Horses are happy and excited when they enter water.
They immediately begin stomping and splashing. Not
everyone, however, is fortunate enough to live near
an ocean, a lake or a river.
Enjoyment is not the only factor to consider: therapy,
rehabilitation, muscle toning and conditioning are
also very important factors in this connection. The
successful reports on treatment and healing of
severe injuries among race and sport horses using
hydrotherapy sound like miracle stories.

Hydro or water therapy has successfully been used in
equine medicine since the 90’s. It has been used for
healing sicknesses as well as for preventing injuries.
The Kraft Water Walker is not a swimming pool, but a
tread pool; that is, the horses don’t swim. They tread
in water and have permanent contact with the
ground. This provides balanced stress relief to the
supporting skeletal structure. When horses swim,
they raise their heads, cause pressure to their backs
and hinder improved muscle toning (loosening).
Water is the optimum medium for healing various
illnesses as well as regaining strength.
What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is the methodological use of water to
treat acute and chronic symptoms, to stabilize bodily
functions, to be a preventative measure and for rehabilitation
and regeneration. The buoyancy of the
water also lessens the weight-bearing load on the
limbs.
Treading water (known as Kneipp in human medicine)
has also been an effective method for treating
illnesses and injuries. It also increases the healing
process.
The knowledge of the healing properties of water has
been applied for hundreds of years in veterinary
medicine.

Hydro training:
Training in water has a positive effect on horse’s
muscular development and circulation. To tread in
water for 20 to 30 minutes requires great strength
and promotes fitness, endurance and condition.
Health and performance must be balanced in a
responsible way. Too much emphasis is often placed
on strength and condition. Consequently sinews,
ligaments, bones and cartilage are often neglected.
Hydrotherapy creates a healthy balance and is the
ideal addition to basic training.
Hydro training is an additional option that
supplements conventional sport horse training.

Question: You are familiar with
the first water walkers. How do
you describe your experience?
Answer: The training results are amazing. Even more
fascinating is the joy of the horses when entering the
pool and especially the even temper they show
before and after training. Individual training and
therapy programs can be implemented for a number
of horses at the same time. This greatly reduces the
work load of a horse farm.

Answer: The great freedom of movement with which

blueprint to the start of production.

combined to produce the best product for therapy,
training and the general wellness of horses.

from Baden-Württemberg,
Germany and holds a Master’s
degree in Metal Construction.
He founded the Uwe Kraft
Company when he was 25
years old and this company is
now a leading manufacturer of
horse walkers in the world. He is also owner of a
breeding and boarding farm.

Question: Your farm received
the first Kraft Water Walker in
Germany. Why did you decide on
a water walker?
Answer: We had been researching this option for a
long time. We cannot offer natural bodies of water
such as a lake or river to our horse owners and
that is why we were searching for an adequate
alternative. Horses should not only have fun but
also have physical and therapeutic benefits.
That was the first thing that impressed me when I
visited the Hackenesch’s water walker. Every horse
can freely choose its own rhythm and gait. That
loosens the muscular system and encourages stress
free movement. The visibility through the walker’s
fences also adds to this freedom. I also feel that the
oval shape ideally balances the weight-bearing load
on the joints.
