpse plant
because of its odour), which is found in deep
shade in forest. If mixed with water or other
drink and swallowed, it causes mild
euphoria and delusions of heightened
senses. Leortevald is addictive and
withdrawal is fatal unless an antidote is
used.
LINEN Linen is a fabric made from flax
yarns. It is a cheap and lightweight cloth
that, on Hârn, is not often of any great
quality. Flax is a flowered plant cultivated
for its textile fibre. The finer fibres are used
to make linen for clothing. The coarser
